OLD MUSIC

I'd never heard this. Very cool exchange and answer from Freddie Mercury.

I always love hearing truly great people offer their opinion on who THEY think is truly great or elite at their craft. Always incredibly insightful

I'm a big fan of the Eels, and it just happened that Steve Perry turned up at the concert.

The Smithereens / Blood and Roses

One of the best bass lines ever.

Here's some marvelous CSNY footage of what's actually actually a Stills solo tune, although Crosby & Nash lended backing vocals originally. The studio version is one of my favorite songs ever by anyone in the quartet, but this live version elevates it even further. They shred, and Young isn't even wielding an axe.

Live at Wembley Stadium, Love the One You're With

Interesting clip here with the Buffalo Springfield. Intro by Flip Wilson.

Rock & Roll Woman

I have to admit, this is exactly how I feel. Never really liked U2 and never really knew anyone that did.

I've thought U2 was great going back to Boy.

Still think they are great as do the over half million fans I have attended shows with over 4 decades. That includes the 50,000 at TCF Bank Stadium in 2011 which was one of the coolest musical experiences I have had.

I hope they are not done touring, especially if Larry Mullen Jr recovers from his physical health issues.

The passing of Brian Wilson made me think of the flowers that Young-Stills Band threw out for this classic performed by CSN&Y:

Long May You Run

The Smith joins Olivia Rodrigo for The Cure's Just Like Heaven.

Happy Anniversary to what is hands down my favorite R.E.M. album, Lifes Rich Pageant. It was released July 28, 1986.

Cuyahoga

Totally dig the bass line.

Robert Zimmerman from Hibbing broke this one out for the first time in more than a decade recently.

Masters of War

I think this maybe about as old a recording as you can get. Early blues great, Blind Willie Johnson.

John Lennon, 85th Birthday today.

Watching the Wheels

Michael Shannon and co. will be performing it at First Avenue on March 14th. Will I see you there?

Indeed, I thought about trying to also hit Athens but 1st Ave will have to suffice.

Is 2011 old music? It's either put it here or in the random music thread.

I was not aware of this song's or album's existence until I heard it by chance last week. It really hit and moved me--the celebration of our home state and its culture, tied to Russell's home culture of southern California. It's a very well reviewed album; I have the disc on the way.

I haven't looked, but Russell must have been in his 60s when he made this. A late-career triumph for him.

Despite being a Gear Daddies/Martin Zellar fan circa 2001, I was never inclined to see his Neil! show. It was mostly the Hardways doing Neil Diamond tribute shows. I was thinking it might be too corny or sarcastic for my taste.

A friend of mine scored an opening band slot though, so I went in support. I was not even sure I would hang around for the Neil! set, but friends persuaded me to stay. I was also curious about the whole thing.

I was totally wrong. The show was a blast and the crowd was totally into it.

Those shows got pretty legendary followings and was quite a meal ticket for Zellar, being able to charge 3X what he was getting performing his own stuff. I think he still does them every once in a while.

Since that night seeing Zellar, this has become my favorite Neil Diamond song or at least tied with Daydream Believer.

Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show

So based on that alone, I am quite intrigued by the Hugh Jackman/Kate Hudson homage Song Sung Blue, in which the main characters are also Neil Diamond tribute artists.

"There are two types of people in this world. Those who like Neil Diamond and those who don't."

I'm an unapologetic metalhead but throw in some Neil Diamond, Gordon Lightfoot, Al Green or Hank Jr. and I've got no complaints.
