***OFFICIAL ORAL ROBERTS VS MINNESOTA IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

With our depth & size at guard we may not be able to replicate Noah Richardson’s “40 minutes of hell” but “40 minutes of in-your-jock defense” is possible.

Betts will not be in the 10 man rotation once we have everyone healthy.
I think Betts will be playing only against teams with two big wings because Odukale and Betts are the only two big wings we have that are big enough to defend that situation.
Otherwise Betts will wait until next season to play.

Had a chance to meet the bball players as they waited in line to enter a gopher football game. Fully changed my attitude toward everything Ben. Hope for the best the season!!!
Can you expand on what it was they did or said that changed your attitude?

There was a play where Betts got the ball on the wing. Odukale cut on the weakside to the hoop, and Betts didn't see him.

He was wide open for about five seconds, jumping up and down, pleading for the pass, but Betts never recognized what was happening. Femi's facial expression as Betts passed it back to the top of the key had me in tears (every hooper knows that pain).

Most guys in the Lifetime Fitness open gym don't miss that pass.

Betts has some nice physical tools but little sense of the game and where he or his teammates should be.

It's hard to get away with that if you're not making up for it elsewhere with hustle, defense, rebounding, etc.

It was nice seeing him get an "and1" and a corner 3-pointer. The kid is bursting with potential! He just needs to see the floor a bit better.

I'm on Team Isaac for eventally being the primary PG so that Mitchell can concentrate on stroking it from 3. Really like those 2 together. It's early, but I'm not sold on Patterson over the other options. ... a little out of shape?
Totally agree. If Isaac is starting at PG and Mitchel is shooting 3s we are in a good spot.

Patterson is underwhelming at this point

I saw that too. Betts has a looooong way to go.

Cochran is a tank.

I'd argue strength and the ability to move laterally is far more important.

Cochran was the MAC DPOY and can guard multiple positions. Betts has proven nothing
If the wing being defended is off the ball until he receives a pass near the basket, the defender needs verticality, not strength and quickness. But I understand that strength and quickness is preferred if the wing does not properly use his off-the-ball offensive manueverabilty.

In time I think Asuma starts but based on the two exhibition games, didn't get a to see the OR game, he has some breakdowns on defense that need to be corrected before he is deemed a starter. He's got good size, quickness, see's the floor, and a pretty good shooter for a freshman. He's going to be hard to keep around in the world of NIL.

I would bet that he didn't guard any 6'8" BigTen calibre wings.

I still have mine. Last night, getting off the couch and making my way to the game seemed more like a chore than anything else. It was fun once I got there, but I agree the schedule is a joke, and the energy of the Ben Johnson era is completely non-existent.

This team needs Mitchell back in the worst way. Rebounding is terrible.
Oh oh 😯

Could someone that knows, please post the phonetic spelling of Asuma, Odukale, and Lu'cye?

How many 6'8""Big Ten caliber wings" are there to even worry about?

Most teams play with 3 guards these days anyways.

how that went in my imagination:

Players - hey, what's your name?

Spaulding - call me Spaulding.

Players - the guy from Gopher Hole that's always ripping the coach?

Spaulding - aaah......no, that's some other guy........excuse me, I have to go to the bathroom......

Not Illinois who are overloaded with bigs.
7-1,6-10,6-10,6-9,6-9,
6-8,6-7,6-6,6-6,6-6.

Bigs aren't wings? What's your point?

Nevermind I'm confused this is a pointless arguement haha

Illinois has ten players who are 6-6 or taller.
If five are bigs, the other five are most likely wings who are
6-6,6-7 or 6-8.
Try to guard them with our wings who are 6-2 and 6-3 (except for Odukale and Betts)

Curious for more details. What specifically did you think and why the change? I.e. what did the players say that brought that about?
