Penn State gets 5 scholarships restored, amount expected to increase

FoxSports: NCAA shows weakness once again

This was not a refreshing new take from the NCAA, as people are saying. It is the NCAA making a decision for its survival, a decision for football.

It was better a year ago, when it made the right decision for the right reasons. For people.

Go Gophers!!

This article is spot on. If Delany had a hand in helping Penn St, then he's a part of the problem and needs to go. If Delany had a hand in helping Penn St and remains B1G Commissioner, it will make us the most pathetic conference ever. If Delany did in fact help Penn St and remains in charge, it will make the SEC righteous in comparison and I for one will always rip on the B1G over the SEC or any other conference. Here is to hoping Delany had nothing to do with any of this.

Some of you here are so very uninformed or misinformed on the issue.

Almost assuredly, the reason why PSU got scholarships back was that the NCAA is realizing how far it overstepped its bounds. Undoubtedly, other over-reaching sanctions (such as the massive fines, forfeiture of games won, etc.) will be reduced as more facts (and lack thereof) become clear.

Seriously, you all should research this topic. It's important. The "rape" you all think occurred, for one, was one of the charges dropped in the Sandusky criminal trial, primarily because the abused said that it never occurred. To summarize, what McQueary thought he saw, whatever it was, was not a rape. If McQueary didn't witness a rape, then all the conjecture the world made therefrom is, at the least, taken in the improper context. There's more to this story than the lay person has heard from the media firestorm that blew this up.

No. The NCAA is cowtowing for money, like always.

The NCAA only acted due to extreme public pressure. They were forced to do something, so they did it. I firmly believe they intended to reduce the punishment on Penn St. the whole time. They simply waited until the heat died down.

If the NCAA had it's way, I don't think it would've done anything. I think the NCAA would happily look the other way, just like Penn St. Things like this have happened for thousands of years. Money corrupts, people look the other way regardless of what happens because there is money to be made. Don't kid yourself.

Penn St. should've been given the death penalty.

So Jerry Sandusky is doing 30-60 years and was officially classified as a sexually violent predator because there was no rape. I see.

Not this take.

Are you Mrs. Sandusky or a member of the Sandusky family?

Are you seriously trolling the board this hard? You realize Sandusky was convicted on seven counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, which is rape.

The fact that you said "rape" and don't think anything like that took place exposes you as either a massive troll or a truly horrible human being.

The scandal was (and still is, if you pay attention to the JoeBots) a product of a horribly tainted culture that revered Paterno and the football program at all costs, including repeated cases of child rape that were covered up for years. The only way to punish that kind of hero worship culture is to cut off the head of the beast, and you do that by reducing scholarships to such levels that they suck for a decade or more. The NCAA, in my opinion, didn't go far enough in the first place, and now they're going to have PSU back to full strength within 3 years. That says all I need to know about their priorities.

I generally agree with you Windy, and in the end I wanted the PSU program burned to the ground with a scorched earth policy that would wipe out their football culture altogether for a number of years, and truly make the university, the community, and its boosters understand what really is important. Though, admittedly - that would have been a major overreach by the NCAA.

I do like the spin Dan Bernstein put on this story today with his column, basically stating that following former senator George Mitchell's recommendation, the NCAA would soften punishment as they continued to follow the recommendations in the Freeh report (the one so many JoeBots decry and denounce). By doing this, it basically flies in the face of the JoeBots who were outraged that PSU accepted the Freeh report's findings at all.

Still, I find this move by the NCAA unsatisfying and a bit too early for my liking.

I think more blame goes to police and prosecutor from the late 1990s. They had evidence including a victim coming forward and *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# the bed on the prosecution. No charges ever filed... it's been awhile since reading the details, but I recall the cops being negligent in their investigation. Then the prosecutor neglects to press charges. He disappears sometime later and his lap top hard drive is destroyed.

I believe there was speculation that Sandusky "retired" because of the accusations. However, if your PSU and you punish a guy who the authorities refuse to prosecute doesn't that put you in potentially precarious position? Instead, he's allowed to retire with full privileges.

By no means does this excuse direct action by Jo pa, but the state passing on prosecution at least explains some initial skepticism on Penn State's part. Additionally, there was no context behind McQueary. Who knows about his credibility. He did say he witnessed a rape of a child and did what? I think a reasonable person doesn't tiptoe up to the coach with a meek (and apparently vague) accusation and instead introduces a 45 ILB plate to Mr Sandusky's skull. He would have been fully justified. All in all, there is a lot we don't know.

As for the NCAA, read Freeh's investigation, or lack thereof. Talk about mailing it in. The whole thing hinges on the interpretation of an email, that assumes subject, actors, and situation. It's pathetic. Absolutely nothing was done, except a regurgitation of what was probably on Yahoo. Really, the NCAA has nothing and probably is forced to back down simply to save some punishment and keep from being sued.

This is a fine example of the kind of quality opinion that can be derived by actually being informed about an issue one comments on.

Coming from a guy who thinks Sandusky isn't guilty of rape.

You're really not the brightest bulb in the box, 0723. Sorry.

So you think the NCAA has little or nothing to go on, even though Sandusky was found guilty of seven counts of raping children and other abuses, some of which was willfully covered up or ignored by Penn St. You think we shouldn't punish the guilty because it causes collateral damage to innocent people? Don't we convict individuals everyday for crimes even without giving a thought to how the innocent people in that person's life will be harmed? What is the point of punishing anyone if someone else will always suffer from the punishment? Do you even think about these things?

Or is your entire argent based on the McQueary incident? Even if this incident didn't occur you realize he was concivcted of other child sex crimes that happened at Penn St., right? So it is a proven fact that he abused children on school grounds, and you believe there is nothing there.

You clearly don't know the actual facts, and you call other people dim. I pity you.
