Phil Mackey: Awkward win over Indiana proves Gophers are not contenders

Awkward article proves Phil Mackey is an idiot for determining title contenders 3 games into the season.

So you think the Gophers are title contenders?

Ohio St. is losing at half time against Iowa. Does that prove they are not contenders?

Dude is a muckraker and trying to make a name for himself, let him have his fun. He knows Reusse will not be around forever and is in the midst of a public tryout.

Here we go with another Twins PR guy writing about Gopher sports.

I follow the Twins closely. I can tell you that Phil Mackey isn also not an expert on the Twins. He's an ultra sensitive dweeb who has a great gig.

That said, I don't necessarily believe anything he says. And when you call him on being wrong, he refuses to admit it despite ample evidence to the contrary. I would put zero stock into what he says. I can't believe Reusse willingly works with him. I've had a couple back-and-forths with him, and I have seen him in action on message boards.

So he says they will win 20 games. They will win NCAA games. They will compete with Ohio State and Purdue.

What is his point about NOT being contenders now?

He forgets more about the Twins in a mili-second than you'll ever know. Has a "great gig" because he's earned it.

Just because someone has earned a great gig (I have no way of confirming or refuting this suggestion) does not mean they are good at their job, let alone infallible. It's a cut-throat business and a lot of happenings are out in the open, so don't get into the media if you have a thin skin. Nice to see that birds of a feather flock together, however.

It's great that you boys play poker together and everything, Doogie, and your loyalty is touching. But PMac is not an exceptional baseball mind. I liked him a bit when he was on KFAN, but he's been influenced a little by Reusse, there's no question. He's picked up Fat Pat's "anger all of the people all of the time as a substitute for interesting takes and good reporting." And, whether he's earned his job or not (I don't know) has nothing to do with whether he knows more than anybody else. Hard as it may be for you to believe, there are quite a few people not in traditional media who know far more than even the most knowledgeable media members. Your privilege of holding a press pass does not make you smarter, or more knowledgeable than the average fan.

Hey, I've got a suggestion: Let's have a pi$$ing contest. That would be something different!

We will start by having participants join my Pistol Club. We will drink till midnight and pistol 2 a.m. Attendance is mandatory.

Doogie, relax dude. Let people have their opinions, it's just how it's supposed to work in this great country. For someone who is and has been on the radio, you have pretty thin skin.

RELAX dude.

I think Mackey is quite knowledeable regarding the Twins and it is clear he has a passion for baseball. He works hard at it and I believe he is at almost all of the games and working the clubhouse. He's a nice fit with that part of his gig.

As for his Gopher football and basketball takes, he's utterly clueless. He admits he's a U grad who doesn't care much about the Gophers. And, that's fine. But, then he tries to make claims about both the teams based on things he doesn't know much about. That said, I didn't see much wrong with this particular article, other than he made the assumption that everyone thinks this team is a title contender. I'm guessing if you polled Gopher fans, 95% of them would say their team won't win the Big Ten title this year, so I don't think he's breaking any new ground by proclaiming that the Gophers aren't going to win the title.

I will say (and I may be in the minority), I have enjoyed his show with Reusse. They have a decent on-air chemistry given the age and experience difference. I have ripped Reusse in the past about his writings and rantings, but I will give him credit for helping this kid along. They get along on the air and the show is usually enjoyable to listen to (again I understand some will disagree with this).

My god you're a clown. Statements like this are the reason people don't take you seriously.

Were you crying when you wrote this? Pounding your keyboard? I'm sure you texted whoever the hell Phil Mackey is and told him about this thread and how you defended his honor. Hilarious.

Good luck in Mason City when you guys get your next "promotion".

Truth is before this thread I didn't even know who Phil Mackey was, but I must say I wasn't offended at all by his main point. When I look at the Gophers right now, I certainly don't see a Big Ten title contender, though that was my hope/expectation before the season started.

