OSU Postgame Thread

1. F the refs- There were probably 3 PI's that were uncalled on tOSU defenders that were more egregious than the one actually called on T-time. To not get either targeting was absolutely brutal with the second one being one of the more clear cut examples of helmet to helmet you will see.

2. The Conner Olson penalty changed the game. Gophers were up 4 with good field position and momentum and Olson decides to push a guy. The Dunlap hold on the next play set us back another 10 and the typical give up on 3rd down had us punting from bad field position for the first time all game. tOSU scores immediately to take the lead and we'd be down 2 scores soon after

3. That soon after was the scoop and score. It would be nice if Tanner ever felt pressure or at least didn't give up the strip sack. This particular one would have been almost impossible to prevent as Morgan. To make matters worse, Morgan was in the process of throwing to a wide open receiver. Game of inches there.

4. Tanner could have had 3 or 4 picks in this game. The Gophers had two huge breaks in this game with Tanner throwing the pick getting called back for the hit to his helmet (correct call but pass would be picked either way) and Stroud missing behind an open receiver that ended up a Gophers interception. Going in to half, the drop by Wright followed by Tanner missing Jackson for what would have been a TD was brutal.

5. 29 carries for anyone through 3 quarters is way too many especially in game 1 against one of the 3 best programs in the nation.

6. Joe Rossi better get this fixed...NOW. The first TD for Ohio State looked exactly like a number of the untouched long runs they gave up last year. Concerning that nobody could catch that tOSU runner either as he wasn't exactly a burner. Giving up a TD immediately out of half, giving up the big play TD right after tOSU took over at around the 45. Literally every possession in the 2nd half was a worst case scenario for our team as our defense looked completely unprepared to stop anything. The Dline did not provide the pressure that many suggested it would. This type of effort on defense is going to give up 35 to just about anyone on the schedule.

7. Overall, this was a much better performance than our last 3 featured games at home after the win against Penn State. Hopefully it was good enough to keep people engaged with the program and hopefully there will be another chance in late November to get a very significant win at home that leads to Indy..and they get the job done this time. The Gophers will only get so many chances at these featured games, and they have to start capitalizing. Programs where the Gophers are either move up in the pecking order or they get passed by those behind them who make changes...they don't stay in the same place.

8. PJ Fleck has to change his best. The early focus was on the gutsy 4th and 1 call, but what the F was the 3rd and 4 (long 3?) call that preceded that? You are down 10-0 at home and run a wildcat formation run against one of the most athletically dominant teams in college football? Horrific. We hadn't stopped Ohio State at all to that point and it was ball game if we had to punt there. Even more disappointing was this sequence down 10 in the 4th quarter: 1st and 15 from the tOSU 34: RUN for 2 yards. 2nd and 13 from the tOSU 32 RUN for 3 yards. 3rd and 10 from tOSU 29 run the clock all the way down, use a timeout. Come out and RUN AGAIN for 1 yard. You are playing the #4 team in the country and have a shot at a program changing win. The first two calls are indefensible. The run on third down AFTER WASTING A TIMEOUT was somehow beyond that. The disturbing thing is we've seen this from PJ before. In big games (see Wisconsin 2019). We are simply never going to get over the hump leaving opportunities on the field like this. Going further IF Mo is out, you have to think his overuse played a role in the injury. We refused to let Tanner throw the football. The team showed, once Mo went out, that they were capable of moving the ball through the air with some nice throws from Morgan to Jackson, Brown-Stephens, and Spann-Ford. If that happened earlier in the game, maybe things go differently. Obviously the defense is the primary concern relative to this one game, but for the big picture PJ can't keep leaving opportunites on the field because he's afraid something bad will happen. Something bad is happening with the decisions he's making.

Defense was slow and out of position all second half ...I saw little improvement from last year...That doesn't concern you?
8 yards per carry

13 completed passes for 294 yards and 4 tds

That's fu----g hideous!

That's with a home crowd cheering and on their feet for a good share of the game.

That's about 22 yards per pass completion.

this defense blows

Hey Gophers - not trolling, I thought your team looked good! Some bad calls and one ridiculous call. Might not have changed the outcome, but it was sooo bad! I always cheer for the underdog (see my handle) so I wanted you guys to win. As great as a win would have been, it is only one game. Best of luck, except against us 😉

Key stat of game. Yards per play. Our 408 yards of offense is good against OSU. Especially with CAB out and Mo’s injury. But OSU’s average if 10+ yards per play on offense is where the talent differential really shows. One blown defensive assignment and a touchdown is almost automatic. So many explosive plays for OSU. Hope we have some explosive plays in our book as the year wears on. With our defense, a grind-it-out offense isn’t going to get us past 6 or 7 wins.

All we heard from the media and PJ was how improved the front 7 was....They got blown off the ball, got no pressure on a freshman QB and the linebackers didnt make a play all game....Corners played ok but the safeties are the worst I have seen in the 30 plus years I have been a gopher fan.

What I find ironic is that Rossi got the job because his predecessor's defense gave up a ridiculous amount of big plays. Rossi replaced him and with the exact same players his defense was seriously improved.

Lately, Rossi's defense has been giving up the same big plays. I am not saying a switch should happen after this one game against a loaded OSU team, but clearly this should not be happening against anyone else on our schedule.

EG,

I'm going to add a number 9.........I just didn't get giving it up at midfield with 30 seconds to go. Morgan got sacked and it was third and long, but damn, you are at midfield. You have the stones to go for it on your own 29 on 4th down, yet at midfield you don't go with the clock all in your favor.

