Other B1G Conference Games 2024-25

Michigan will a complete beatdown of Maryland 27-6 first quarter. Maryland cut it to 4 at half, but now 30. Michigan got their first 3 McDonald's All-American ever and they are balling to start the tournament. Olson and Swords with 42.

Watkins with 31 and 10 in 5 point win over Indiana. Michigan and USC should be a good one.

But ya know in WBB ya just need a couple of good ones, and it's a whole new ball game. I hope Coach P can reel a couple in. Go Gophers!

The legacy BIG teams got pummeled again this season by stacked newcomers. When Maryland joined the league in 2015, Maryland went 18-0 in the regular season, and then 3-0 in the Big Ten Tourney. Iowa finished a distant second in 2015 at 14-4. This year, USC and UCLA went a combined 31-1 (including the Northwestern forfeits) against holdover BIG teams in the regular season and Big Ten Tourney. OSU and Maryland finished a distant 3rd at 13-5. Hoping for better next year from the the legacy BIG schools.

So, the legacy BIG teams will also adjust to the inclusion of west coast teams like we did for Maryland?

Hope so, but I thought (hoped?) the situations were different. When Maryland joined the BIG in 2015, after making the Final Four in 2014, BIG WBB was a decidedly 2nd-tier conference. From 2010-2014, the BIG had only 4 Sweet 16 teams (less than 1 a year and never more than 1 in a single year), and 0 Elite Eight teams, let alone a Final Four team.

The last 4 years (there was no tournament in 2020), the BIG had 13 Sweet 16 teams, 6 Elite Eight teams and 2 Final Four appearances. This year, holdover BIG teams will be lucky to have 1 team host (if OSU can hang on), which makes getting to the Sweet 16 an uphill challenge. Still think/hope a few holdover BIG teams will get to the Sweet 16. Otherwise, the holdover BIG members will collectively have taken a bigger step back this season than I would have imagined. I knew losing Mackenzie Holmes and Caitlin Clark were huge losses for the BIG, but thought 1 or 2 holdover teams could surprise big time. That didn't really happen, except perhaps Michigan being a fringe top 25 freshmen-led team.
