Opting out of bowl game

A lot has changed in 2 years. Coaches are even bolting before knowing if they are in the CFP.

Yeah, but that has more to do with early signing period than diminished importance of bowls. Bowls are about the same importance as they were 5 years ago.

they should move the signing period out of December to mid February.
they should make conference championship Saturday to the day after the national championship a dead period so that all the movement happens before signing day. Would be better for the kids and the coaches

They should be able to sign before senior year starts and then again in February. Have a July signing after all camps are done and then in February.

Football is a bit different though in that kids mature and blow up during senior year which is why they won't likely move early signing up.

They already have a February signing period, so they should just eliminate the early December signing period.

Plenty of HS seniors graduate early and enroll in college in January.

Perhaps making it much easier for coaches who are bolting programs to take their commits with them. At least if there is a December LOI, there is something in place at least making the player think twice about ditching the commitment and following the coach. Not a good scenario for either players or universities, but it adds insult to injury to have a whole swath of players ditch LOIs to follow the coach. Part of the game, yes, and we benefited, but having a yellow light or two in place might be helpful.

Tough for me to be upset by players opting out of Bowl games. The Gophers just opted out have having their Offensive Coordinator continue through December.

I'm not in favor of having a lame duck OC either, just saying it should go both ways IMO (for those that make that decision).
 






Moving the signing period back hurts teams like Minnesota. I believe PJ spoke at length on this.

As far as every one who is entering the draft, I disagree. I just think these guys have so much to lose. It's not just about devastating injuries, it's even about small injuries. The Senior Bowl is 1 month away and it could be the difference between millions of dollars for these guys who have already given their bodies, time, future health to the U of MN. If they want to play, I'd love to have them. If they opt out to focus on their future, I think it's too easy for me and a little selfish to judge them for opting out. I'd be shocked if their teammates would be let down by them opting out.

I think once your team looks like it will not be a CFP selection or have a winning season and nice bowl bid, opt out the rest of the season even if its game 5. Hell some guys could opt out 3 games in. Its a great life lesson to quit on your team and yourself. There is no opting out in the NFL when things are going bad or your contract is coming due.

You get a get a paycheck in the NFL though.
 

Why even have a National Signing Day? Lots of athletes want the recruiting process over and done with by the time their senior year starts.

What possible reason is there to NOT let an athlete sign a letter of intent at any point after their junior year concludes? It would certainly help programs like Minnesota which try to identify developmental talent early.

Injuries I guess? Schools might not want to honor a scholarship if a player gets injured as bad as it sounds.

If they are risking millions of dollars it's stupid not to opt out. Would you keep working in your job for zero extra pay with a sizable risk of losing your next job that pays 10x your current job? No you wouldn't.
 

Does Mike Leach have to hold all his press conferences under a freeway overpass, or just this one?

Wow great news. Who would think we’d see fewer opt outs for the guaranteed hate bowl than we had for the Outback Bowl?

and yes, “hate” was not a typo. I wish the Gophers were in a deserved better bowl this year.