I hope Mo is ok. That's all I wish for now. It will be not be a super fun season for the team, the fans and him to miss the whole season. He will definitely play on Sundays. Over all we did well. TOP,YARDS looks good. Aside from some big mistakes from O-line and break down from D for big plays, the team did better than expected. Compare to what we have in past, it feels great to see that the team can play with anyone.

Giving up long sustained touchdown drives means your players are overmatched. Giving up long 50+ yard touchdowns means your coaches are overmatched.

Yeah, why not at least try the Hail Mary as time expires?

I know it’s been said a lot before but how many times can Siri-Marin be out of position
This I am tired of Sori-Marin being out of position and his gap being the cause of big plays. Between him and Calvin Swenson giving up huge plays, yes Ohio State is great but neither one of those guy's did a very good job of containment. Lack of foot speed has a lot to do with it.

I like seeing Fleck retain confidence at the presser. Still wish he’d say something about the targeting non-call, but he helps take you off of that cliff.
Nobody had the brains or guts to ask him. Just sheer stupidity.

There are almost never any good questions at press conferences. I do expect / wouldn't enjoy a 60 Minutes style confrontation....but the folks asking...I'm not sure they took any notes during the game even.

That referee ought to be ashamed of himself for not calling that targeting. The Big 10 should still review that play and suspend the Ohio State player. That was intent and blindside hit with the crown of the helmet. Our guy now likely has a concussion because of this play. The head referee should also be fined for blowing that targeting call.

100% post of that day.

three straight runs after 1st and 15 in OSU territory down ten is up there with punting from Wisconsin’s 37 yard line.

- I thought offensive staff did a good job for the majority of the night with game plan. Using 6-7 o lineman will overwhelm teams (although I’m not sure it fits any RBs style except Mo).
- Special Teams improved immensely. Kudos to Fleck for landing Trickett and making us look competent.
- Tanner played well for the most part I thought, good enough for us to win.
- show me Bucky or Ky because Wiley is just not a very good RB.
- Defense not being lined up correctly is beyond inexcusable. Cost us at least two TDs. MSM is supposed to be the leader, but he’s as lost as anyone out there.
- We haven’t recruited safety well enough and it shows. Needs to be a portal emphasis. Felt bad watching Swenson, who had a horrific game.
- Defense seemed to quit, which was disappointing. Little reason for optimism but that OSU offense is legit.

What's frustrating is that we appear to have the offense and kicking game to be really good.

But here we are again, watching defensive breakdowns happening all over the field. 2 of 5 OSU's TDs you can argue that they just beat us because their player was better. The other 3 had severe defensive flubs. You just can't do this and expect to win any kind of title. And this is is not a new problem.

All in all, apart from the Mo injury, I can’t complain about a ton from this game.

Defense definitely had some shortcomings, but I’m going to hold off on any panic with them for now. Any flaw will be exposed by OSU in a big way due to their talent. My main concern with them is the lack of pressure we saw on Stroud.

I was rather impressed with our offensive gameplan for the night. The mega-lineman set was pretty effective, and I like the new wildcat we’re running. It was reminiscent of how prepared we were for the Auburn game. However, I still think PJ gets way too deep inside his head regarding in-game decisions and adjustments. The 4th down was a great call, but it felt like he was otherwise relying on someone to just bust a big play rather than dialing something up like Day did.

Really really like Dylan Wright. He’s got all the looks of being the next man up in our stretch of WR success.

One questionable decision that no one really mentions is the 4th down at the end of the half. We were within hail mary distance (40 yards-ish), it was 4th down and the clock was on our side... meaning there would be no time left had we ran a hail mary play. But we just ran out the clock. Yeah, sure, play it safe right? But the chances of them scoring from their endzone is very very low. Our chances of scoring, or getting a penalty in our favor, was much higher.

For me, that is way behind running the ball three times from 1st and 15, down ten in the fourth quarter, and without Mo.

GOOD
  • KICKERS! Trickett was perfect, Kesich booming KO's, and Crawford 2 punts inside the 10.
  • Wright looks like the real deal at WR -- and it's badly needed. Great get in the portal.
  • Putting up 400 yards offense on OSU with balance. You're throwing deep balls, mixing in RPO, and running sets with EIGHT OL in the game.
  • Going for it on 4th down from your own 30 in the 2nd quarter? Ballsy. Some would argue they shouldn't have been in that spot with the stupid 3rd down call, but still...that was awesome.
  • Anyone bagging on Morgan is uninformed. Huge performance without his #1 WR. What a leader. This kid fits it into the tightest windows you'll see in CFB. Does he occasionally make a poor decision? Yeah, of course...but he's a tremendous QB.
BAD
  • OMG the pass rush was just non-existent. When they even sniffed Stroud he looked panicky. Generate any kind of consistent pressure and it's probably a different outcome.
  • The Howden injury. I know Mo's will take top billing (for good reason), but if Howden misses significant time it could hurt the team just as much. Safety is by far the thinnest group on the team as you saw last night with Swenson getting turned around constantly.
  • Olsen's stupid push after the whistle changed the entire game. Dumb, undisciplined penalty you don't normally see from PJ's teams.
UGLY
  • Mo's injury. Pray, people.
  • Non-call on targeting. Unconscionable to miss that, intentionally or unintentionally.
  • Missed assignments and lack of speed on defense. It's hard to watch.
