Other Big Names

Since I left Minneapolis, I've lived in San Antonio, Miami, Salt Lake and LA..All great Basketball towns...I can't tell you without a shadow of a doubt that Flip Saunders would not be considered a splash in any of the cities I've lived in. People know the name but nobody outside of Minnesota has much respect for him. People think of him as the guy who happened to be coachign KG in Minnesota all those years.

Exactly!

What about Bruce Pearl?

Damaged goods because of his actions at Tennessee?

I'd thought about that one. I can't say I'd be against having him, even with how his tenure at Tennessee ended.

Just hire Flip and get it over with. Have you ever heard him on the radio with Dan B. or on ESPN. He has national recognition and is pretty good when it comes to schmoozing with folks. I think his connection to the pros will bring a lot of kids who have those kind of aspirations to the U. Just my opinion as if it counts.

Boeheim would be Tubby but better results. He might want out with the allegations and the break-up if Big East. I give it a 5% chance.

5% chance of Boeheim as our next coach? Lol.

I'll give it a .000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000005% chance.

Barnes is awful! I can tell you from my time in San Antonio he is a dirty coach....I'm sure Teague knows him from the days when Barnes was at Clemson...

The last time MN had a dirty coach we made it to the final four. hmmmmm

If we want shady, let's hire Scott Drew from Baylor.

Painter is actually a very good coach but he is increasingly squeezed by the perils of trying to recruit with major programs all around him. Making matters worse for Painter is the arrival of Butler onto the scene as an increasingly dangerous foe when it comes the Indy talent...Especially now that Butler will be playing in the BigEast and getting major airtime on ESPN.

I actually think Painter would be a good hire for the Bruins.

The way I saw their list was as follows:

1)Shaka
2)Donovan
3)Pitino
4)Stevens
5)Painter/Gottfriend/Romar/Enfield

Well I don't see any of those top 3 taking it...can't see Stevens either. Guess of those other 4 listed, Painter would definitely be the guy.

If you have been paying attention to other coaching changes you know it will not be Brad Stevens.

Mathew Graves was just hired as South Alabama's new coach. He was the Butler associate coach and was tabbed as Stevens replacement after the first final four run. Butler only hires from within, so he would not have left Butler for South Alabama if there was any chance of Stevens leaving.

This is what I was wandering, how big a part does it play with recruits.

I think it is overblown, unless basketball players are dramatically different than football players. There have been plenty of former NFL coaches that have struggled at the college game.

Not sure how NBA coaching experience would matter to recruits - do we think Izzo, Coach K, Calipari, etc don't have guys they've developed for the NBA? Only about a billion of them.

Make Glen Mason the new AD-- fire and make Tea-lips pay the 2.5 million due Tubby-- and then hire Tubby back if he will have us

I think we found the winner of the "game changing big name" (ha!!) - per Shooter:

Ex-Timberwolves shooting guard Anthony Peeler, 43, who is an assistant men's basketball coach at Virginia Union, said Wednesday he has applied for the Gophers' head coaching job.

Go Gophers!!

He obviously won't get the job but I admire him for getting his name out there. I imagine this isn't the only opening he's applied for.

Something tells me Jon isn't your only username on GH.

Quite random, but I had a dream last night that there was an announcement who our next head coach was.

And it was..

Tom Hanks.

No clue where that came from.

Here's a name that I don't believe has been mentioned....Tad Boyle at Colorado. The guy turned around what I'd call the black hole of college hoops at Colorado. He's done a great job of recruiting at CU on a shoe string budget. The school is in horrible financial shape after the payout to leave the Big 12 and can't afford to pay him what he's worth on the open market. I've heard UCLA has been after him. He's a Colorado native, but played basketball at Kansas.

John Calapari. Go big or go home.

Does Teague have a previous relationship with Stevens? It just seems like that is such a huge stretch? Shaka obviously made some sense, but Stevens?
Yes, they know each other and their relationship is good. More importantly, you just added someone from the Butler family that has been with Brad from the start and is very close to him.

As for Buzz, he's waiting to fill Rick Barnes' shoes as soon as soon as the job opens up so he's not trading Milwaukee to Minneapolis. There's an outside shot there because he and Larry Williams don't get along, but I doubt he puts himself in a position miss out on returning home.

Quick note on Stevens and new Gophers Senior Associate AD Beth Goetz from Jeff Goodman:

Brad Stevens is a stickler for the rulebook.

He has his compliance director, Beth Goetz, on speed dial and wouldn't even comment about a committed recruit in a deserted parking lot last summer in Las Vegas.

However, one rule needs to be broken with regards to the Bulldogs' 34-year-old coach.

They need to put him in the Hall of Fame.

Now.

Let’s waive the Hall of Fame’s protocol of 25 active years or five years in retirement and just send Opie Taylor, I mean Stevens, to Springfield, Mass., immediately.

Why waste time?

Stevens has already earned it among the game’s greats.

Yes, after just four years.

At least he could probably act like he knew what he was doing.
