This whole scandal is beyong mind-boggling and it is certain more sordid details are going to come out. The impact on the community and entire University is going to be huge. Now that it appears that Penn State is going to clean house moving forward, I wonder what is going to happen to them from a football program prospective. This certainly sets up for the Wisconsin to be the Big Dog in the Big Ten East. OSU is likely to go on sanctions and PSU undoubtedly will suffer for a long time from this fallout of this awful situation.

I wonder if Al Golden will be the next coach. Many thought he was waiting for this job anyway prior to Miami. Now that Miami got hit by their scandal, it is an easy out for Golden there.

The whole story is so sick, I just am numb from discussing the horrible details of it and what should have been done. I figured others may want to discuss potential football impact.

It could go one of two ways - the University could take a long look in the mirror and scale back the importance and significance they put on athletics (a real possibility IMO) or they could use the football program as a rallying point for the entire community and bring in an Urban Meyer type who can keep the program at a high level.

It will be interesting to see who bounces back quicker - PSU or OSU. Is the stigma of the horrific scandal in Happy Valley enough to turn boosters/fans/recruits away or will the sanctions and loss of scholarships in Columbus be more difficult to overcome?

Either way, yes, UW looks to be in a very good spot for sustained dominance.

Go Gophers!!

moving forward i would prefer the bigten invites pennstate to leave the bigten today. core values of institution over children are not the core values i'd like the bigten to ignore.

I disagree. Wisconsin? Dominant? They can't even beat Michigan State. And this year they lost to an OSU team that was in a shambles, with a true FR QB, and an offense that was incapable of the forward pass. If Chryst and Bostad (O-line coach) bail over the winter, things won't look that "Rose"-y in Madison in the very near future. Wisconsin, Iowa, and Michigan State are where they always will be; a step below Nebraska, Michigan, OSU, and Penn State.

The latest turn of events is just plain bad for the Big Ten though. Besides reflecting poorly on the conference, this only weakens the national image of the conference when some of the heavyweights are in dire straits. It's not good.

I do find it kind of interesting though that the two teams hit the hardest are two of the few teams the Gophers don't have on the schedule this year or next year.

I bet all the recruits run from Penn St. What a mess the football program will be - and a well deserving mess!

I feel they will need to hire a big respected name. They can't go with the unproven. Golden might be able to come in and do that, but they may not want anyone associated with the program's past. He was under Paterno for only one year though and he might be the most logical pick. Not getting the Big Name or Golden will set them back more.

Penn State FB is currently a money printing machine. They were the 2nd most profitable FB program in the nation, behind Texas. This is going to hurt financially, big time. In addition to the lost revenue they will see directly from FB, they are going to get hurt substantially in fund raising and donations. Joe Pa was less coach and more fund raising tool the past years. They would trot him out for donors and benefits and start collecting the cash. Who wants to donate to an institution that covers up for pedophiles?
This is going to have a devastating effect that will be felt for a generation.

The implications of this for Penn State just go on and on and on. It is basically a sure thing that at lease SOME football recruits and SOME donors will rethink their committments to Penn State. I wouldn't be surprised, though, if it hurts more mundane things like school applications, ability to recruit professors, other sports, etc.. This is an absolute nightmare for the school.

We may see a lot of Penn State players transferring out. It is still too early to say whether or not their recruits will change their minds, a lot depends on how big this scandal gets, it may be the tip of the iceberg. And then there are the boosters, will they close up their wallets? Penn State needs do some radical house cleaning, and establish some solid systems for ethics.

No big name coach will step into that dumpster fire. Recruiting will be hurt for a long time. Heck, I bet less regular students will apply next year. How would You like to be a PSU alum right now? Time to peel off bumper stickers and take down the yard flags. Ouch!

Penn State will survive this horrible situation. PSU will search it's institutional soul and will rise like the strong institution it is. PSU football will display a humble, human, contrite and appropriate apology for any and all sins by commission and omission. IF you really think about things, this will give PSU a chance to make itself better, stronger and more committed to "doing the RIGHT thing. PSU will remain a member of the Big Ten Conference and will help every other member of the Big Ten Conference to evaluate itself, be honest with what it finds and a chance to begin to make ammends. IF people think these types of problms only exist at PSU, they are missing the larger, more tragic picture. PSU has a human nature and the good people at PSU will work extremely hard to dedicate it's future to rise above this damning tragic situation. The Football Program at PSU will remain a very solid, Big Ten Level Program. This is a spiritual, ethical, deeply personal wound to the reputation of PSU as an institution...but...the institution will seek to honestly and sincerely and humbly heal itself. Every institution in America has received a call to search it's own house very closely, carefully and honestly to insure that things like this do not happen in their own back yard.
PSU has the spirit and the soul to learn and improve and to try to find ways to make ammends. They will pay what ever price they have to pay...and they will not only survive, but willbe strong...first as an institution and also as a football program.

