Official SEC Cham...I mean CFP Championship Game Thread.

Have heard the it was brutal, glad I missed it.
I thought it was a really good game. Georgia and Alabama have a ton of talent on both sides of the ball. The defenses were pretty dominant but I don't think offenses looked sloppy. I thought the playcalling was odd at times but there were athletes all over the field. We got to see some weird drama with the fumble.

Recommend having an actual half time show next year. Just awful this year. Who even watches music videos anymore?
Yeah, that was very strange. It kind of reminded me of when the NFL booked Sheryl Crow to perform at halftime of the AFC championship game in Pittsburgh. Just bizarre booking.

I remember the Steelers were getting their asses kicked by the Patriots and she walks out and says "How ya feeling, Pittsburgh?" and about 5,000 middle fingers get thrown in the air.

Was referring to the halftime show. Watched most of the game from about the middle of the 2nd quarter on. 2nd half was very entertaining. Williams going down was a massive loss for Alabama and really changed the flow of the game.

Oh gotcha. Yeah, it was weird.

Williams going down really changed Alabama. Bryce Young is an impressive QB and I know he struggled a bit at the end, but he didn't have any many options. If that Georgia defense doesn't have to worry about you beating them deep, I'm not sure how any QB would do.

Glad I watched it.
Glad Alabama lost.
I'm agnostic to Georgia, but nice to see some "new" blood.

Did not even tune in for one minute.

Why do I care about the SEC Championship game Part 2? I don't.

They really need to rig it up so that one side of the bracket is teams from the (Deep) South, and the other side is teams from the rest of the country. Sorry, but that's how you get more people to care about that game.

I will never believe that you are a true national champion without even winning your own conference.
Funny thing is, people were thinking it would maybe be Alabama still sneaking in at #4 after losing to Georgia in the SEC champ game ... then whoops, somehow Georgia manages to lose that game. Funny how that happened!

I'm not disagreeing with you but do you feel the same way about basketball?
I know you’re responding to someone else but…

Not as much because of the nature and history of the of the game.

But no I do not consider the national champion in basketball the best team. (Which is a different question I suppose)

If there is playoff expansion I hope to god they don’t have more than 4 at larges. What makes college football great is the regular season. The more at larges there are the more it diminishes the regular season.

you could expand the playoff to 12 and make the regular season more important if you did it right. Or you could expand to 12 and ruin college football.

That's essentially how it was for the BCS Semis and the result was blow outs, so maybe more eyeballs at the beginning but by half time viewers turning off massively.

I fell asleep anyway last night, but my TV was on so I guess ESPN would still get rating credit for that.

Enjoyed the game, but came here to post these two things:
  1. I noticed both Saban and Smart led their teams out the tunnels. What a couple of "Me-First" frauds.
  2. I also saw multiple kickoffs being fair caught, including the very first of the game. Baffling how coaches who teach such a disastrous strategy could've gotten teams to the NC game.

And they didn’t even try to block punts or return them. Mostly fair catches.

and Saban settled for field goals because he was playing not to lose

Did you see what happened to Michigan against Georgia? The two best teams played each other for the championship. End of story and exactly as it should be.

I didn't, however, see multiple catchable punts allowed to fall to the ground and roll 15 yards backwards.

Yes, and they did I agree.

So are you upset almost every year when the two overall best NFL teams don't make it to the Super Bowl?

NFL gets it correct over college, as it does in some other places.

Yeah, that all makes sense and I completely agree with you about the playoffs. I was one of those people who didn't want any playoff at all. I was cool with a national championship game (best two) but IMO once college football moved to a 4 team playoff, it became more like the NFL/MLB/NBA/NCAAB.

I just think if you're going to have a playoff then this stuff is going to happen and like other playoffs, you just kind of live with it. The day they started the 4 team playoff, IMO, diminished the sanctity of the conference championship just like divisions and then the Wild Card did in baseball.

I know you asked someone else, but I'm not upset when lesser teams make the Super Bowl. However, I also don't point to the seasons where the best two teams play each other in the Super Bowl as proof that system isn't correct.

Once you build a playoff, the best case scenario, IMO, is to eventually have the best teams battle it out for the championship. This year, I actually think it worked perfectly. We keep hearing about how the UCF's/Boise's of the world just needed their shot, and Cinci looked pretty overmatched against Alabama. It was also a year where Michigan looked like they might belong and we found out pretty quickly that they did not.

Georgia sure looked like the best team all year and they lost to Alabama in another relatively modern invention (conference championship game). Those conference championship games do devalue the regular season games a bit.

I just think college football from its inception to 2013 was never about the best team winning the national championship. It was the most deserving team.

before the BCS it was purely a vote of who had the best season.

post BCS it essentially was a vote of top two best seasons and let them play it out.

college football started to die in 2002 when Nebraska didn’t win the big 12 north. Gave up 63 in the last game they played yet somehow went to the national title game anyways.

1 loss Oregon should’ve gone before Nebraska
2 loss big 12 champ Colorado who just beat Nebraska in a blowout should’ve gone

What is really needed is objective criteria for getting in. If you expand to 12 but don’t have auto bids for at least 6 conference champs…it’s going to be 6 SEC, 3 big ten, and 3 randoms.

that makes the SEC not worth watching in the regular season.
that makes some of the big ten not worth watching

I hope they don’t kill the golden goose

It isn't settling for field goals it is playing for field goals....big difference. Apparently Fleck likes to play for field goals and doesn't even try to score TDs.

Bama also didn't make an effort to score with only a few seconds left before halftime..... :)

For sure:
Bama throws a bubble on 3rd and 3 on their second drive of the game and has to punt
Georgia QB never throws a ball into the end zone on their first scoring drive
Bama second field goal drive they throw it short of the sticks on 3rd and 6
Georgia second field goal drive Georgia throws it short of the sticks on 3rd down and then kicks field goal

I get it though. When Minnesota throws it short of the sticks it’s because they’re trying to get a field goal. If Bama and Georgia do it they are playing for a touchdown but just not succeeding.

Sums up the in game thread logic perfectly....and sometimes the post game logic too for some fans.

Kind of like when you have a run game averaging 5 yards or so a carry but if you call a running play on 3rd and short then you are not trying to score.

I don’t know. I don’t find Georgia that unlikable
I actually don’t find Alabama that unlikable either

Yea its always so fun to play in or watch a league where all the best players are on one or two teams.

Why on earth would anyone even watch 90% of Alabama's games?

I am not sure. I watched all or parts of 5 Alabama games this year and they were 3-2 in those games
One of the losses was to a Texas A&M who barely beat a Colorado team that was blown out by a Minnesota team that lost to bowling green.
one of the games was a game they should’ve lost to a 6-7 auburn team that lost to a 7-6 Penn state team.

for Georgia I watched all of parts of 3 games this year and they were 2-1

If you’re looking for a game where all games are competitive…college football isn’t the place to look. Never has been.

I would usually agree, but they were the best two teams and it was a good game. So in this case it was the appropriate result and the most entertaining.
