Phil Mackey: Awkward win over Indiana proves Gophers are not contenders

OTM

Its not because Dubay can't take the criticism. It's because they don't allow inmates to have email accounts and internet access. #lowblowfromanasshole

In all seriousness, Mackey is rock solid. Reusse/Mackey at noon is, without a doubt, the best sports radio show in this market for at least a decade. Maybe the golden era of Chad & Berreiro when Common was popping in rivals it, but other than that, nothing is even close to what those two have had going since the format change on 1500.

Um, weren't they recently teamed together when ESPN bought out 1500?

Hear you :)... but trust me, I can promise you that when I've gotten it, it's not meant as such.

Um, weren't they recently teamed together when ESPN bought out 1500?

Yes. And their program is better than any other program put on any other station in the last decade. That doesn't mean they've been on the air for the last ten years.

If I said, "That's the best sneeze I've had in 10 years", it doesn't mean the sneeze lasted 10 years. It means of all the sneezes I've had in the last 10 years, this one I just had was the best.

But it's tainted by the blur into Soucheray's "sports talk".

But it's tainted by the blur into Soucheray's "sports talk".

I agree. Soucheray seems like he's just mailing it in. He only seemed tangentally interested in sports during the weekly Saturday program, but that was kind of what made it funny. Pat controlling the conversation, Rookie goofing around, and Joe just being kind of oblivious and crumudgeony. He doesn't seem to care enough about sports to keep it going 5 days a week.

Hell, they use most of "sports talk" to just summarize everything covered on Reusse/Mackey. And that weird hour of condensed Garage Logic is even more jarring.

I've never heard of this guy, but he's off to a great start talking about the Gophers. First off, who ever really thought this team was a title contender? We've always been a 3rd place finisher at best, and the Indiana game didn't prove that we somehow now aren't because of one game. Maybe he has some points in there, but "Awkward win over Indiana proves Gophers are not contenders" tells me that he probably should just stop writing about the Gophers. If he thinks a small victory in college bball PROVES something like that, well, enough said. What did the Ohio State super impressive victory against powerhouse Iowa "prove"? I hope he pulls a doogie and comes to defend that absurd headline.

Reusse and Mackey is an awful radio show. You really can't blame Phil though, Reusse just rambles on and on. It wouldn't matter if Mackey blurts that he enjoys midget clown sex, Reusse would still blather on with whatever stream of nonsense he's going on. There's no chemisty and there's no back and forth. Its not Phil's fault, no one could team with Reusse and make it interesting. 1500 would be better served setting up a microphone at the end of the bar at the VFW while some old drunks recycle half-witted sports takes. Reusse is un-listenable.

1500 should scrap the old dogs in Reusse, Soucheray (he's awful too) and Phunn and try to get current with the times. These KFAN retreads (I mean that in the best possible way) can only take you so far. If you're going to go with KFAN talent, you might as well try to lure over Sludge and give him a good time slot and a cast of cronies. Do something, because 1500 has plateaued and if they are happy, then fine.
Mackey loves the attention, good or bad, and he always thinks he's right, especially on the Twins. Mackey doesn't know anything about college basketball comparatively. His niche is baseball, he knows his stuf and he's fine when he can talk about that in a tone that isn't condescending to anyone who doesn't use VORP.

Doogie, after 14 years I figured you would have known that arguing with rubes on a message board is going to get you nowhere. I appreciate you sticking up for your buddy, but what's the point? It makes you look amateur. Everyone knows you work hard at your job, and you are dedicated and that you do a good job. They'd start respecting you if you didn't lower yourself down with the rubes all the time.

just my rube opinion.

Juicer: I wouldn't be on year 14 doing what I do if I didn't have thick skin... here's what is thin skin: a certain radio announcer in town with ties to the Gophers who won't have a work email because he can't take the criticism. I don't react to 80% of the things thrown my way. But in this instance, knowing Phil as well as I do, I will absolutely defend him.
The Gophers have a very good team this year. Probably one of the 20 best in the country. However to be a Big Ten title contender you have to be one of the ten best in the country. Saying we are not contenders is not saying much. People need to quit whining and be happy with what we got.

