***OFFICIAL PURDUE AT MINNESOTA IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

I just don't know how Ben watched anything on Patterson and thought "yup, he can play in the big 10".

Stuff like that is why he's not fit to be a coach. Forget the actual coaching part of things. But he cant even baseline talent evaluate that any schmuck on their couch can do
Well, to be fair, Ben is consulting the tarot cards for advice.

Johnson takes what he can get. It's not like he's a good enough recruiter to have options.

Penn State ran this Purdue team outta the building and we can't keep it within fucking 20? Only good thing about being this inept is we won't make the B1G tournament and we can fire him at 3:00 on Sunday, March 9th after we lose to Rutgers.

The more they lose, the quicker we can move on. This season is already completely lost.

From a former season ticket holder, this is by far the least interested I’ve ever been in the Gophers and college basketball in general.
That's why it's such a shame they haven't pulled the plug. As a fan, you are almost forced to root for them to lose now. A few meaningless wins is like the worst possible outcome.

Coyle can't possibly let Johnson finish the season, can he?

I disagree with this take. If we win enough to make the NCAA, they won't be meaningless wins (and, with how bad our resume is so far, we'd have to go on a pretty amazing run). Short of that, no amount on meaningful wins will bring Johnson back. Coyle put the coach and fans on notice that that washis expectation when he told mentioned that he texted his wife about how much he wants us in the tournament (which bizarrely is one of the most coherent messages he has ever delivered).

I have to stop you right there. There's is absolutely zero chance of that at this point. None. And I don't trust Coyle to do anything if by some chance they stumble their way to 6-7 B1G wins.
Far be it from me to have faith in Coyles decision making, I think he's get this one right. And if he doesn't, that's a coyle problem, not a Johnson one. Kind of like the scene in the office when Pam said something to the effect of "when a 12 year old crashes a car, you don't blame the kid. You blame the adult who gave them the keys and said 'just drive'"

And their 2nd yr coach did not embrace the suck...

It's coaching malpractice that Asuma and Edmonds don't start and that Asuma doesn't play 30 minutes.
Correct. He's a terrible coach. Patterson scored 14 tonight but he is not a good ball player. Nothing happens in a team sense when he is on the floor. Frank Mitchell just doesn't belong on a Big Ten basketball court.

I assume that Ben watched Patterson and F Mitchell out muscle guys in small conferences and thought it would translate. Here, in the Big Ten, all they are is slow guys that can't keep up.

I had this same thought two (2) years ago. I share in your apathy, sir.

If you watched to the end, when the Boilers were celebrating, hundreds of the fans were Purdue fans.
That's just the B1G revenue sharing plan.

Someone at Halftime suggested Gopher fans might have a chance to storm the court. If they were referring to tackling Coyle and duct-taping him to one of the backboards, I would've supported this decision.

I love and follow the gophers, but not so much the rest of college bball. My question therefore is: is it common in college bball to fire a coach mid-season? Really curious.

That is telling, he brought in Cooper also with about the same results. Guy handling the ball is so important. You can forget it with Patterson in that position. They aren't going to win anymore games.

I actually think Cooper is the prime example of how much an abomination CBJ is as a coach.

Cooper leaves to go to SCar where he starts and plays big minutes on a tournament team. His counting stats all are down (pts reb ast stl) but if you notice he's actually a better player. Shooting % skyrockets, turnovers way down, defensive stats way up. It's because CBJ has 0 idea how to coach an offense or defense. He just puts 5 guys out there 37 minutes a night and let's them do whatever they want like it's the nba. No structure at all. A good coach maximizes a guys strengths and hides weaknesses. CBJ closes his eyes and hopes terrible shots fall for us and great shots don't fall for the other team. Thus why we beat NW MISS ST Baptist but get destroyed by anyone ranked.

The problem last night was defense - the offensive efficiency was actually good enough to win most games. Specifically, the gophers are struggling with 3P defense in the first 3 conference games.
