***OFFICIAL wisconsin AT MINNESOTA RIVALRY GAME IN-GAME THREAD, BETTER DEAD THAN RED!!!***

Terrific game—both teams played beautifully; two first-rate coaches; and well officiated (other than the two Badger flops). Minnesota dominated the series from 1970 to 1999. The Badgers have returned the favor since the Clem era. As a couple of other posters have written: we are coming with Niko leading the way.
Refs did miss a few pretty obvious travels on the badgers and called a couple ticky tack fouls that are usually just the normal rough and tumble play in the B1G.

Groves got hammered on the "great Janicki block" per Shon Morris. Doubt he would've made the FT's but still....

Tyson missing 2 of 3 FT's late was a killer.

Great effort. Gonna really miss Tyson and Reynolds next year.

Finallly...the Badgers are a bunch of punks. Janicki talking smack on a block (obvious foul), Carrington and Boyd taunting to the crowd, and the rest of the douches going to shush the student section after the buzzer beater.....gotta hope karma is a bitch.

The sting of losing a 1 point game in OT still lingers, but no time to sulk. The Red Menace awaits. And somewhere Marcus Fuller is disappointed he no longer covers the Gophers so he can write his annual "Former MN HS players now playing for wisconsin."

We must never forget Nolan Winter blew kisses to the Gopher student section. We must never forget Carrington traded his maroon and gold for red and white (albeit with a pitstop in between).

wisconsin is coming off one of the biggest upsets in CBB this year. They are playing great. We cannot let them open a lead and get their visiting fans who need to live in MN for better quality of life an opportunity to get loud.

WE MUST DEFEND OUR HOME COURT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GET 'ER DONE MEDVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tough week for gophers, 1 point overtime loss to SC and now a buzzer beater by the badgers. Should be 5-1, but I’m really impressed with how well this team plays. I know the wins will come. Medved continues to impress and he has this program moving in the right direction.

So pissed off.

Put the game on record, watched until about 10 minutes left and changed channels on that TV to do a podcast. Had another tv on ACC and didn’t think they would show a score, get done with our show, go to the recording and out of the side of my eye I see a replay of the skunks celebrating.

Still watched the last 10 minutes hoping it was some other team in red…gutted

Need more bodies, more minutes. guys are working hard, but this is another lost season.

Positive are the minutes Grove and Shinholster are getting.

Been a long time since we’ve seen a healthy team for the majority of the season.

I love this squad. They come as close to maxing themselves out as any time I have seen here. Comparable to the Arob, Hagen, Coleman, Grier, Lawson team years back. Had they won these last two at the buzzer instead of the reverse, they would be in serious tournament contention. As it is we just have to watch and enjoy basketball the way it is supposed to be played. Better days are ahead for this program- finally.
Cool, moral victory

Still an “L” in a winnable game

We would easily have 2 more wins if we had our depth. A sign of a good coach is getting the most out of a 7 man rotation of guys who weren't supposed to be competing.
We would also have 2 more wins if the zebras would have called the game fair. CBM's double dribble / travel and phantom foul for USC. Grove got mauled by Janicki, I know I've missed a few. But we also could have won if we hit our free throws. I'm of the belief that, yes we need to control what we can control, but when the refs blow calls that sway momentum the other way, it just adds extra defenders and puts it in their hands.
Let's keep fighting and beating expectations. GO GOPHERS!

Did Carrington start?
Carrington did not start. He did get 21 points on 27 minutes, including 7-12 on 3's.

Gophers had them until Wisconsin again and again hit 3's. The worst scenario happened. Plus trash officiating again. Really unfair. The USC game was a vomit-inducing ref-induced-loss by 1. Well-trained flop seems to be the new it. Screwed in the WI game but not as outrageous.

To be fair, most of us weren't sorry to see him go when he left. He was just fair at Tulsa last season. He's having his most efficient season as a senior and I'm not going to begrudge him his moment.
I think some of the reason people weren't up in arms about him leaving was because he deserted the team one of his seasons here. If my memory is correct, he left mid-season for mental health reasons. A lot of people felt like he just quit on the team. So, now to see him come in and play well for a rival and taunt the crowd as he does it, it's a little bit of a slap in the face.

I don't think anyone is suggesting they are ok with the loss. But it's clear the players are playing extremely hard and the future is bright. If before the season we were told we had two, maybe three starters out for the year and are sitting at 3-3 in the Big Ten, we would have been very surprised.

I totally agree, it will be very important for Niko to bring in at least one athletic wing, who can both shoot and defend. The other pieces should be there.

Best returning 3 pt shooters are currently: JCJ at 34%, Durkin 33% , and both Asuma and Kai at 31%. That is a huge weakness. Now both Tomes and Anderson are great shooters, I just don't know how well freshmen will shoot, and how much they can play.

I was speechless walking out of Williams and the whole ride home. Didn't even want to listen to the post game show that the Missus and I usually do. Need more bodies on the court and more Gopher butts in the seats, we cant have a home court advantage when the crowd is nearly 50/50.

Losing always sucks, especially in games that were winnable but it's sports, someone has to win and someone has to lose.

It is clear what Niko is trying to build. Have caught some brutal luck on the injury front this year but the players/coaches are battling and doing better then a team with a 7 player rotation with limited size should be able to.

Would have been really interesting to see what this team could have done had they managed to stay mostly healthy.

I get the frustration on the part of some fans coming off of the last few years but hopefully people are seeing that this season is more of a bump in the road on the way to better things as opposed to a continuation of the last few years.

Obviously, a depressing loss especially considering that the Gophers largely controlled the game in the first half. Still, they fought back again and tied the game with seconds left. Tyson made a great shot to tie it but Blackwell, having only 5 seconds, made an even better one to win it.

As others have said, need more reliable healthy bodies next season. We maintain well enough when Grove subs but definitely lose something when one of our starting guards goes to the bench.

It was at least encouraging that we weren't dominated by their inside players this time. The Gophers had real problems guarding Crowl in the past and his passing was as dangerous as his scoring. Winter was good last night but not as difficult to handle by himself as the two of them were in previous years.

I like where Niko is at with the squad. We're competing. Not a tournament level team unfortunatley but that's alright.

Asuma is a stud and going to get even better with Niko.
It'll hurt to lose Reynolds and Tyson, I like those guys but should be easier for him to fill just a couple spots as opposed to bring in the whole team via transfer this coming year.
No past coaches would have gotten shit from a guy like Grove already. I love to see it.

I didn't realize everybody else will possibly be back, including the big one with JCJ.

I think we'd like to upgrade at the Vaihola spot next year and I think unfortunately we'd like to and can upgrade at Willis's spot as well.

I look forward to watching the team the rest of the year.

Niko's teams just compete.

I think next year we expect NCAA tournament. Not this year is fine with me.

Who stepped back from Reynolds to open him up to launch an undefended three? Can't be doing that.

I didn't have high hopes of them making the tournament in year 1 regardless but seeing how the 7 we have have played I honestly wonder if this would have been a tournament team had they managed to not lose so many key pieces.

Will be interesting to see what they are able bring in from the portal. Going to have to replace a fair amount of offense and next year's leading scorer is most likely not on the team right now.
