Getting it started

1. Dave Aranda
2. Matt Rhule
3. PJ Fleck
4. Willie Taggert
5. Craig Bohl
6. Neal Brown, Troy ?
7. Scott Satterfield, Appalachian St. ?

I think Minnesota needs to build on the momentum Kill built. I think there is a lot of talent on this team and last year was an excellent recruiting class for Minnesota.

I also think Minnesota needs a coach who is not only a very good coach, but will connect with the fan base better and build excitement.

I was 100% for the Claeys hire and I posted as much at the time. I think it would have been stupid to hire a new coach without a permanent AD. I also think Claeys did well to fill the gap, but isn't the guy. He had his chance and did nothing to impress.

So who do you think would be good and why, there is a lot of knowledge on this board.

If Claeys beats Wisconsin I say keep him. If not, I say move on.

Tulsa has been pretty good. What's the story with their coach?

We need a good head coach that can develop talent, has won the big game, and has shown the ability to run the entire football program. For me -- that narrows it down to Craig Bohl. We can get 6-8 years out of him easily and he has shown he can develop a staff so we might be set after he retires. With Bohl probably entering his final program, we don't have to worry about him leaving should he have immediate success here which is a risk - not only that they will lose the coach, but it puts a ceiling on your recruiting as the players don't know if the coach will stick around - probably an issue for Mason and likely used against Kill (although health and not winning related).

Just a couple thoughts...
Number one: Anybody needs to see what happens the next two weeks before contemplating anything it would seem to me? We do seem to be getting better more so than worse as the season goes along.
Number two: Who would you rather have as your coach tonight? Tracy or Mike Riley? What if Tommy Armstrong is the Gopher quarterback Tracy inherited like Riley did? Do the Gophers win by a bunch tonight?
Number three: I'm not too sure it is possible to hire a coach we'll all be happy with. ha I have several reservations about Tracy, but he has plusses too. I know Bohl had Wyoming ties to land there but why didn't he jump higher than that to start? He seems very good. On a side not: Curious how they imploded today though...losing 69 to 66 to UNLV.

Good post. Good rationale.

I still think Coyle sticks with TC if he goes 1-1 the last two games. If he does, I don't look for a big Ooo-ah.... extension. 3 years at the max.

I'm fine with Tracy Claeys sticking around for awhile. How about we give him a legitimate opportunity?

As others have pointed out, the season needs to play itself out. People seem to forget how painful the coaching search was after we canned Brewster. Kill was not some brilliant hire but rather someone we backed in to and we got lucky up until last year. Claeys still has a chance to redeem himself these next two games and perhaps with a bowl win.

Dave Aranda is not coming here. He, if he chooses, will have his list of whatever school he wants to go to. The only way is if we offer mega bucks, and UofM is not going to do something like that.

We more than likely will find a coach who is just like TC, just with a different name.

The team has a pretty good core of players, particularly on defense. The shelf is not empty. We have a newish stadium, new facilities next year. New athletic director and Kaler has been friendlier towards sports. It's not the same situation as the Mason years or after Brew was canned.

What's lacking is a large, fervent fan base and currently, enthusiasm. If Coyle decides to go in another direction I think it will be solely to stoke interest and enthusiasm. They need to get butts in the seats. It would be a gamble, all these sorts of decisions are. Can Claeys do it? Sure it's possible but he's not generating enthusiasm right now outside of the diehards on this site, and even many of us are losing the faith.

Personally, I fear the loss of our defensive staff more than Claeys per se. The defense is good enough for us to win a lot of games. The offense is not. Can Claeys recruit and develop offensive players? I don't know. Certain position groups, eg receivers need a coaching change. So far the evidence at QB is not positive, but it's early and we have Mitch, a limited player that may be mind-****ed by the previous staff.

It would help if Claeys would look even a little engaged on the sidelines instead of staring aimlessly at the at the big screen. I am from Fargo. Craig Bohl is the guy if you want someone to take charge and pump up the fan base. No nonsense, very organized, knows how to recruit and a helluva coach.
Please Mr Coyle...talk to Coach Bohl!!!

I'm in favor of keeping Claeys, but if the Gophers were to make a switch I'd hope it'd be Bohl, he already has proven he can recruit better football players from Minnesota, than the Gophers can.

No way you were 100% for Claeys if you want to dump a head coach in his first year at 7-3. Why don't you just keep it 100

Sorry, but I think a lot of Gopher fans have horribly over-rated the level of talent on this team. Virtually every team they play has better athletes - faster, quicker, more dynamic. In the clutch, other teams have athletes who make big plays. The Gophers need everything to go right to win - because the other teams have better athletes.

If the Gophers are going to change coaches, recruiting has to be the #1 criteria. Yes, I know that sounds like Brewster Part 2, but you can learn from your mistakes. If you hire a coach who is primarily a recruiter, then you make sure there is an underlying coaching philosophy in place, and hire coordinators who will implement that philosophy. If you hire a coach who is primarily an X's & O's guy, then you have to make sure the top assistant coaches are proven successful recruiters.

Need better talent. Need better talent. Need better talent. Need better talent. Want to win games? Need better talent.

If your players are a step slower than the guy they're matched up against, schemes only take you so far. More often than not, the better athlete will make a play to win the game.