With the parts they have now (no Joseph, no Walker) I see a team that will grind away & win quite a few Big Ten games (probably 10-12) but not be good enough over the long haul to compete with Ohio State, Michigan State, Purdue and (maybe) Illinois for a Big Ten championship. I have not given up on this team being capable of being a factor (winning a game or two) in March Madness. It'll be a lot more difficult now, sure, but it's not out of the realm of possibility.

I agree, enjoy the show myself.

I do find it strange that a U of M alum working the Twin Cities sports media market is not a Gopher fan.

Right now they are not contenders. They were bad last year at this time also and really developed halfway through the season. No reason it won't happen this year again. Time will tell.

How can anyone watch this team and think they are actual BT title contenders? Mackey's points are valid.

Juicer: I wouldn't be on year 14 doing what I do if I didn't have thick skin... here's what is thin skin: a certain radio announcer in town with ties to the Gophers who won't have a work email because he can't take the criticism. I don't react to 80% of the things thrown my way. But in this instance, knowing Phil as well as I do, I will absolutely defend him.

BTW, Phil who?

I had never heard of this Phil guy til this thread. That a guy named Doogie has to defend him on a college hoops board is all I really need to know.

I think the article is highly accurate and realistic.

That's what I'm holding out for. I have to break the game up into three segments, but I can find some reasons to be encouraged. The first half we were bad. Nothing to be encouraged about there. However, the team has just found out a teammate and arguably your third best player has quit. After all they have been through last year, that has to affect you going into a game. Unlike Tubby. I didn't think they came ready to play.

IMO. they were ready coming out of the half. I liked what I saw for about 18 minutes of the second half when we definitely outplayed Indiana. Al took over the second half by attacking which was nice to see, and the glimpses of how effective Rodney can be when he also goes to the basket were also encouraging. These two have to continue to do that. Watford is a really good player and Trevor simply dominated him in any match-up. If he can just learn to hit 2 or 3 of those mid-range jumpers, it's really going to boost his game even more. Maverick's play was also encouraging. He's not going to blow by you but if he can hit a couple of outside shots a game and take care of the ball, we might be okay. Looking for more rays, Blake's game is still evolving. The little runner has become a nice weapon for him and maybe Tubby will find more ways to utilize it.

The last two minutes got pretty tense and not much encouraging there, just rationalization and blind hope. The two big complaints all year of allowing 3's and missing free throws almost bit us big time. However, I did think we were quicker defending the 3 for most of the game and Colton was 4 out of 4 on free throws.

I think Selection's prediction is right on but there's still potential for more here. Ralph and Colton have got to play a lot better to reach it, and somebody (Trevor?) has to become the type of player to take over a game.

As long as I'm wishing. No more injuries or drama either.

It's Dave Lee, isn't it? He seems like a baby. Also, he's incompetent. How did this city get cursed with incompetent media members like Lee and Souhan? We haven't had a good, knowledgeable sports show on air in this town since Dubay's meltdown, and none of our writers are any better than mediocre (with only Reusse having the talent to be good). I enjoy people like you, and Sludge, and PMac a lot more than the old guard, but that doesn't mean that you guys are immune from criticism.

Of course not immune. I welcome legit back-and-forth. All that has ever bothered me is when someone will say, "I can't believe your wife married you", or "How does an ugly guy like you get to do TV?" Never have understood those types of personal shots.

Dude, you're supposed to agree with that one. That makes her feel good.

OTM

Its not because Dubay can't take the criticism. It's because they don't allow inmates to have email accounts and internet access. #lowblowfromanasshole

In all seriousness, Mackey is rock solid. Reusse/Mackey at noon is, without a doubt, the best sports radio show in this market for at least a decade. Maybe the golden era of Chad & Berreiro when Common was popping in rivals it, but other than that, nothing is even close to what those two have had going since the format change on 1500.

Dude, you're supposed to agree with that one. That makes her feel good.

Not only are you supposed to agree with that one, you are supposed to believe it yourself.

Fact is, the only valid reason for getting married is, "this chick will actually MARRY me? Holy crap have I over-exceeded expectations. Lock it in."

If you aren't surprised your wife married you it probably means there is a better chick out there that would have.