Ohio State will remain a football power. They will not miss too many beats. The University of Michigan will remain their incentive to return to a highly competetive level very quickly. They will need to closely scrutinize their players "off the field" activities and relationships within the greater Columbus Community. They will need to help pave the way for limiting "booster" access to players and players access to boosters. This was a real wake up call for THE Ohio State...but...it is something all Big Ten Programs need to learn from. OSU will NOT fall off the cliff on the football front. They will NOT just quietly go away. They were...they will be...they still ARE a giant in the college football world.

Just recall, we are not that far removed from the haskin's academic cheating scandal. Stuff happens. Sometimes it is horrible stuff. But, Institutions can and do learn, make changes and SURVIVE. There is a kind of collective conscience within the institution that will seek to do the things that must be done to insure that institution will make the ammends, apologize, learn, make their process a healing process and to rededicate their committment so that the greater good can be served and what the institution has to offer society in the future will be good and positive.

PSU will contribute on many levels to the greater good for a LONG time to come. PSU football will survive. OSU football will survive.

Just as the U of M has remained a charter member of the Big Ten Conference even after the shocking haskin's acadmeic scandal and will make many positive contributions as a member of the Big Ten Conference...so will PSU and OSU.

Right now, the football aspect of membership in the Big Ten doesn't seem very important compared to academic cheating scandals at Minnesota, rampant boosterism problems at OSU or the tragic events surfacing at PSU. Yet, the Big Ten will work with it's member schools as they clean their houses and those member schools facing some problems now will continue to be a strong part of the alliance with the other Big Ten Institutions.

No one program is going to benefit from this tragedy. Nor from the mess with the rampant boosterism at OSU. The balance of power in that division will maybe shift "on paper" for a year or two...but...PSU and OSU will NOT just go away the way some of you appear to want them to "go away..." These things are not quite as black and white...cut and dried...done deals as some of you may think.

Good luck to us all. The "HUMAN CONDITION" is a condition all men, women and institutions suffer from AND eventually work to improve and finally benefit from having "fought the good fight..." for. May good things be provided for those who have suffered. May justice and compassion provide healing where healing is needed. This is, indeed a very sad and sobering day.

Why should anyone be interested in apologies? Actions are what matter. Why should I assume that an organization which acted without honor will now decide to act honorably? Lets wait and see what they will do, and see whether it will be good enough.

Yes, we had the Clem Haskins scandal, but that was a drop in the bucket. The cover up at Penn State is far worse. Not in terms of NCAA sanctions, but still far worse. Gophers basketball was in a deep ditch after this scandal, and still hasn't recovered to where it was before the scandal broke. Penn State is going to have a very rough road ahead of them, and if the cover up is even deeper, then Penn State is going to be in an even deeper hole.

His retirement in 1999 at the age of 55 seems a little unusual. If he was asked to quietly retire because of child molestation allegations, this blows wide open, especially after he was still allowed to bring children to the facilities. No, you can't say "this happens everywhere". A scandal of this scandal doesn't happen everywhere.

i doubt this "gift" is done giving to psu. fearing a gloria allred presser. it would be odd if all the incidents are on the table already

You're under-estimating the sordid nature of this, and the fact that the nature of the story makes this FAR bigger than just an athletic scandal.

99% of the population didn't give a rip about the Gophers cheating scandal. If you asked 99% of U.S. citizens what happened to the Gophers basketball program in the late 90's they would give you a blank stare.

In ten years, that will NOT be the case with the Penn State scandal. You will be able to ask grandmothers in Kansas about the Penn State scandal and they will immediately know what you are talking about.

There are no NCAA infractions involved, so there will be no long term hits outside of this PR disaster. If all of the coaches and administrators are gone, PSU can start quickly with a fresh slate. It's still a great school in a beautiful setting with great fans and proud alumni. Fresh blood won't repeat the mistakes of the previous group. Clean house, move on.

Do not underestimate the PR disaster that this is. That they are going to have to clean house means a rough transition. People are going to hear about this scandal for decades. It is one of the biggest scandals in college history right now. If it gets any worse, it will be the biggest by far. Some colleges can weather storms, because they practically recruit themselves. We don't know how deeply or how for how long a time Penn State's reputation will suffer.

This situation calls for a Jeffrey Anderson presser. On Barreiro, Anderson said some State College parents have already contacted him.

Kind of disgusting in a way that the students are supporting Paterno. I believe they will rise faster than we suspect and football player wills still go there if they get the right coach and no penalities of any sort. The key is going to be who is hired etc.

