This is our 2nd season in section 232, and i am so sick of the old people that sit behind us. Last night they were yelling at us to sit down. We yelled back at them. They kick down some of seat backs to show their frustration with us of not sitting down. We still continued to cheer to support the Gopher football team. Then they called over a security guard to complain to him. The security guard brought his supervisor up. They complained to the supervisor....and the supervisor told him that they cannot make us sit down. My message to the old people: GO BACK TO THE METRODOME!

Good for you. You did nothing wrong by standing and cheering.

Just remember that they are old, and have suffered through a lot of bad gopher football. I can't say I blame them for being cranky over the last three home games.

Define "old."

Not everyone lives the blind, whoop it up fan lifestyle. For many older alums, it is about showing up and being there because it is what they have done for so long. It would take more than Brewster to give up their seats because that would mean they have been backing the wrong horse in the race for too long.

Students need to be respectful of Alums just as Alums need to let the Students enjoy the game with their youthful enthusiasm.

Do you stand throughout the game like they do in the student section?

I'm in 219, and we picked our seats so we'd be next to the student section, and I feel like we have a lot more fun, laid back fans in our section. We never get yelled at for standing, move your seats next year. As for this year, sit in the student section, there's always lots of room in the upper level.

Very well said. We're all in this together.

Thank You.

I can understand getting irked by fans standing in front of you for the whole game, but for me, it's upsetting when fans don't stand and make noise on key plays.

For example, last night when N. Illinois had a 3th-and-goal (I believe in the 4th quarter), I get up to make some noise. I turn around, though, and to see most of the section still in their seats.

The bus ride over to the State Fairgrounds after the game may have been one of the saddest things I've ever seen at a game. An old-timer (75ish) was talking about the last Rose Bowl team and you could hear just how defeated he was. The look on his face and the tone in his voice told me he fully realizes he's going to die without ever seeing another dominant Gopher football team.

And that is sad.

On the other hand, at least he's seen good Gopher football. I'm 53 and don't remember 1967 so I may die never seeing a dominant Gopher football team.

I'm seven years younger than you and I am right there with you about never seeing dominant Gopher Football again...

The old guy in front of me stands for no reason

I'm not young at 61. One of my earliest sports memories is the 1960 Gopher football team. I stand for things like third downs(I'm usually the first one up as most of the people around me don't seem to have any sense of what is going on in the game) but I get irked at a couple of guys who are even older than me who stand in front of me and discuss something other than football - how there crops are coming, their lumbago, the darn immigrants, etc. I don't know). They aren't enthusiastic fans they're just annoying inconsiderate jerks who are too stupid to understand the game. I don't think standing up for the entire game necessarily makes you a superior fan.

Turds

I can picture this turd that must sit behind you. He sits there with a disgruntled look on his face the entire game, his arms crossed, and the only time he opens his mouth is when he tells you people to sit down. That is just awful!! If you do not like people standing up when you are trying to watch the game, then you should buy better sits where you are in the first two rows. Don't complain when people are trying to have fun by doing whatever they can to support this bunch of sh*t holes on the field. If you don't like people standing up, you have three options: 1.) Buy better seats 2.) Stand up with them 3.) Watch the game at home

I remember the old days at Memorial Stadium. No one complained, everyone yelled, everyone had fun. Man that was a long time ago.

I am in 139. We have a great balance in that section. When there is a big play most everyone stands for that play or two. Then they sit down and enjoy the game. I have had tickets since 71 and I like to stand and cheer my team on. Show them some support. I don't want to be standing for 10 or 15 minutes at a time though to watch a football game.

Got a similar situation in 105. We've had the blue shirts come over the last two weeks warning us that fans have been complaining about our behavior. Fortunately, we've got a good vibe with the yellow shirts on the field (we're in row 3) who came up to say we'd done nothing wrong and told the blue shirts to back off. The field supervisor then came into the stands, apologized and gave us his name to use whenever anyone gives us trouble. Hats off to you, Norm.

The prudes among our fanbase are unreal. Their attitude almost anywhere else in the country would get them lynched.

Lets not forget who paid for this nice new stadium, it isn't current students but alumni. However I still blieve in standing and cheering on the team, but if you want to stand the whole time, go to a NASCAR race. Then maybe they need a buffer zone between the student section and the donor section. WhenI was at Memorial stadium, the whole stadium was a 'student section' because everyone else went to the Viking game. If the Vikes ever leave, Gopher football will become prime ticket again.

I wonder how many text messages the fan relations department has recieved about fans standing in front of them, even during this season.

If you're not in a student section you shouldn't stand the whole game. It's just retarded to stand when it's 2 and 6. Stand when a TD is scored or on a crucial 4th or 3rd down play or similar plays or to celebrate a big play. Those of you whole think you're still students need to realize you're not.

Just you hold on a second. Think about what you just said.

You realize that the students have been paying mandatory stadium fees every semester for years now, right? That includes tens of thousands of students who graduated before TCF even opened. And tuition is only skyrocketing upwards with no end in sight. The state won't give the university any money, so its programs are being cut left and right --- even as tuition continues to rise.

Did the students pay as much as alumni? No. But they pay way too much to this university to be told to be silent and to sit down. This includes recent grads who don't sit in the student section, but still want to stand.

unless you are in a suite, sitting and sipping a drink with your legs crossed, you need to get a life and learn quick that people stand and sit a lot during a football game and engage in general tomfoolery. In ancient rome, these folks would be thrown to the lions.

interesting how testy things get when your team sucks (for 40 years), if they were winning, this thread doesn't exist

This argument is so old...

...This argument is so old... There are always going to be fossils who will complain about anyone who stands for any reason. Then too, there are always going to be the newly minted fans who stand the entire game just because they saw Duke do it on TV and thought it was cool. They can both be very Nazi like.

"Sit down you young whippersnapper. I can't see"

"Stand up and cheer you old goat"

A peaceful solution lies somewhere in between but neither the stander nor the sitter will give an inch. So it's whine whine whine and more threads like this.

It is fun to see the passion this issue brings out in people.

Me... I sit in the front row so I am not bothered by standers or sitters :).

gophertime,

I am right there with you. I am 53 also. I've been watching mediocre to downright putrid Gopher football for 38 years. I don't know if it will ever change.

the u, if you are standing only at key moments in the game that is one thing, but if you are standing throughout the game you need to sit down and respect those sitting behind you.

I'd rather have grumpy old people than the A-hole we sat by in sec 246 row 23. This idiot came to the game just to complain, yell and antagonize everyone around him. Every time something bad would happen he would stand up and cheer sarcastically and turn around and smile and look at everyone. He just ripped on the gophers the whole game. When anything good happened he was silent and got pissed at people cheering. He was even trying to pick a fight with H.S. kids 3-4 rows above him who were cheering. Him and his friends started chanting fire Brewster one play into the game. 6'0-6'1, medium build, white sweat shirt and short black hair...I wanted to go down and grab him by his throat the whole game.

+1

To me it's real simple. Stand and cheer on big plays (3rd and 4th down defense...kickoffs...TD's...etc) Sit down on the "routine" plays.

This is what I tend to do although I must admit that I sit more now because the guy behind me has a cane and can barely stand up so I try to be as courteous as I can. I also stand during timeouts and halftime. One of the oddest things to happen to me was at the Metrodome when I got yelled at by an old guy for standing at halftime cause he wanted to see the band.

Why someone with that attitude would even go to the game is beyond me. If it takes you making fun of a team doing bad to make yourself feel good, then you have issues. Get a life.

Some people feel the need to warm themselves on the fires of other's embarrassments.
