"If the Gophers lose @ Purdue tomorrow it will be announced after the game that Tim Brewster will be out at the end of the season."

followed by:

"When Brewster is made a lame duck he will need to decide if its worth 200k to deal with media & administration for additional 5 weeks."

I can't tell if this is a scoop or just some kind of hunch (any insight, Doogie?). Thought it might be worth posting on the chance that it is based on some sort of fact.

Very very interesting. I hope to hell they have a plan in place should then lame duck him publicly after the game.

Heard him say it on the top of the hour news before Collin Cowherd. Sounded factual not speculative.

What would a win or a loss at Purdue have to do with his overall performance? One game shouldn't make or break the decision to be fired. What happens if he wins? Does Brewster get a 4 year multi-million dollar contract? Sheesh....

I sure hope this doesn't turn into a "Maturi dealing" the way he dealt with Mason and Monson. Personally, Maturi is the head that should be on the chopping block followed by Brewster. In order for real change to take place, we need to get rid of an AD that continually makes expensive poor choices and mistakes.

So it's a move to try and save $200k, eh? IF this is true, the next week will be very very interesting.

I don't get it, why place it all on this next game?

Anything is possible around here.

Mason got canned because he made the mistake of beating Iowa. Whoops!

Ok, so this is a move to save $200k...Ok, after the Northwestern loss, Maturi probably debated the idea, came to the conclusion that it was over...and if the Gophers lose tomorrow, the team will sit at 1-6 on the season, meaning bowl eligible is all but impossible. It'd be very interest to see what'll happen if Brewster bolts.

Looking forward to the 2011 season...b/c it's not the 2010 season.

And if he does win?

If we take the way that Maturi has dealt with others....Brewster gets a 4-year multi-million contract. The next week, we lead Penn State by 35 points at half-time, only to lose 38-35 on a freak play.

Maturi holds a newsconference on Monday and says that Brewster is fired and the University is on the hook for $4 million.

Sorry to be so cynical, but Maturi has shown he cannot deal with personnel issues.

And if he does win?

THAT's the real question.
IMO if this is true, it's an ugly way to do things. Basically lame duck the coach publicly and hope he walks away leaving his buyout.

IF he does win, I would expect the lame duck status to simply shift, Purdue, Penn State, Ill are all somewhat winnable games, a victory over OSU, MSU or Iowee would be impressive.
It's going to come down to securing bowl status or not, I would be willing to bet this has already been told to Brewster. If he turns it around bully for us, we finish the season with 2 wins over top 10 teams and a late season surge. If he doesn't, it's all been laid out beforehand.

Good lord PLEASE let them have a plan beyond this, and it better include Maturi stepping down or playing a smaller role in hiring decisions, and a way to get enough money together to hire a quality candidate.

Although nearly everyone on this board realizes he us done at the end of the season, there are still those demanding he be fired now. By announcing early, they can end the speculation. This will hopefully curtail some of the negativity around the program.

Why would they do that? Fire him and be done with it if that's the plan.

Several reasons.
1) It looks terrible. Only 4 coaches have been fired like that in D-I football in over a decade. We're not an SEC heavy hitter and we can't get away with that.
2) Because then they'd have to appoint an interim coach. The players are still behind Brew. There is a better chance of player disenchantment if Brew is straight up gone. MSU did the "fire but let him coach it out" plan with John L Smith and as far as I can tell the transition was pretty smooth. If anything, the players might try to put him out on a high note as much as possible.

This is a terrible idea. If the administration announces Brew is gonna be gone what's going to prevent the players from packing it in? The results on the field have been horrendous, but by and large the players are still playing hard. There is absolutely nothing to be gained from firing Brew before the conclusion of the Iowa game.

Nothing.

Let the feeding frenzy begin...by doing this early, there will be people who make "unofficial" contact with the university to get a sense of interest. It will increase the candidate pool and maybe someone that was thought of as "ungettable" let's Maturi know he is interested. I like it. Let's get a jump on the others that wil lbe hiring. Let's get the best guy available.

I don't get it, why place it all on this next game?

Probably because it is viewed by "those concerned" as the only winnable game left on the schedule. It would signify two 0-fer Big Ten seasons out of his four here.

You realize what this means.... the Gophers will beat Purdue.

I think this will help in that fans will begin looking forward and hopefully lay off the current coaching staff and team while at the same time allowing the search to start immediately and publicly.

Along with John L Smith, Florida did it with Zook. The players went out on a high note for him, winning his last game against Florida State.

It could have guys packing it in, but it also could rally guys. If it happened after this weeekend, them rallying around Brew & beating Penn State wouldn't shock me in the least. And you know the Iowa game would have a lot of emotion amongst the coaches & players.

The biggest downside I see is in-season recruiting....but there's no way it could go any worse than it did during the Mason-Brewster transition.

I thought about this a little more and wanted to expand on my thoughts. This is what I just posted over at The Daily Gopher (apologize for the parts that are sort of repetitive).

1) Only about 4 coaches have been canned mid-season in D-1 football in over a decade. I’m pretty sure it was Fuller who put that in an article after the NIU game. No link only because I can’t find it (and I don’t blame anyone who doesn’t believe me b/c my memory is not perfect). We’re not an SEC powerhouse. It looks bad in the coaching community if we fire a guy midseason b/c that just isn’t done.
2) Personally, I think its more likely that the players pack it in when given an interim coach to play for. They still seem to be behind Brew (he is a player’s coach) and while I’m sure some will be disappointed that he’s being let go, it gives them another reason to play hard for the guy the rest of the way. Plus, both Horton is the “new guy”. I’m sure they like him, but I doubt they know him as well as Brew. Same is sort of true for Cosgrove, but I doubt he would want the responsibility given what his family is going through. And lets face it, the kids aren’t dumb. They can probably see the writing on the wall too so what harm is there in getting the news out of the way?
3) Recruiting. It takes away the uncertainty in one way and adds it in another. We’re screwed either way, but at least recruits will know they have a new guy coming.
4) Hiring process. This gives them the benefits of a full firing (they can be open about forming a search committee, other coaches know the job is open) without the problems of #1 and #2.
5) Fans are relieved either way. There will be some yokels who keep calling for his head, but for rational fans this will be cathartic just like a full firing without the problems of #1 and #2.

Forgot about Zook. That's the best example ever. If FLORIDA won't mid-season fire a guy they really want gone then we shouldn't be doing it either. :)

I really believe that when flipping the "packing it in" coin, the odds of the team rallying are much stronger behind a lame duck Brew then with him fired and gone.

Recruiting (as I note above) is probably screwed somewhat either way. At least this way recruits know in advance they have someone knew. Who knows, it might even help if there are kids who liked MN but we're sold on Brew (especially with him on the hotseat).

I skimmed so someone may have covered this.

If this is a must win for Brewster and he does accomplish it, does that mean a 2-10 season is good enough to keep his job? I hope not.

what is the point of announcing something now that we all know will happen at the end of the season? ridiculous-unless we have a solid interim plan/coach in mind that will allow the team to play hard the rest of the way

No, just means he keeps it for another week or (if lucky) through the rest of the season. He doesn't get retained after the season @ 2-10.

Depends on if they meant for it to leak.
