I am ok with this. The real perpetrators of the Penn State scandal are either jobless, in prison or dead. Why punish the kids that dreamed of going to Penn State.

Hope I don't get hammered for saying that.

We should really have a discussion of whether these sanctions were just.

This is disgusting, the NCAA should be shamed

Good for them. The scholarship reductions were obnoxious, but the real injustice (postseason ban) cannot be reversed for this last season, and presumably will not be reversed for future seasons anytime soon if ever.

I just figured I'd get all the bickering out of the way, not like it will deter some. :)

Thanks for the chuckle Nate.

I always thought the punishment was a bit too harsh. My sympathy goes out to the individuals and families who were harmed--and harmed to a great degree--by the criminal Sandusky and the smarmy, self-satisfied apologist Paterno, but the courts--and not the playing field--are the place to sort out the damages. It is my hope that Penn State really takes it in the purse for this because there is no excuse for the behavior of the individuals directly involved and under the jurisdiction of the University.

The scandal was (and still is, if you pay attention to the JoeBots) a product of a horribly tainted culture that revered Paterno and the football program at all costs, including repeated cases of child rape that were covered up for years. The only way to punish that kind of hero worship culture is to cut off the head of the beast, and you do that by reducing scholarships to such levels that they suck for a decade or more. The NCAA, in my opinion, didn't go far enough in the first place, and now they're going to have PSU back to full strength within 3 years. That says all I need to know about their priorities.

Nate hit all of the salient points.

Seriously, though, I think I nod and agree with anyone who states an opinion. It was terrible. There should be punishments. The punishments should be severe. How do you best serve the punishment? I have no flippin' clue. It is a bit of, 'all of the above.' It is a criminal issue, a civil issue, and at least in part, an NCAA issue. How do you best distribute those? It entirely depends on what you want the outcome to be, and it seems everyone has a different desired outcome. Makes it tough to have a discussion about the proper punishment.

Well said. The real question is what does this mean for the victims, past, present and future? The signal it sends to such vile institutions is that they can commit these atrocious transgressions with little more than a slap on the wrist (spare me the nominal reductions in scholarships, petty fines, and taking away wins crap)? In other words, win at all cost or should I say at the expense of innocent children. The NCAA is more than a joke, it is sick!

This is another reason why the NCAA needs to go away and why Penn St. needed to have the death penalty.

But Ohio State gets none back for signing autographs???????? Did I miss something???????

In my opinion, I hate that they are getting these scholarships back. The institutional leadership (in my opinion, the number of folks that were aware of what was going on, or at least had an idea, and did nothing, extends well beyond the AD and the President - didn't people find it odd when Sandusky was supposedly banned from campus? but really wasn't) either ignored what was going on or tried to sweep it under the rug, hoping it would just go away. Why? Because they knew the impact such a scandal would have on the football program - period! I've heard Glen Mason say several times, "the football team shouldn't be punished because they didn't commit the crimes". Actually, those overseeing the football program, and the institution, took no action because they knew whatever action they took would lead to questions from the public that would potentially open the door to whole scandal - ultimately impacting the football program, its reputation, recruiting, etc! They prioritized the football program and the Penn State image over those kids!

This is a disgrace. Penn State, its Administration, the Pennsylvania Governor (who has complained to the NCAA about the sanctions) should all be ashamed of themselves, and so should the NCAA for caving. Again, a disgrace.

Ok Mark, if your going to give back the scholarships to Penn State, How about USC? And when will the now 5 year investigation in Miami finally come to an end? Come On, Man

The slap on the wrist just got reduced to a tickle.
