Outlook

Guys, I'm going to come in here and accuse you of not taking your opponents seriously, tell you that you don't pay attention to football other than your conference and basically tell you that you don't know anything about football. Wait, you think I'm arrogant? What on earth!!!! I'm just talking football!

NDSU ain't doodly squat!
Eedy beedy friggen puffs of wind...
Little piss ant state, little piss ant football team, from a little piss ant conference, with little piss ant aspirations.
The Gophers are gonna wipe the floor with your wooly beefalo hides.
Any questions?
Didn't think so...

It's Gonna Be A Long Week On "The Hole"

A longer one for that segment of "Goldy Nation" actually living in the F-M area.

I've said it a million times before: there is not one possible outcome in a game with the Buffaloes (in the eyes of non-Gopher fans, that is) that is good for the Golden Gophers.

Not one.

Hey, I saw the game. You caught NMSU on a really good day, and I mean that in all honesty. But you will really be kicking yourself about that loss later in the year. Maybe I"m wrong and they will have a winning season. I really liked what I saw from their coach and their team. but then they went out an lost to UTEP last week, so the jury is out.

The bison have played a few MAC teams over the years, and had good success. I won't say any more than that, lest I have a big ego. I think the bison could give Miami a good game, but that's just my opinion, you do not need to agree with it.

Well, I don't know think we'll be beating ourselves up too much about it only because it will probably be the difference between 3 and 4 losses, so really, we lost nothing except the game (which sucks, but won't have any impact on later in the season).

As far as the MAC goes, I realize, you came on here to tell us that we don't watch anything except D1 or pay attention to it, yet you admit that you have an ego when it comes to MAC schools. It's exactly why people get annoyed with Bison fans.

Yes, even Bisonville has its share of disturbed posters. The state of ND will show up in full force, with lots of pride in its football team. And you can be sure that ND fans will be fully respectful of gopher fans. We will be rooting for a gopher win the week after our game.

Yep, which is why they shouldn't be on the schedule in the future.

The MAC isn't a very good conference, it would probably serve them better to be FCS. The best team in the MAC each year is gonna have a tough time beating the top 10 of FCS. Also, when most Bison fans think of the MAC they think of our wins vs Ball state and Central Michigan. Central Michigan won the MAC in 07 and we went there and beat them by 30 points. It was 4 years ago, but its the impression of the MAC conference that bison fans remember

When comparing FBS to FCS schools:

1. The top 10 in FCS will play the bottom teams of the major conferences close and pull out an occasionl win. This year for example UNI lost by 1 to Iowa State, EWU lost to Washington by 1, last year we beat Kansas 6-3. A person could probably look at the standings at the end of the year, take the bottom 2 or 3 teams in each major conference and if those teams played the better FCS teams the game was probably decided by a touchdown or less.

2. If a top 10 FCS plays a MAC, WAC, Sunbelt, etc team, the FCS team has a good chance of getting a W. There a exceptions like Boise st and others where the FCS doesn't have a chance.

Yep, which is why they shouldn't be on the schedule in the future.

+1000 and exactly.

2 events will soon make the Dakota-directional games a memory.

Maturi (God willing and benevolent) will be a former AD soon, and the BIG is likely, if not certainly, going to a 9-game conference schedule.

What I think doesn't really matter. The facts are that the MO Valley has had a good share of success vs. the MAC in football, including success by Kill's team at S.IL. They play some good football in the MAC, but so does the Valley. How do you think Kill got the job at N.IL?

Dude, we are both DI. I was suggesting that most gopher fans do not have much knowledge of DI FCS, but I could be wrong.

We're not students of the game like Herd fans.

I find myself checking on Duluth, Mankato, and SC games, schedules and scores. That's OK as a FCS fan, but would be a foul for a BCS school. :D Seriously, I'm sure there are lots of gopher fans that follow the Bulldog and Johnnies success.

Do gopher fans even know what the primary difference is between the FBS and FCS levels?

Full disclosure; I got my undergrad at NDSU.

That being said, there's nobody cheering for a Bison stomping more than myself this weekend. Bison fans are some of the most arrogant and ignorant that I have ever come across (and I lived in Lincoln during the mid-90's). After getting my degree, I couldn't leave F-M fast enough.

Yes, they have a solid program up there, no doubt about it.

Why I'm optimistic for a positive outcome Saturday for Gophers fans? While NDSU has a nice program, they can't come close to slinging it like the first three opponents the Gophers have played, even NMSU. They'll come in, play sound, fundamental football, but for the most part will try to run the football. They'll have to throw it for 250+ to be successful Saturday because I actually DO think the Gophers will be tough against the run game.

Of course, the "X" factor is if the Gophers turn it over 2-3 times to level the playing field. Bottom line, again, NDSU is a really good team but they don't have the passing game or the speed at the skill positions that the Gophers have faced so far (yes, even NMSU at least had speed at the skill positions).

That post was a good alternative to blowing a gasket. I call that progress.

As much as I hate to admit it, MN Herd is completely right. I will easily put us as the underdog going into this game, especially since about half of the stadium if not more will be Bison fans. There's a reason that the game sold out so fast, and it wasn't because Gopher fans bought tickets. Does anyone remember the dome in 07? AT LEAST half of the dome was Bison fans. I think this is the 2nd best team we will have played this year, behind USC of course. I would bet money that NDSU would put a whooping on NMSU and could probably beat Miami (OH). I am a diehard Gophs fan, but I know that our team will come in flat because frankly the players dont give a hoot about playing NDSU. NDSU's players on the other hand are going to play the hardest that they'll play all year. I would set us as 10 point underdogs this Saturday night, but I hope our team can prove me wrong.

