***OFFICIAL WASHINGTON AT MINNESOTA IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

Gophers needed to foul a bad freethrow shooter before time went off the clock at the 10.8 second mark. No way should we let the ball be inbounded before fouling, especially when Washington starts their inbound set in a bunched formation. Hold the terrible shooter and make the refs call the foul.

Well those of you that were panicking about a possible winning streak saving Johnson's job are probably celebrating now.

This should pretty much seal the deal....if we can't beat Washington at home there is no way we are winning enough of the remaining games to take a coaching change off the table.

Hopefully we can at least win enough to get into the Big Ten Tournament.
Come on Mr Positive.

After last game Ben Johnson said most of his players had never played at Breslin Center before so that loss was a learning experience.

Assume since most of his players had never loss to Washington before this was also a learning experience. 🤷🏼‍♂️
Ben's vast experience losing helps him deal with all this losing.

Just below Rincon peak east of Tucson. If I start walking, I could be there in an hour
Funny. I've been to Mount Lemmon. First year of college was U of A. Went there a couple times. Found a guy froze to death. Never realized I would someday wish that was me after a Gopher game/season/seasons/decade/decades.

You personally found a guy frozen? Holy crap! When was that?

Yes 1990-91. Don't remember the exact month. A group went drinking disguised as camping in the winter. Got there in the dark. Came to (not woke up) the next morning and walked about 30-50 feet and there he was under a tree.
I was going to ask my wife about that, but she was at U of A ten years prior to you.

Me too. Queen Valley, AZ. 70 and sunny and about to take out my frustrations beating our Ranger against to rocks!
I think my high school baseball team got our asses kicked by Queen Valley high School in their first year of existence. About 1988-90.

I don't think it got any publicity even if she/you stayed in the area. I think it was just a guy that mixed medication and alcohol and couldn't then overcome freezing temps. Not sure it even made the news.

I don't know if the Gophers thought this was going to be an easy win, but I didn't. I've watched the Huskies play, and I knew better.
I mean, you would hope this team wouldn't take anyone for granted. But I guess anything is possible. Washington has a couple of decent pieces but that was a team we absolutely should have beaten at home.

The one thing I can't understand about this year's team is Ben's obsession with playing Patterson for big minutes.

When you look at his stats beyond his atrocious shooting, I get that he appears to be a relatively steady-handed PG with a nearly 4-1 Assist/TO ratio.

But my goodness, what's not counted as a turnover is when he:
  • Backs into the lane and forces a godawful shot
  • Backs into the lane and passes back out to his teammate for a godawful shot as the shot clock expires
  • Backs into the lane and kicks it out to a teammate, who takes the shot clock violation.
Not to mention holding the ball a second too long when swinging it, allowing the defense to get set again. Or passing up the actual wide-open shots (but still thinking about it), allowing the defense to recover again.

If his grenades were counted as turnovers, I'm convinced the A/TO ratio would be sub-1.

But you know what? Is it really his fault if the coach doesn't seem to mind? I've never seen Ben look upset about it, which is perplexing, as he was also Division 1 PG and should see how much his tendencies kill the flow of the offense.

Meanwhile, Asuma, our only offensive threat in the first half, sits the entire second half. He does a ton of good things without the ball in his hands. He plays unselfishly (perhaps to a fault) and can hit open shots.

I get we are lacking talent, and Patterson should absolutely be in the rotation. But there should have been some tough conversations at this point, and we should have seen his tendencies change and no more dribbling the air out of the ball in February and still getting 35 minutes.

This is so stupidly obvious; I must be missing something. Please criticize my take and tell me why I'm wrong.

You aren't wrong.

Patterson accounts for a lot of bad possessions that don't show up in his personal stats. That a coach cannot see that is astounding. He does some good things as well but he is a 15-20 minute player- not 35 minutes.
Going into the game today Patterson has the worst plus minus on the team at -39. Asuma is the best on the team at +21

Gophers are 3-7. Garcia sits nearly all first half and Asuma doesn’t see the floor in the second half after an 8 point first half. Ben coach like you have nothing to lose.

That is not it.

They are more talented than we are- as is every team in the league. It is a question of whether they hit their shots- today they hit them.
