Phil Mackey: Awkward win over Indiana proves Gophers are not contenders

Classic

A media member's first post and he pulls out Colin Cowherd's belove "mouth-breather" reference. Not very original, but I'll buy it.

Not living locally in the MSP area, and hearing all of the banter on here about outlets like KFAN, et al, I can't really decide if I'm better or worse off that I can't listen to MSP sports talk radio. From the sounds of it, I would imagine that I'm not missing much?

I'm curious to know how many Gopher fans in general spend much time listening to sports talk radio? I admittedly never listened to ANY talk radio, even sports, until I was at least 30 or a year or two later. Just considered it a sign of "getting old".

I listen to Colin Cowherd on ESPN Radio, sometimes Scott Van Pelt after that, mostly music on satellite radio outside of that. I have to admit, I really really enjoy Cowherd. You may or may not agree with all he says but he's generally spot on with most of his takes.

As far as Mackey (who?) and his take on the Indiana game, which I didn't read but can gather enough from what has been said here; Considering what we've heard about the events of the week leading up to the game with Devoe, would you expect anything other than a clumsy uncoordinated effort? If things played out as some have said, the team knew that something very serious was happening with Joseph. I would have expected the Gophers to look like crap and they did.

I expect nothing other than a spirited, united effort against OSU. If not, I'll be more concerned than I am about a lackluster win against an improving Indiana team.

Oh, so you liked PA, Jr. better?

/thread participation.

Good talk.

Considering I like PA a lot more than I do Reusse, I'd have to say yes. I will say this for you though, at least you're not Souhan, Jr. If you ever go to that last awful extreme, you're dead to me. And I know how much that would pain you.

Mackey wishes he was Cowherd, he's not. Reusse's got him on leash and he keeps his collar up far too high for Phil to ever reach it. This dude likes this attention and he doesn't care if he's right or not, he just wants to keep people talking...talking about him. Its from the Howard Stern school of broadcasting...if anyone has seen the movie Private Parts, there is a part where the GM of the radio station is reading ratings and says something like: "People who love Howard Stern listen for on average 65 minutes a day, people who despise Howard listen on average 96 minutes a day." Controversy works. Rush Limbaugh does it too. He's a staunch right winger, so then why do all these liberals listen everyday? Just to get pissed off at whatever he says next.

So keep fanning the flame for him. He wants you to. Its smart by Phil IMO. I'm not even saying his take is that outlandish...but whatever. He needs to do something because honestly that show sucks. Its like an abortion in my ears. Reusse needs to be put out to pasture on the radio. God forbid, but that fat f*** will keel over someday soon at the rate he's going.

media guys

I have to admit to having NEVER heard of Doogie or Mackey before they posted here or were discussed here.

I do have two complaints about Doogie.

1. He constantly "defends" his media brethren and it comes off like a brown noser to me.

2. He once told a certain GH member that he would have him on air to talk about gopher hoops, the hole, etc, and it never happened. Man up Doogie.

In any case Mr. Mackey, welcome to the mosh pit.

Section201: 1) It's because I know these individuals, and in many cases, extremely well. You, and others, don't, and continually spew false statements (not pointing that finger at you... in general)
2) Him and I even swapped emails in the last few weeks. I have not forgotten, and welcome an on-air back-and-forth. The last few times that I have filled in on 1500, so given editorial control over the entire show, other topics were more pertinent. I'd talk Gophers for 2 straight hours, but unfortunately, many in the audience don't care.

I have to admit I don't know who Mackey is either. :)

The times I've heard Doogie though - I've found him engaging, although, a bit stiff in his delivery. No offense, I hope.

So Phil's article and the criticism of it is what brings him here:

I don't think he said anything I would disagree with, although, I'm curious, as the article didn't present anything new, to me at least, or I would think anyone here discussing Tubby and Gopher team, in other words, it's all stuff we've heard before - what's your background in basketball Phil and how are you qualified to present your opinion?

What is the #mouthbreather tag, by the way, for those of apparently not well informed?

.

I listen to a good amount on XM - Cowherd, Dan Patrick, Chris Russo, Doug Gottlieb, and a bit of JT the Brick...little bit of 1500 here and there. (I drive a lot) I think overall 1500 is much better than KFAN, as the fan is so cynical and I cant stand Paul Allen at all.

1. False statements on an internet chat board? YIPES, how could that be???

2. It was something you said you would do but have yet to follow through on. That is all I am saying.

He forgets more about the Twins in a mili-second than you'll ever know. Has a "great gig" because he's earned it.

The only reason he has more insight is because of his access. I follow the Twins pretty closely. I've never heard him say anything that I didn't already know on the Fan or your new station. I did hear him say that Orlando Hudson wasn't "a gold glove second baseman" despite Hudson's multiple Gold Gloves. I did hear him rip Orlando Cabrera as not a number 2 hitter as OCab led us to a division title by hitting in the 2 hole. And when I contacted him to retract his lunacy in that regard, he acted like a teenaged girl.

I've also seen him turn into a total pantywaist when anyone disagrees with him. I like you, Doogie, but Phil Mackey is an average baseball mind considering his gig. I'll let you know when I gain knowledge from a take of his. Were I in his shoes, I'd try to give info. that wasn't known by most of the ticket paying public.

Don't turn into the Phil Mackey of message boards, Doogs. Please, I beg you.

If you think my Twins takes are homerish, you clearly don't read/listen very often :)

So much venom in this forum. How about a reasonable discussion?

#Mouthbreathers

Haha. Yes, the immature musings of Phil Mackey. This is exactly what I'm talking about. The arrogance.

On a side note, I do like Reusse, and I listen to your show when I can. I'll just never understand why you're so sensitive when people disagree with you or call you out for your elementary takes. I didn't even read the Gopher article linked here. Let me just say that the next time you tell me something about Twins baseball that I hadn't read, heard, or seen elsewhere will be the first. I do enjoy your passion for the Twins, and I love that you talk about them on the radio regularly. I find that enjoyable.

I wish I had your access and your job. You're a lucky guy. Just please lose the arrogance when dealing with us commonfolk. It makes you seem, well, immature. Good luck.

Don't call Phil arrogant, he has earned it. He's a sidekick on a non-drive time radio show on one of only two sports talk radio stations this moderately large market in flyover land.

/Has not listened to KSTP since they fired Mischke
//Has never listened to KFAN

I came to this party late but I must say that I am not impressed by the professionalism of the media members involved.

They're on here picking fights with GH members because many GH members disagree with statements made in a story based on one man's opinion of the gophers this year.

Write your story. Express your opinion. That's fine, but don't act like a child and start slinging mud the instant someone disagrees with you or states their opinion of your work.

You don't see members of the gophers bb team whining as a result of your opinion stating they aren't contenders.

So please do us a favor do your job, live with the public reaction or get a new job if you can't handle people's criticism. You chose this line of work knowing people would disagree with something you wrote. You knew damn well while you were sitting in front of the computer writing this piece that it would ruffle some feathers.

Frankly, Doogie name calling every time some one criticizes his work or the work of one of his friends (whether rightfully deserved or not) is getting old. So do your job, most of your work is pretty good, and leave the other petty crap out of here. Thanks.

Finally, The gophers haven't blown anyone out all season so it shouldn't be a shock when they were in a close game with Indiana. I never thought negative press could come from a victory. A win is a win whether its by 40 points or 1 point. Not all wins are pretty but the result is still a tally in the lefthand column.