Coaches to be hired:

1.) Nick Saban
2.) Urban Meyers
3.) Chris Peterson
4.) 55 year old Hayden Fry
5.) Hayden Fox

Recruits to be signed:

1.) Trey Smith OL
2.) Robert Beal DL
3.) Isaiah Wilson OT
4.) Hunter Johnson QB
5.) Marvin Wilson DT

Donors to be bleed:

1.) Katherine Tanner
2.) Alexandra Daitch
3.) William Young
4.) Sarah MacMillan
5.) Lucy Stitzer

Oh and swap TCF for US Bank. Ta hell with being on campus. Let's get drunk and stay warm!

Good take on the situation. I agree with about 95% of it. But I do not think Coyle makes a coaching move to ignight enthusiasm. That would be such a short term view. Winning is what generates interest. And this is the most important hire in the entire athletic department. You don't do it to "shock the system". This is a hire that will be a cornerstone of his legacy as AD.

Barring what happens in the next three games, given where we are at right now the ONLY way Coyle makes a change is if he's got The Guy in his hip pocket. No way it is opened to a general search. Especially because of all you note above. They have a young team. Solid core of players. Especially on the D side of the ball. And the strength of the team and returning players, outside of our running backs, are on that side of the ball. Which is where Clayes' responsibility began and ended over the last several years. He fired the right guy. Kitchen was frighteningly bare at QB, O line and WR. What the hell was Limegrover doing the past 3 years. I mean, my God!

The most significant loss we will have from this year is ML7. I like him. He's a competitor and an easy guy to root for. But, he hasn't played well this year. Made poor decisions. And a 5th year senior at that position HAS to win you games. He's been put in position to do so by this team and coaching staff. And he hasn't delivered. Which is frustrating as a fan, but makes me feel more optimistic about next year as with just average QB play we'll be a push at that position with, likely, a better supporting cast.

I see the current staff getting another year to see what they can do. The new facilities are not even completed. And showing new recruits and coaching candidates a complete facility vs a 3-D fly thru is much different. I'd bet he waits until these are completed, gives the current regime another year, which they deserve, and then evaluates things.

We found Kill, he did a hell of a lot for this program and built and generated the most excitement since Lou Holtz.

And the A.D. and the Administration were heavily ripped for getting their 7-8 choice and a no name one at that! Oddly enough, that all changed when Kill came in and told everybody how terrible the program was up here. How it would take years to turn it around and how it would be very difficult to do it. Later he got more bonus points for saying how he had under estimated how shee-tee things were up here.

Minnesota and Gopher Fans LOVED him for it. We even gave him a pass for lying about his medical history.

Nope, as long as we're heading into fantasyland Nick Saban, Urban Meyers or Chris Peterson are the go-to guys.

Gopher Bulldog, good point about having the next guy in his hip pocket. If Claeys stays he better have a hell of a year next year, because he is getting the worst recruiting class in the Big Ten this year. And I know all about the rankings debate, but dead last says something.

Dude, seriously- Minnesota's 7 victories are against teams with a average (mean) of 3.4 victories. Minnesota's 3 losses are against teams with a average of 7.3 victories. In other words Minnesota's record is a result of their easy schedule. If you want to keep Claeys based on that good luck.

Talent obviously helps but I would argue coaching matters a great deal. The top programs have top coaches that trickled up so they have the best of both worlds. It's not just about playcalling. Development, recruiting, time management, and yep playcalling all matter. Sure there are a lot of coaches that lucked into a once in a generation QB etc and get called up to the bigs only to fail, but there are coaches who consistently do less with more both at the lower levels and upper levels.

I'm far from a guy with his finger on the pulse of the recruiting situation. But with the current team, I see a lot of contributions from underclassmen that give me hope for the future. And most are on the defensive side of he ball. Which tells me Clayes can bring in young talent that may be under the radar. The recruiting ratings are far from an exact science. If you look at Scout, between 40 - 60 you'll find Wisky, Illinois, Minnesota, Purdue, Indiana... Not great company, I know. But also not far from where we've traditionally been. To suggest (I'm not saying you are doing this, just making a point) the rest of the conference have all a sudden lapped us since Clayes has been at the controls is not an objective analysis.

Dude? On that scale Mason should have been fired after going 10-3 in 2003. He lost to every Top 25 team he played. His "signature wins" were over Penn State who finished 3-9 and Oregon a team that finished 8-5 and 5-3 in the Pac 10.

You want to look for other reasons to fire Claeys after the season is done fine. There could be cause for it.

But by your scale they'd be hiring a new Head Coach every year. Because it's so easy to do. You know, fantasy football style.

Dude, it's reality. AP poll- USC (7-3) ranked #15. LSU (7-3) ranked #16. FSU (7-3) ranked #17. Minnesota (7-3) not ranked. There's a reason these teams are ranked and Minnesota isn't. Minnesota hasn't defeated a team that's noteworthy. It is what it is.

This is moronic! You are going to decide to keep of fire Claeys based on the outcome of the Wisconsin game? You don't get it, and anyone calling for Claeys job this season also doesn't get it. You're frustrated because we have lost three games that we had a chance to win, this is one of the better teams we have had in years and both the players and the coaches are still learning how to win, they are getting better at that. We improve automatically with Mitch gone and Seth Green taking over, I promise!

As usual you're ****in delusional. Really dude 7.3/9 that's bad think I wouldn't catch you trying to skew that ****in retard

Would you rather that the Gophers lost those games?
