Ohio State Matchups?

Obviously that was a typo...our d-line may rotate 8 or more guys, is talented, and may outplay their talented, but still defining positions and looking to gel, oline...especially late if d-line rotation works.

What else is nonsense?
Love your optimism and most of your post but think Rush has been below average the entire time and not sure how he keeps seeing the field.

He was responding to someone who said the Gophers "obviously" don't match up physically. The words "equal" and "better" do not appear in his post anywhere.
That someone was me. And I didn’t say that. I said they don’t match up athletically on the outside and they dont. He pulled high school track times and rankings to prove me wrong. But refused to acknowledge Ohio state guys have the same or better metrics.

I get it.

But the word 'fan' came from 'fanatic' (or so I've been told). Therefore, the realism and rationality you point to and praise seem a little out of place for true-blue fans. It's one thing to be realistic, but it's taking it to another level when a 'fan' is lightning-quick to throw cold water on any show of enthusiasm.

If we're placing large bets, I want rationality and realism. If we're rooting for and building up our team, I prefer lots of enthusiasm.

And Swingman made a really good case for his argument that the Gophers may not be as far from Ohio State's level as we (very Minnesotan) 'fans' think they are.
So you're going to put my fandom in quotes because I'm realistic and rationale. That checks out with most of your other takes.

Make no mistake, I'm rooting for Minnesota. But talking about football in a realistic manner isn't throwing cold water on enthusiasm. Your hyperbole completely misses the point. We have a path to win this game, it would be a HUGE win for our program. That's what most of this thread was talking about until you decided to admittingly be confused at people who you admit are speaking rationally (and you "get" that they're speaking rationally).

Because I'm a fan and not just a dog wagging my tail, I recognize how enormous this win would be for the program. PJ Fleck recognizes that. All of the fans recognize that (watch the field if we win). If Ohio State wins this game, it's kind of just business as usual.

In just over a week, we'll no longer have to speculate as to whether or not the Gophers can play on Ohio State's level. We'll have proof, one way or the other.
Then we should shut down all threads that aren't, in your words, irrationally optimistic? Or are these ones also cool?

I've already picked a Gopher win twice in different threads, but this is a message board and it's fine for people to discuss both sides.

That and make a few field goals. Special teams were so awful last year.
I’d rather poke my eyes out with hot needles than watch Brock walker kick another Fg/xp for Minnesota. I hope that the specialists have worked out all kinks since 2019 with this new transfer place kicker. Easy way for us to maintain stability is just have special teams give us the points we need inside 40 when we can’t get a touchdown.

I’ve got us with a 40% chance to win, 40% chance to lose in a tight game, 20% chance we get blown out… never have I felt that good going up against OSU

Did I actually say something about "shutting down threads", or is that just an example of you using hyperbole?

Without question the weak link with the 2021 Gophers will be the defensive secondary. If Durr was a wanted commodity, he would be in the NFL and not playing his sixth year of college. And what’s sad, he was/is the best we got.

So sad. Very sad.

Guy was kicking while recovering from a sports hernia last fall

swingman- your enthusiasm is admirable. But you have crossed the line into delusional. Coach Wilt is not even close in comparison to Larry Johnson as DL coach. Johnson is the reason OSU gets incredible talent. This year OSU has 2 freshmen DEs that were the top 2 defensive lineman in the 2021 class. They are not even starting. The Gopher line will not have much fun with these backups. They are higher rated than Joey Bosa and Chase Young out of high school.

Is that why he missed a fg and a pat vs Iowa in 2019? Because of a hernia injury that he was recovering from the next season? He’s just a bad kicker nothing to do with injuries.

You're right, he missed a 50 yard field goal and a PAT. Thank you for your cordial post.

He has a career long of 29 yards and doesn’t break top 100 in any measured category (101st in field goal percentage of 66.7% is his “best” stat) of any active ncaa kicker. He is a terrible kicker no way around it. The thing about kickers is they are very easy to compare unlike many other positions in football.

I believe we will know in the first 5 minutes what type of game we will have. We have to win the line of scrimmage and we will know right away.
I kind of think the opposite. We're built for a long and grinding game. I wouldn't be shocked if it takes our offense a couple quarters to really start pushing them around (if we do). My point, I am not so concerned about them being able to control the line of scrimmage in the first quarter as I am about us keeping it close enough throughout the game where we can really start wearing on them in the 4th.

Ouch. But point taken. Sadly, he was the best option on the team recenty and we should all thank him for doing the best he could. But the fact that the staff brought in not one but TWO transfer kickers from G5 schools should tell you all you need to know about their confidence in Walker's ability -- healthy or not.

I agree. No matter how much practice we've had, we could well be shellshocked in the beginning, with our first live contact of the season coming against the "shock & awe" attack of Ohio State. But if Ohio State isn't able put us away early, if we can stay with them well into the second half, then, having become acclimated to this year's version of OSU, I think this is a Gopher team that won't be gassed or fold at the end. This Gopher team has a lot of talent (hope it's enough); it has the depth to remain viable in a slugfest throughout the 4th Q; and it has a collection 5* hearts.

I honestly don't why you would personally attack a walk-on player who (because of recruiting failures and COVID) was thrust into a position that taxed his abilities, yet who operated to the best of his abilities and in absolute good faith as a teammate. What's wrong with you? Walk-on players aren't paid professionals; they are just kids trying to help their team in any way they can. Who the hell are you to dump on such a kid? Your post reveals much more about your insecure and mean-spirited personality than it does about any particular Gopher kicker.

I would hope you’re planning to find a place to put down a very hefty wager on us to win

Have you looked at the OSU line scouting reports? They have an embarrassment of riches. Their problem is getting them all playing time. Several played against Clemson in the playoffs and mauled the Tigers. No fall off for this year. Check out Paris Johnson. Sophomore tackle/guard. 5th overall player in 2020 class. Backup/starter at 6’7” 315lb and speed to play guard or tackle

Ohio State has lots of really good players?! Stop the presses!

Seriously though, they likely have a higher rated recruit at almost every position on the field. They've only lost two conference games in like the last 5 years. We know they're talented. I think the point of some in this thread is that Minnesota is CLOSER at many position groups than they've ever been...and combined with MInnesota's experience and some of the inexperience OSU will be running out there's a chance this game could be close.
