Philip Nelson

Mollberg's offers are pretty weak. I wouldn't be surprised if Kill finds a way to land him as well.

I hate highlight reels, can anybody give an objective veal of Nelson? I'm hearing probably a rivals 3 star recruit based on current rankings. Better HS player than Weber?

I saw this thread and didn't even bother to click on it at first, figuring it was somebody bumping an old thread about Nelson. I would have given the Gophers a less than 20% chance of getting him. Whatever "it" is, Kill seems to have it. I have a feeling this year's class is going to end up pretty decent and the 2012 class will rival Brewster's 2008 class.

I updated the stories with Nelson's quotes. The commitment seems solid for all the fans who were worried about our neighbors from the East grabbing him.

I'm a little biased since I live in Mankato and am pretty involved with the football program at West, but Phil is a VERY good player. I could have seen him getting a four star ranking with another strong year (and plenty more offers), but because he committed early I'm guessing he will be a three star.

He has a strong arm, good accuracy, good mechanics, and good vision. He's a pretty explosive runner as far as QBs go, too. I can't comment on if he is a better HS player than Weber was, but I'm willing to bet he's gonna be a solid QB down the road. From watching a few games as well, he doesn't seem to stare down his WRs that much either.

Wow, kid seems solid. Thanks Chris.

I think it's safe to say that no MN kid is out of the running for the Gophers with Kill. I know we said the same thing about Dunbar and Webb (about wanting to go other places), but I have to believe we have a good shot at everyone now.

Wow -- just read the interview (thanks, Chris) and I love this kid's attitude. I wish him the best this next year in Mankato, and I'm excited to see him in the Maroon and Gold.

Looks as if Nelson has been their target rather than Mollberg. Now that Nelson is on board, it will be interesting to see if Mollberg gets an offer. I hope Coach Kill goes hard after a good number of MN kids something that Brewster didn't. I know some may be marginal D-1 players, but Brewster basically let them go to the Dakotas and brought in equals from far away places.

When I opened up this thread and read that Nelson verballed to the Gophers, two words came to mind: "Konrad Zagzebski". Any who remember his recruitment will recall that he made similarly strong statements after he verballed to Brewster. In reality, it turned out that it was nothing more than a ploy to draw an offer from Madison. My radar is going off and telling me that this smells the same. I don't mean to harsh the positive vibes in this thread, but I'm conditioned to expect the worst as a Gopher fan. I would love to see his commitment hold and be proven wrong next February, as the kid looks like a stud.

dp, you're not the only one that had the konrad light go off, but did you have to go there? Please knock on the closest piece of wood for us superstitious folk... :)

Read Monter's interview. Nelson isn't even going to Madison's Junior day, or any other school's. He's not going to any other camps this summer either. He sounds about as solid as it gets. Plus, it wasn't as though he committed over the phone in a two minute conversation. It sounds like he brought his entire family and his h.s. coach with him up to Minneapolis to meet with Coach Kill in person and tell him face to face.

I think this is as solid of a verbal as it gets, and I'm pumped. If we can get Nelson, we have a shot at all of these MN kids, and wouldn't that be a story if they ALL stayed home? Now THAT would be a story!

Not trying to start drama in the thread, but that was exactly what came to my mind too. I think we can all attest to the fact that kids in this day in age will say one thing and another week later they are saying something else. That Konrad fiasco was the worst.

I am cynical as anyone here but doesn't it get tiring looking at the glass as only half filled? What happened with the last regime does not have to happen with the new one. We have a great stadium and a new coach who is from the midwest, teaches fundamentals and seems like a genuinely nice guy. I think the recruits see what I see and like him and will stick with him.

Yeah. If this were some kind of underhanded ploy to draw Becky's interest, I highly, highly doubt he'd have brought his Dad and his HS coach with him to personally meet with Coach Kill and his staff to commit here, and he said in Chris Monter's interview that they all got emotional about it.

If this were some kind of ploy, I'd have to think he'd have made his 'commitment' in some kind of perfunctory 2 minute phone call or something like that. It's an entirely different thing when you're bringing family and coach with you and to personally look into the Gophers coaches eyes as you're committing to them, and if he weren't sincere about that, he'd be lying right to their faces, and that's not easy to do and most people of decent character would not do it.

Maybe I'm being naive or just not cynical enough, but I just don't see. Anyway, welcome Phillip Nelson!

We have a committment from a MINNESOTA fb player (although dark side ties) that brought his family and HS coach to see Coach Kill and make his committment face to face with Coach. Why does this board have to bring up from last year the sconnie kid and previous coach. I believe this is an entirely different situation because this is a Minnesota Junior that would not have to make a decision for almost a year on his choice, but chose to committ NOW and not attend other camps or Junior Days. We have committments from three top Minnesota kids. Lets enjoy the ride!

I also was cynical at first due to the Konrad ploy, but Konrad did not have guys like Andre McDonald and Rallis in his ear. All of these Junior events coupled with social media, make it so these guys are pretty good friends by the time they get to campus. Each and everyday he remains committed, the more likely he will stay committed (IMO). The more people you have to hurt by a decision, the harder it is to make. I think all of these junior events will do a great job of making all of these 2012 guys want to do something great together.

I thinks Kill is driving some locomotive that will take a whole bunch of home grown kids where they want to go. There is no stopping the train once it gains speed.

Welcome aboard, Philip!
I, too, am wondering now about Mollberg. Maybe he can find a spot playing a different position? WR or DB, perhaps?

Didn't want of the assistant coaches say that he was going to look each of the in state recruits in the eyes and dare them to leave the state. I think we may be seeing that. We got ourselves a staff ladies and gentlemen.

I'm going to predict that he never gets a Wisconsin offer anyway.

It all depends on whether he goes to their JR day or not. I don't think WI is going to offer a QB who never attended their JR day because they likely will only recruit 1 QB. A position like QB, you have much less room for error and it seems like a coach really puts a premium on being familiar with the prospect.

Mollberg is already 6'4" 220 lbs, I would think we offer him and if he accepts we let him practice with the QBs until their is a clear cut winner. Mollberg certainly has the size to be able to bulk up and play TE or H-Back as well.

QB

This is great and hopefully the kid keeps his word! The staff can concentrate on other recruits.

I bet he gets redshirted.

Yeah, Nelson will have an almost zero chance of not being RS unless something screwy happens with out QB position (position changes, transfers, injuries). But, our QB depth chart will have Gray, Parish, Shortell, Alipate and even Pride...
