People watch the Vikings because the Vikings win lots of games and give the fans hope for more. The Gophers do not win lots of Big Ten games most years. The fans have little hope because the standard here is not just to beat out three other teams. Even when we win five Big Ten games even many Gopher fans consider the year to be a big, huge disappointment. The NFL is just a much, much better business model to maintain fan interest. I do not watch the NFL, but their business model works far better for the Vikings than the Big Ten business model works for Gopher fans. We Gopher fans get damn, damn little for our money.

The NFL is on broadcast TV and is heavily promoted. If you watch broadcast TV, you'll see promos for the upcoming game all week long. Drive down the street, you'll see banners with the Vikings logo trying to entice people coming to watch the game in the bar. The NFL has had many years of everyone being able to watch the games on TV while few could watch the Gophers on TV.

These bars would hang up a Gophers banner if they thought that Gopher fans would come to the bar to watch the game. Maybe there ought to be more gathering in bars to watch games rather than watching it on the couch. It would make people realize there are more Gopher fans than they thought.
