***OFFICIAL NORTH TEXAS AT MINNESOTA IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

He better be ready. Any coach that is worth his salt is going to look at the tape from last night and follow that defensive script. Double Garcia and pressure our slow guards out high. Outside of Asuma, who is green as the grass yet, we have nobody that can beat the pressure off the bounce and make the defense pay for the over play. Worse Garcia, good as he is (we would be unbelievably bad if he hadn't stayed)- doesn't pass the ball much so he is great fun to double team.
Mike Mitchell has some quickness so when he is back that will help the guard play a lot. The other X factor is what we get from Tyler Cochran when he returns in December.

But yeah....they are going to need Asuma to figure things out quickly and hopefully they can figure out why they can't seem to make any shots all the sudden after looking pretty good at shooting to start the year.

Will be interesting to see how they respond to the loss.

I am likely just expecting too much of him, as he is a great scorer, but he really cannot / does not pass the ball.

He's averaging 26 pts and 1 assist through the first 3 games.

The other 8-9 guys may not be great players, but I know we will not win games with Garcia going isolation all night.

Garcia is not a selfish guy but his coach and team mates are going to turn him into Kris Humphreys with similar results if this persists. This is on the coach.

Sounds like you were at or saw the game last night.....what happened to Fox? He is usually a very aggressive player but no shot attempts and only 14 minutes seems odd for him.

The shots they took (6-23 on 3s) were largely bad shots taken in late shot clock situations. They will shoot better if there is an offensive scheme that creates openings.

The players played really hard. I can't fault the effort. This is a combo of coaching and ability.

If Cochran is Michael Jordan we'll finish .500 in the Big Ten.

I think I said this last year but it's true again. I don't think I've cared less than I do right now. Half the time I forget they're even playing.

I was. I gave up my 35 year plus run of season tickets, because of the crap product, but I will go to a few games. Last night I asked for the cheapest tickets in the house and then I went and sat 20 rows up center court- so that is the upside of failure!

Fox was hustling as usual but we had no scheme going and North Texas was quick to the spot to cover him. Fox as you know, gets his buckets off of cuts to the basket and hustle but they had our guards so shut down that there were just no passing lanes. Our guards were operating 25 feet from the basket. I will say this, Fox got absolutely screwed by a couple of ref calls. The refs were off the charts bad last night. In addition to a couple of calls on Fox they missed two of the most obvious traveling calls I have ever seen and they let the game get out of control in a lot of ways. While they weren't the reason we lost they were a part of the disastrous scene last night.

Investing in this particular team is really tough because if they don't look like they are going to play well then really it is just a collection of guys who will be gone next year playing for a coach who will get fired either during or right after the season.

Last year they were entertaining. I doubt that happens this year. They will play hard. There is very little Big Ten ability out there outside of Garcia.

I don't think a move happens in season. The roster is a non issue because regardless of who the coach is next year they are going to have to rebuild basically the entire team.
Depending on how this season ends up and if it ends up badly the question that should be asked is why give Ben Johnson another chance to rebuild it?

Really we are talking about taking better shots……..this has been a problem since BJ was hired, he has a lack of offensive identity which is created by players who should be playing at mid-majors. Gotta start paying more, it is what it is. Minnesota fans shouldn’t be surprised at all, the U very seldomly pushes to the edge. The last time was with Gangelhof taking tests for kids…….but we WON

College sports is stinky and if you are not willing to get on board then you will have a team like the current Gophers

I am afraid that this team doesn’t have the ability to GET better shots. They can’t create separation.

Going to take more than just being competitive in conference games for Johnson to save his job. He needs a strong conference showing this year.

An early season loss like this doesn't necessarily assure doom and gloom but it certainly isn't a good sign. Need to get everyone healthy and gel before conference games start. With our non-conf schedule it was always going to take a good showing in conference for us to make the tournament. This loss doesn't change that but it certainly doesn't help our cause.
Ben has had all summer and fall to get these well experienced chaps to gel and execute. He is utterly failing to provide any game plan and execution for guys who know what they are doing. This is entirely on Ben. Coyle had better be looking at the short list right now because Ben has shown us his final hand in the deck. My expectations, as small as they were, have been ended with last night's debacle. Flip this thing over because it's done.

Ben should be fired today. Let the assistants try their luck. Let Thorson be head coach for a few months. The complete crap show that Ben orchestrated last night should get him fired.

It wouldn't even be a question, there is no way Coyle can let him start over from scratch again and try to build the majority of a roster for the 3rd time in 5 years.

Since the exhibition games, I could tell this team was going to be challenged offensively for stretches. But man, I did not expect this.

My biggest frustrations with Ben:

Ten seniors are on the team, most of them guards. The lack of poise and purpose offensively is baffling. How can guys playing at this level for so long have zero concept of moving without the ball?

Ben's first team, with Willis, Loewe, Stephens, and Battle, wasn't overly athletic, but they consistently ran good sets. The issue with that team was depth and getting worn down as the season progressed (and no frontcourt).

Ben's worst year was Year 2 with Talon Cooper running PG, who was slow and consistently struggled to get the team into the offense. It seems like playing Patterson at PG is reverting to this. Why aren't you playing with tempo!?

There'd be 10 seconds left on the shot clock before any semblance of actual offense the entire first half.

And what is with Ben Johnson's guard backing down defenders? It doesn't f**** work, ever! It kills the flow, everybody ball watches, and it either ends in a turnover, a bad shot, or a bobbled dribble that leads to a frantic pass out the perimeter to reset the offense and an eventual desperation shot to beat the shot clock.

I can't fathom how a 4th-year coach with his most experienced roster can look like this.

Not only that, this team is ALL gone after the season, so what are we even buying into? It just feels pointless and hopeless. I can't believe this is the team I've loved all my life who once had just a fantastic following in this town. It's so disgusting what they've done. I can't believe anyone would spend a cent on this. I made the mistake of paying $13 for a month of BTN+. Worst purchase of my life.

And I bought the Color Me Badd CD...
