"For anyone watching Maryland basketball's win at
Marquette last week, Pharrel Payne's injury looked gruesome. The Terps' star big man slipped and crumbled to the floor, screaming in pain as his legs twisted violently, and had to be stretchered off the court. It looked like a textbook season-ending injury.
It turns out it was nowhere near as serious as it appeared. While head coach
Buzz Williams has
declined to share updates on his small army of injured players, it sounds like Payne could be back on the court next week for the team's trip to the Players Era tournament in
Las Vegas next week.
"I was worried that he had broken the lower leg or something. And you know, they'll splint you right away if there's a fracture on the floor. And there was no splint. And in retrospect, he got on the bus smiling after the game. Obviously he was sore. He said that they had x-rayed his hip but everything seemed to be fine. I think, more than anything, it just scared him. It scared me, and I was in the mezzanine. So, it was just one of those really fluky things and thank goodness he's ok,"
Maryland basketball radio analyst Chris Knoche said on the Big Bad Morning Show on 105.7 The Fan.