So you think the Gophers are title contenders?

To say that this game doesn't prove that the Gophers are not title contenders doesn't imply that believing that they are title contenders.

Nobody had us as contenders at the beginning of the season to start with. Enough with the stupid sky is falling articles and posts. While we haven't played as well as we should be playing and have in the early part of the season we are still right where most people thought we would be.

Hogwash. Plenty of people thought we could contend and not just posters on the GopherHole. Was anyone predicting we indeed would be Big Ten champs- no. Contenders? Yes. Wisconsin has won 2 or three Big Ten titles in the past 10 years or so and no one can tell me we didn't start the season with as much talent as they had in any one of their runs. It just hasn't blended together - so far. I'm not just talking about being 1 and 2 at this point in the Big Ten at this point in the season. I'm talking about how difficult it has been for us to beat the ordinary teams we have beaten and what the whole product looks like on the floor. It just hasn't materialized like we might have hoped.

I listened to the show when I was driving through the Twin Cities over the holidays. Reusse was gone that week so he wasn't on. I don't remember who was filling in for him, but I thought the show was pretty good. It was nice to hear some actual informed talk about sports. A lot different from what you hear on kfan.

Only the homers had us any higher than finishing 4-6. Top 3 would be considered contenders and anything else would have an unrealistic outside chance at contending. Who said anything about wisconsin? I would agree with you on your last point though.

The last time I listened to Mackey was during the final week or two of the Twins regular season, he constantly repeated himself saying how the Twins were going to beat the Yankees this time because the Twins had this amazing winning percentage during the 2nd half(didn't mention it was against the AL central), Joe Mauer was a hitting machine, Good Old Gardy, Pavano this, Crain that, on and on ... I knew at that point in time the guy's opinion was about as valuable as Dick Bremer's and that was enough for me. I'm guessing he goes negative on the Gophers to balance his homerish tendencies for the Twins.

If you think my Twins takes are homerish, you clearly don't read/listen very often :)

So much venom in this forum. How about a reasonable discussion?

Interesting...electing to go out with "mouthbreathers" on your first post after asking for reasonable discussion is pretty antithetical wouldn't you say?

Truth be told, I'd never heard of you until someone posted the link on here to your website, but I will say Post #1 is pretty audacious.

The reasonable discussion ship has already sailed in this thread...

So what the hell, let's lob some stones :)

Did Reusse get in any trouble for his comment on Monday that he's okay with football players extending out with the ball to reach the goal line if it's a black guy who is doing it?

Just curious. Seemed like the kind of remark that some people might criticize.

Good to have Phil on here. Should I attempt to organize a post-Purdue game gathering somewhere (guessing Phil will be covering... I'll be there with my wife)? An actual discussion away from the keyboard, or is that idea dumb?

It sailed between the time you suggested it and your hashtag? You must be a slow typist.

P.S. You were more palatable when you were PMac, and talked about poker, not your current iteration as Fat Pat, Jr.

P.P.S. How's that for stone-throwing?

I really like Ruesse and Mackey and totally agree that Soucheray is "mailing it in". I get the feeling that he knows a lot more than he lets on at times and plays the fool for effect (or is it affect...I am sure Doogie can correct me if I'm wrong. After all he is a journalist).

If the previous two posts were really by Phil Mackey I am a bit disappointed in his mouthbreather comment though.

That said I love to listen to Ruesse and Mackey during baseball season.

I take exception to Doogies "little finger" defense of Mackey. I would have hoped a 14 year veteran could have come up with a snappier retort.

I've posted on rubechat for years, and I can tell you that gatherings of those hooligans never leads to any good. Maybe this crowd is more mannerly though.

I would not assume that "Phil Mackey" is who you think it is. It is a new account and has only two [unprofessional] posts.

I can 100% promise you that it's Phil Mackey.

Oh, so you liked PA, Jr. better?

/thread participation.

Good talk.
