Answer the question Maxy...if the roles were reversed, you would be screaming bloody murder if it was not called.

No. No call either way. You can't call everything you see. Had no affect on play and was not egregious.

It was hands to the face, not facemasking. He pushed at his facemask as they were both going to the ground.

Maxy is right. Weak call.

I know it was hands to the face. What is your point? It was not a weak call. None of you have answered how you would have reacted if the roles were reversed. I hate Wisconsin, I just have no idea how any of you have an issue with this call the way the rules are now enforced. It was unfortunate.

On the line of scrimmage it's different. This was in a pile going to the ground. Again it had no impact on what happened in the end. Angles and speed on the field are much different than slow motion at home.

I can see your point. However, we will have to agree to disagree.

I completely agree with Stan on this one. Hand's to the face was a point of emphasis for the officials before the season. I have seen more of that called this year on both offensive and defensive linemen than have in year's past. Does it suck that Tommy O's hand happened to catch the guys facemask? Yes that sucks, but if the officials see that this year they are going to call it. It's that simple.

The missed delay was bad, but doesn't excuse our execution. Who's to say they don't run the exact same play after the penalty? The rest of it is nitpicking. We get boned far, far worse every time we play Bo at the Kohl Center.

Correct. We needed to call a timeout. The DB's were not on the same page.

That is what I was thinking.
That's a terrible spot. Someone needed to tell Jerry to challenge that. Less critical call, but if you watched the play where Gordon was hurt, Wiscy lineman had a big fistful of Richardson's jersey.

What calls went against WI?

I remember thinking while watching it live that we got away with a hold on Leidner's TD run in the first quarter, think it was the TE who set the edge that Leidner went around. I could be totally wrong but I said to my kids it looked like holding right away and was very relieved when it wasn't called.

Bottom line to me at least is that I don't want to see us pin this one on the refs and people really need to stop complaining about the Fruechte spot because that is 100% on us for not challenging it. Bad spots happen but when the replay booth didn't call for a review our staff has to see that and challenge the spot on the field.

Agree with both points 100%

I agree, nothing was game changing. Our defense was the game changer today.

I completely disagree with you here. That was one of the worst calls I have seen in a while. Our lineman was falling to the ground and bumped the guys facemask. How ticky tack can you get? I couldn't really see anything when I watched it again. This was a crucial penalty and a HORRIBLE call!!!

He didn't bump the face mask he grabbed the facemask. It wasn't vicious or violent but you can clearly see Olson's hand briefly grab the guys facemask on the way down. As someone else mentioned hands to the face is a major point of emphasis so if the refs see a player grab another guys facemask they are going to make the call.

A weak call? His hands were on the players mask and his head turned. What more do you need?

By this logic, if you're being blocked, all you do is just bend over (or fall over) and unless the blocker immediately disengages, you get a hands to the face call. That's pretty much what happened.

If you're going to pretty much ignore offensive holding all game long, you cannot make that call on Olson, simple as that. It was a terrible call and had a big impact on the game.

I am a college football official. Not that it matters much but this was a bad call. It was not bad it was horrible. There was hardly any contact at all. I have watched it several times. Most refs wouldn't even have seen it let alone dare to call it. Brutal.

SMH...Sometimes I really wonder what game people on here actually watched. Tommy was blocking his man, he did not "fall to the ground" and "bump the guys facemask." Seriously? Go watch it again. His initial contact with his right hand was on the Wisconsin players facemask. Cripes, quit making me defend Big Ten Officials.

Although a few of those plays didn't go the Gopher's way, can't blame the refs on this game. If anything, blame Kill and his staff for not challenging the suspect spot play, and the play clock running out.

Damn you. Went back and watched it. Letter of the law it is a foul. He mauled the guy and his hand got on the mask and twisted the head.

Besides the phantom hands to the face as the Sconni lineman was already falllingto the ground before the hands hit him....I enjoyed the "Chop block" call that I believe ended up being declined but in replay there is no way it should have been called, even the TV crew said it wa a pretty weak call that shouldn't be called in a game like todays.

Play clock at zero before snap on huge play to Ericson.

Fruechte comes back for catch and gets knees down a full yard past marker and ref marks him short, and we end up punting.

Not pictured is the week hands to the face call on Olson that took a first and goal from the 5 into a FG.

Previous series a hands to the face on Botticelli that wasn't called, several missed holding calls on our DL, and it was a weakly officiated game by one of the poorest crews in the B1G.

This is that long pass to Erickson, check out the play clock in the upper left.

Look where he is, the ball was spotted at the 21. They are moving to right to left.

Face mask on Clement on 3rd and very long. Would have given the Badgers a first down inside Gopher territory. Instead the Badgers punted. Looks like the guy who got the Gopher face mask on the punt return might have been held. There's a lot of holding in football-- don't know how the choose what to call.

Good and well balanced thread.

The spot was terrible, no doubt. Maybe they just thought they would pick it up on third down.

I thought there was an obvious missed hold on the first Leidner TD run. The hands to the face call kind of evens that out.

When they call delay of game, they don't call it when the clock hits zero, they call it after the ref looking at the clock looks down after it hits zero to see if it is snapped. It happens quite often.

As for holding, as long as the blockers arms are inside, you are allowed to "hold" the defensive player. It is when they get outside and they continue to hold the player that holding should be called. It is why defensive players are coached to keep the offensive players hands off them. It makes it look like holding is happening all the time when it is not the case. They also will call holding quite often if the defender is thrown to the ground, even with the hands inside. Strength is obviously a key to the technique, on both sides of the line.

Being a Badger fan, it's no surprise that you think this is true. Your team is the most egregious at holding in the conference.

It doesn't neccesarily matter where the hands are. They can "dance" with their hands grabbed on, but if the defender moves towards the ball holder and is restrained that's a hold. Even when the hands are clearly on the arms, shoulders, or hooked its rarely called. It's not called very often because the sporting public loves their offense and a 7-3 defensive slugfest is probably too baseball like for the casual fan, not to mention concussed QBs. It's no surprise records are falling left and right.

There were a lot of long arms draped around the Gophers all day, along with those fists full of jersey. Except for the failure to call offensive holding, the game was decently called, IMO.

I couldnt believe my eyes when one of the badgers tackled our DL in the backfield chasing Stave? in the first quarter. KNew it was going to be a long game after that. I also thought that travis got blatantly blocked in the back by a WR on a huge play for the badgers too.

The spot was terrible, Jerry definitely should have made a stink. The hands to the face call I thought was pretty weak. I was completely dumfounded when they let them snap it with 00 left on the play clock. Could have sworn I counted One mississippi at least.

Overall I have been very disappointed in the officiating this year in general. They act like they are NBA refs trying to effect the outcome of the game to often.

It would just be nice to see consistency during the game, and during the season. I think that's the most frustrating part. Clearly in yesterday's game, the mistakes by the referees went in Wisconsin's favor. Referees are human - they get influenced by team reputation and home crowds.
