Philip Nelson

I thinks Kill is driving some locomotive that will take a whole bunch of home grown kids where they want to go. There is no stopping the train once it gains speed.

Where is Big Al when you need him?

Awesome! Welcome home, Philip!!

Just like that we are pretty good at QB. Gray for Junior and Senior year. Shortell will then be a Sophomore or Jr. and Nelson will be a red-shirt freshman. Alipate and Parrish are x-factors at this point. I don't see gray getting beat out, but I guess that could happen as well.

That is the first mention I have seen on this board about Parrish. Isn't anyone expecting him to ever play QB at Minnesota?

I think he's got a good shot. I think the reason you don't hear much about him is that the coaches really don't know much about him. Kill and Limegrover have been talking up Gray because they remember recruiting him and have plenty of tape on him. And since they recruited and signed Shortell, they have thoroughly looked at him and know how he'll fit in with their system. I think once they get to see Parrish in spring practice, they'll have a better idea of what he can do and how he'll fit in. If he impresses, we'll hear about it and his stock will rise on GopherHole.

Great news on Nelson. Absolutely great news. Kill is working very hard and is obviously making a strong impression with in-state kids.

Wasn't Shortell a Brew recruit? I understand he signed under Kill, but thought he committed under Brewster. And he re-confirmed his committment to Kill. There was also a Pitt State connection with Shortell's father and Coach Kill.

You are correct that Brewster initially recruited Shortell. But Kill and company thoroughly reviewed him to make sure they still wanted him. It's a guess, but I'd say about half of Brewster's commitments went elsewhere because they no longer fit the new Gopher system. I believe Kill also had an in home visit with Shortell. Bottom line is that Kill knows Shortell better than Parrish and it may take spring practice for this to change.

Am I the only one that thinks Shortell might be different (in a good way) than previous QB recruits? There is just something about him that says this guy is going to be good. I know on the vote for this year's favorite recruit, he got a lot of consideration.

I like his pocket presence and the way he can land a long pass on the money. He throws with authority and looks like the real deal.

I enjoy reading comments about recruits and potential recruits by those on GopherHole who do NOT have a clue what Kill and his crew are looking at. But our opinions are more valuable than the Coaching Staff, of whom all know what they are looking for. Opinions/Name Dropping > The Guys who are doing it for a living and for the improvement of Gopher Football. Sorry, our opinions mean < 0. that is the way it should be, but it makes for great conversation. :banghead:

Yep, I follow HS football pretty closely and I get pretty interested in recruiting, so I certainly have opinions on who I like and who I don't like (in-state) but the fact is that my opinion doesn't matter and even I trust Coach Kill's opinion more than mine. For instance, I thought Veldman (signed at NDSU) was good enough to get an offer but if Kill didn't think so, I am more prone to think that I was wrong than Coach Kill made a mistake.

Mollberg is already 6'4" 220 lbs, I would think we offer him and if he accepts we let him practice with the QBs until their is a clear cut winner. Mollberg certainly has the size to be able to bulk up and play TE or H-Back as well.

Having eaten lunch right next to Mollberg's whole family today, I would bet lots of money that Mollberg is no where near 220 but he might be 6'4. He does look like he could put on weight though so switching positions is definitely in the picture. His dad was also decked out in gopher gear so it looks like they had a good time at the U.

Kind of like the guys that already have Shortell as the backup and Alipate playing TE.

Come on, folks. As a Head Coach, you recruit every position every year. You never know who is going to pan out, who is going to get hurt, who is going to leave school.

You make no guarantees to any player that you cannot come through on.

Competition is the lifeblood of a successful program. There are no guaranteed starters. Good players make other good players great. TAKE ALL THE PLAYERS YOU CAN GET.

Any analysis of player abilities, starters, and comparisons to who's already on the team and will be on the team is nonsensical.

No one can predict the future, but you can prepare for it.

I, for one, have not forgotten about Parrish. I expect him to win the 2nd string position this year and don't see any reason why he couldn't fend off a challenge from Shortell next year. I haven't seen him play but just looking at his numbers and how he's been described he looks like he'd be great in this system and he'll have an extra year of maturity and acclimation under his belt too.

btw, welcome aboard Phil!!!

Yeah, Parish is obviously not going to get as much love from the coaching staff because there isn't really anyway for him to have shown them much. He doesn't have any game film (from not playing) and they haven't started practice yet.

Parish, coincedentally, has a skill set that is pretty similar to that of Chandler Harnish (coming out of HS) so he is a fit for the system and he was about as equally touted coming out of HS as Shortell.

Rivals is no longer listing Nelson as verballed as of this morning, is this just a glitch or something happen?

It's a glitch. If you search MN offers for 2012 you will get 23 sometimes and 16 sometimes. Then if you are on the list of 16 and select by alphabet, it will switch to 23 players. They have a lot issues with all their links updating together. I just looked and Nelson is still listed.

Nelson is a GREAT get for the gophers. He is probably the best QB recruit from Minnesota since Weber back in 2006 and in my opinion has more potential than Weber did. Let's hope so at least! I think Nelson will have a great career at the U.
