Who's been guarding Tucker?

75-70 Gophers :18 sec. Gophers ball

Glad I didnt see this game, blood pressure is still high from the Vikings game.

Gophers 78- WSU 72 F

Williams 12, Mbakwe 11, Nolen 10, Iverson 9, Sampson 9, Hoffarber 9, Walker 8, Hollins 4, Armelin 3, Ahanmisi 3

WSU was D2 champs in 06 and 08, so they have a good program but still no excuse if they would have lost. A win is a win, im sure it will be a good learning experience for them and Im sure Tubby is letting them hear it in the locker room.

Holy S---,

Don't know what to take from this one. I would really prefer that the Gophers play a game like this rather than beat the hell out of someone else, but this was a bit too close for comfort. Hats off to Winona State for an entertaining game.

Sounds like we played a good squad, played very badly, played without our best player, yet we still won. I certainly would've liked to see us win by 30 but reality in small doses can be a good thing.

Wow, can you let Mbakwe touch the ball late and the Gophers have a small lead?

Hopefully got the garbage out of their system, but who knows. Outscored 11-0, 15-7, 28-15 late in the 2nd half by a D2 team, albeit a very good D2 team. Not a good omen.

Yep.

Assuming the Gophers hold on and win, what do they take away from this game? Experience in a close game or we got that garbage out of our system?

Bad: Really sloppy. Have to be under control. Play smarter. None of the big guys (except Trevor) could hang on to the ball. The bigs are not moving - when we try to force the ball to them it is a TO. Really poor FT shooting. Poor defense. Winona was wide open - they finally started to hit their shots. Al was really off shooting - seems almost a mental block he was so far off.

Good: Gophers owned the boards. Trevor looked good - has to hit FTs. Walker looked good at times. Rodney was a much bigger part of the offense (baby steps). Al broke the press single handedly and made some nice passes - the bigs could not catch them. The freshman settled down and looked much better in the second half. Maverick handled the ball OK - not many TO. Hollins made some good hustle plays. Devoe would have made a difference.

Devoe

Hey, if Devoe doesn't play who is an offensive threat besides Hoffarber from three? Rest of the guys are pretty easy to guard I'd say. Most alarming is giving up 70 points to anybody let alone Winona St. I know they are a very good DII program but they are DII.

It's early...Tubby will figure out the defense.

I think the Gophers were 3 for 13 from 3 pt. land. Give credit to Winona for that. I didn't see very many open looks, except when it was someone they weren't afraid of. The free throw shooting was terrible. Mbakwe must have hit the right side of the iron 8 - 10 times.

Not sure why people are getting so animated... whether we want to admit or not, Tucker would be the best player on the Gophers. He was well on his way to being a huge scorer for Iowa before the off-court issues.

This was an exhibition game. Nothing to worry about yet, besides Devoe's 'status.'

Tucker is impressive. Wish he would've come to the U instead of Iowa years back.

Two things wrong with this post

1. No way Tucker would be the best player on the Gophers, that's ridiculous
2. The Gophers never offered Tucker despite scouting him heavily, there was never any chance he was coming to Minnesota.

who else here thinks rodney will make a nice contribution this year, what i noticed is his bball i.q. is up, he makes the right pass, he rebounds to his potential at least in these last 2 games, he's gonna get his 2 blocks a game, and he put it on the floor a little tonight, i especially like that baseline drive. play like that every game rod.

1. Almost as ridiculous as calling something ridiculous without suggesting who's better.
2. The Gophers never offered Tucker because he had already committed to Iowa basically by the time Tubby had figured out just how many scholarships he had left to offer.

Hey, on the bright side we're not Tennessee, who got beat by a D2 team last night. And we're not Indiana who had to pull out their game, I think, against a D2 in overtime. The Gophers were a bit sloppy but probably just got caught up in the hype from ESPN and the other love they were getting and were certainly over confident last night. Give credit and thanks to Winona State, this is a game that likely will serve the boys pretty well.

Really it was the perfect scenario for Tubby. They won but looked poorly, allowing for a teachable moment without damage. Tubby needs a teachable moment as well- his offense and the execution that the players provided looked little league compared with WSUs execution. We won only with a big edge in overall talent. Meanwhile Winona State has a well coached squad with some good players and they should be proud of their effort last night.

I have been impressed with Austin and Mo, Chip somewhat, and Maverick has REALLY surprised me. He looks much better than was described by the reports on here and has looked confident and comfortable with the ball in his hands.

As expected Maverick has looked like the worst player on the team by far. He brings the ball down the court with only the intent to get it our of his hands before he meets a defender. No setting up plays or getting the ball to a teammate in position to score. His defense is poor, he's not quick or athletic. If Devoe is out for a prolonged time we could really need Bryant Allen.

Ralph looked absolutely terrible last night. Awful shot selecting and field goal percentage for a guy playing against a much smaller line-up.

IMO, Mav has looked much better than Justin Cobbs ever did (including exhibition) I was expecting Mav to look overwhelmed, turning it over, shooting airballs the way everyone on here made it sound. To me, he looked confident and comfortable with the ball (not terrified like Cobbs often did) and even had a few nice scoring plays, the 2 3's against Northeastern and a nice and-1 finish against Winona. No one expected him to be starting PG day one, but to me he has looked much better than people on here described him to be.

We will see how that holds up in big 10 play though.

I gotta disagree with you there. He's always looked uncomfortable to me, his threes were wide-open at the end of a blowout, and the offense bogs down when he's in, because he looks to be getting rid of it as soon as he can. Cobbs always looked to me like a kid with talent, but with a bit of an attitude problem. His shooting was terrible at times, but he had pretty good athleticism, compared to Maverick, and I was disappointed he left.

IMO Cobbs had a lot more upside, far more athletic and talented. I don't if he couldn't perform because Tubby's short leash (like some have suggested) or what, but he sure could choke. I'll be following his play at Cal, along with a couple local guards the Gophers passed on.
