Phil Nelson

That adds a little intrigue to the game.

Wow, but after watching Shortell last Saturday, maybe we had no choice.

Should be very interesting to see how he reacts/plays his first game in a hostile environment.

But lets hypothetically say he puts up HUGE numbers. He'll come back to campus as a god. Go Gophers!

If they want to pull his redshirt now they better plan on making Nelson the starting QB from here on out even when Q gets healthy again.

+1 Id agree with this. I am actually blown away about the timing....as usual....probably a lot more to the story than I know.

I think that is part of the problem. Gray is probably going to be 2-3 weeks away and Shortell just did not seem to be comfortable and mobile enough, or else he got injured as well. Kinda disappointing he has to start, but maybe they can start the red shirt QBs with the next one.

While pulling the redshirt now is stupid it is good we will have a QB who fits kills system with experience. I am looking forward to seeing what this kid has got tomorrow after there's been a lot of hype about him.

Fact - You don't know what a fact is.

Fact is Triple D knows a little more about football than you. Same goes for you Bob_Loblaw. Did you hear Nelson is going to start?

Gotta give myself a pat on the back for that one. All Hail Triple D!

I say let's do it. If the kid is half as good as advertised and better than Shortell there is nothing to lose. Had we connected on throws to DCT in the Iowa game and Engel and/or Fruechte in the NW game we could easily be 5-1 or do I dare even 6-0 now. The strength of this team is the WR's and TE, we need to capitalize on that now while we have it. Get Nelson some experience and if Streveler pans out we can red shirt him next year and have a good succession plan for the future. Do you think Nelson would like his first game to be against the Badgers, I'd imagine he'd be sky high and have something to play for. Plus Kill likes to talk about how young we are anyway.

Nice work Triple D! Going to Vegas soon?

Nelson is starting because he's our best QB. What a concept.

Helps that Streveler is lighting it up.

Whoever gives the Gophers the best chance to win should play (period). It sucks if a freshman QB gives us the best chance to win, regardless of whether it is due to injury or performance. I long for the day when the starting QB for the Gophers is consistently a junior or senior, but unfortunately we ain't there yet.

.....I am sitting in a Madison hotel more interested in tomorrow's game than I was prior to leaving the Twin Cities mid-afternoon. I only hope that I leave Madison tomorrow afternoon with some sense of optimism for the future...

Playing Nelson this year would screw someone over big time. If Nelson plays it has to be all in on him, meaning he is the full-time starter the rest of the season. It would also mean the end of Shortels career as a gopher. Regardless of any rhetoric about a open QB competition, Shortel would have to know its Nelsons job. Or Nelson would lose a year as a stop gap in a meaningless season.

For those who don't like the idea of burning Nelson's redshirt....sucks being you.

I had heard he was starting but was seriously hoping that wasn't the case.....wow! I don't like it for all the reasons above.

Would it be crazy to pull Phil Nelson's redshirt? I don't think Shortell is the long term answer, who knows when Gray will be at full strength. There's still 6 (maybe 7) games left, why not throw him out there, let him play the rest of the way, let him get his feet wet, let him hit the floor running towards next season? Just throwing it out there.

Well my friend, kudos on your post. You were on top of it. You're like the Nostradamus of Gopherhole.(You have any tips on some investments?)