The big winner in this might be Urban Meyer.

A bidding war between OSU & PSU, my oh my.

If You are a high school senior right now, would you want a PSU degree on your wall for the rest of your life? SMU still has not recovered 30 years after a far less severe infraction. PSU will now run the "program" not football running the "school".

I've heard first hand that collateral sports are already being affected at PSU, not just football. Kids are cancelling recruiting meetings. Too much baggage to have pride in PSU right now, so it will have a ripple effect in many programs. Since people in Happy Valley greet the track and field coaches by first name, given how in love with all PSU sports they are, this will be far more devastating to the program long term than what has happened at OSU.

How can you just move forward having looked the other way for over 20 years to a serial pedophile. The School will carry this for decades, they are the not only the current poster boy for abuse of minors. There are the heinous crimes Sandusky allegedly committed dating back to 1992, but those from Graham B. Spanier, to Tim Curley and Gary Schultz, Mike McQuerry, and Joe Patterno not only covered it up but failed to report a felony. The did nothing. How any of these individuals could look the other way for at least 10 years is criminal. In fact failure to report child abuse is a misdemeanor which can be upgraded to a felony based on the level of abuse. This is not cheating, or a bondfire gone bad, not a tattoo deal, not a rouge booster, not paying for players, or arranging houses and cars. No, this truly is beyond a Lack of Institutional Control. This is Institutional Cowardice, its shamefull behavior, these men should be charged with felony failure to report.

The sanctions against SMU have been long gone, but they still languish. They won national titles in 1981 and 1982. Does anyone talk about them when they talk about conference expansion? They went 25 years without a bowl game. It wasn't the sanctions that did that.

Penn State will be just fine. Kids are going to want to go there because they will play in front of 100,000 and will have a chance to win the Big Ten. This country's memory has proven time and again to be extremely short. People won't even talk about this thing in an alarmingly short period of time. The news cycle moves too fast, and people will lose interest. Remember when people really cared about steroids in baseball? Now, people are just sick of hearing about it.

The coach who takes this job will not be entering a mess because he will have an entirely new staff, an entirely new administration, and no loss of scholarships. All that will be left is the treasure-trove of talent, fertile recruiting grounds, and a fan base looking to move on and embrace a winner.

The morality warriors among us might want them to stay down, but they will be just fine. You might find it sad, but it is true.

It is not that the public's memory is short, the public has a selective memory. You are seriously comparing this scandal to steroids in baseball? Seriously? Comparing covering up child molestation to steroids? The recruits can go elsewhere and play in front of huge crowds. People will be talking about this scandal for decades. The world changes. People keep assuming that things will always be the same as they are today. Dynasties rise, and dynasties fall. Penn State needs to handle this right, or they will fall.

Well, I guess that Penn State is doomed now. Just the way Germany was doomed after exterminating 6 million people.

Men and women do HORRIBLE things. There will be many trials. There will be punishments. There will be many cable tv news pieces. The self-righteous will condemn. There will be fire and brimstone demands for a death penalty for the institution. In the end, just as Germany survived, PSU will survive. PSU will continue to be. Hopefully, it will be forever changed in some ways. But, Institutions...just as nations do survive.

Certainly our own nation has many incidents that have impacted the lives of millions of citizens and others who got in the way of the goals of some individuals who ran some of the various institutions that make up our government. Yet, those institutions have survived, prospered, grown and have managed to make probably many more positive contributions to society, the well-being of the citizens, friends, neighbors of this country.

Sometimes there are massive, horrible, terrible and unthinkable actions, screw-ups, cover-ups and acts that are far less than courageous that have been carried out by our nation/institutions/corporations/Government Agencies/Military. People's heads may roll. But, in the long run, the institutions survive and prosper and move on. Individuals fail. Institutions survive in spite of human failures.

We should all feel the failure that has happened at State College, PA. We should all search our souls. We should all look for injustices that we can interviene upon. We should all try to make this a better, safer place to live, work and make our way through life. There is tragedy, suffering and violence in the communities each of us inhabit. Heed the lessons of PSU and do something about some of the problems around us. Terrible things are happening every day.

PSU will receive plenty of richly deserved criticism. PSU will also survive. New people will replace the guilty people. Life will go on. Life MUST go on. We must each do what we can to help others around us who are in need of help. We must each do the best we can do...

Best comment, "going forward, the school will be running the fb program. The fb program will not be running the school. "
It wasn't just sanctions that crippled SMU for 30 years. It was the trustees saying they weren't going to ever have another scandle that embarrassed the university.

Dude, are you running for office or something?

...because if so I can suggest some MUCH better topics to practice self-important over-dramatic speeches on.