Durrr.... one letter of the alphabet?

But seriously, yes. FCS has a 16 team playoff to determine champion and FCS teams can only have 63 players receiving financial assistance.

Sort of . . . at the FBS-85 level, all rides must be fulls, but at the FCS level partials are allowed. Therefore, more than 63 athletes could receive assistance, but the total of all scholarships cannot total more than 63.

I think everyone knows the championship differences, but last year the FCS Playoff went from 16 to 20 teams.

This has been a fun thread to read through. Quite an education and I'm guessing those friendly fans from the great college football think tank of the Red River Valley will be here all week to "help" us further. Wishing us well in the B1G season after calling us idiots is just a classy courtesy everyone should consider.

Quite frankly, I'm embarrassed I know as much as I do about FCS. I'm guessing MN fans know far more about FCS compared to fans from Oklahoma, Ohio State, and Alabama. Forgive me if I'm NOT proud of that. In fact, I'd like nothing better than to forget my FCS knowledge and literally kill the last 7 brain cells that contain any FCS data doing a shot to toast a Gopher BCS bowl victory some day.

Friendly and intelligent! I must say, this praise is too kind . . . Too kind. If i was there I'd pour you a double and clear your head of this FCS thing once and for all! You gopher fans have to be the most polite that I have encountered, on par with the Wisconsin fans.

the BIG is likely, if not certainly, going to a 9-game conference schedule

If anything, this will make the DI-AA games more likely to stay than ever. The USD/SDSU/NDSU/East Delaware Culinary Institute games will not be the ones going away; the USC/UNC/Syracuse/Oregon St.-type games are the ones that will. The Gophers going forward will rarely, if ever, play a BCS opponent in the non-conference. Making us play 9 in-conference is ridiculous enough.

I got my undergrad at NDSU.

We can't be friends anymore.

With all points aside this game concerns me big time. NDSU and it's fans will be jacked and Kill had better have our Gophers ready to play. We saw what happened in 2007 and I am not quite sure that this Gopher team is that much better than the 2007 squad (not yet anyway).

From the beginning of this season I have wanted this game BAD. To add to that I was camping up near Pelican Rapids a month ago, and as I got into my car to drive away (wearing my Gopher Football T-shirt) a smart ass college aged girl wearing a NDSU t-shirt yells "Gophers SUCK".

I'll be happy with a 1 point win but man I would love it if the Gophers just stick it to the Bison. Then that little snitch take stick it were the sun doesn't shine !!!

Dude, we are both DI. I was suggesting that most gopher fans do not have much knowledge of DI FCS, but I could be wrong.

Well, I'm going to go with "Your favorite team plays the kind of D1 football that has two A's at the end". The FBS/FCS stuff was just PC nonsense created so fans like this guy could thump their chests some more.

Yes, even Bisonville has its share of disturbed posters.
I see you also own a mirror. I bet your hair looks awesome!

Are you sure that wasn't a UND chick wearing a UND shirt? Most NDSU female students likely did not even know we were playing you guys this year until just recently, as in last week perhaps. That comment, to me, has UND and its Butthockey team written all over it!!

Yeah, although MN Herd's tenor is annoying, I err on the side of caution even where FCS teams are concerned. I don't know how anyone could have been a fan of this team for the last 4 years and NOT err on the side of caution. I also urged restraint in making gaudy predictions prior to the NMSU game.

I think it's a game we CAN win. Seeing what I've seen, I don't see how one can make the prediction that we WILL win.

ANY of us Gopher Fans who have not learned a bit of humility...a lot of respect and..

a more quiet approach headed in to a game with NDSU, SDSU and SD is only trying to "act as if..." we are "superior" to anyone just because the Gophers are a member of the Big Ten Conference. Just take a look at our last 4 games with these teams...2 with NDSU, 1 with SDSU and 1 with SD. We are 2-2 in these last 4 games and were fortunate to have won the 2 that we did win.

Yes, I think the Gophers can win this game. Yes, I will be cheering for the Gophers to win this game.

BUT: I have a LOT of respect for this team from Fargo that will be coming into TCF BANK STADIUM on Saturday evening. I will be respectful of the NDSU Fans that will be visiting our stadium. Should the Gophers win this game, I will look at it as a good win and one that the Gopher Program really does NEED to win.

We aren't so much. We have a LONG way to go. Our Gophers will have to play their best game to date to win this game.

When I first saw the schedule, I circled this game and felt very strongly that this game with NDSU was a MUST WIN game for Coach Kill and the Golden Gophers. I felt it was THE most important of the OOC games on the schedule this year. Yes, it IS a statement game for the Gopher Football Program. The last 2 times out against this NDSU team, the Gophers barely won a game that they probably did not really deserve to win on a blocked field goal. The last time NDSU whipped the Gophers on the scoreboard in a game that was not nearly as close as the scoreboard indicated. Then came the close, win over SDSU and then the loss to SD just last season.

It is time for the U of M Golden Gophers to show up for this game and play Big Ten level football against a very good NDSU team that will show up to play on Saturday. The stadium will be filled. This game has much more meaning for the Golden Gopher Football Program than any of us probably want to admit.

So, be humble. Be polite to our visitors. Be respectful of this team that has proved to be a very tough competetor and a very good football program. Show NDSU the ultimate respect and be ready to play GOOD, SOUND football! Know that they will be ready to play Gophers. Be ready to play a very good football team.

Good luck. May there be no injuries. May the better team win!
