Let's hope we come out strong like we have the last two games. These guys will likely be more difficult than the first two games. It's the triumphant return of national title winning player Saul Smith to the Gopher bench tonight.

Here's to Saul... :drink:

Nice toast Dr. D.

I agree that TNS will be a greater test as they seem to have a couple of bigs with skills. It may help us foresee how our bigs will cope with the Plumlee family. I'd love to see Walker and Trevor move forward tonight.

Some excerpts from the Tennessee State Preview (full link in signature) at LNH are below -- Covington is legit. Struggled in his first game (fouled out in 19 minutes 2/12 shooting) but was his regular self in game two. I'd put Rodney on him and let Williams show scouts what he can do defensively against a tall, versatile kid like Covington.

They don't shoot the trey a lot, but Covington and a couple guys off the bench can hit.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

#33 Robert Covington (17.8 ppg, 7.9 rpg in 2011-12) is a long and versatile 6’9” senior forward from the Chicago area and a threat from anywhere on the floor, with or without the ball. He’s a great shooter, defender and rebounder who is a cut above anyone Minnesota has seen so far this season.

Covington was very efficient with the ball a year ago and shot extremely well both inside the arc (57.0%) and behind it (65/145 for 44.8%). Defending Covington will be a nice test for Rodney Williams and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see these two going up against each other again next July in the NBA’s summer league.

Strong point guard #2 Patrick Miller (10.8 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 3.6 apg) stands 6’1”, 189 pounds and has been credited with a total of 19 assists in the Tigers’ first two games. Prior to this year, Miller has shot infrequently and poorly from 3-point range (41/139 for 29.5%; 2.2 3FA/game), but has taken 9 attempts behind the arc already this year and made 3.

Miller is a better scorer when he gets close to the bucket and is a fairly strong guard who does draw contact. Minnesota would prefer the junior to continue shooting out on the perimeter as compared to him dishing to Covington or other open Tigers.

#1 Kellen Thornton (9.1 ppg, 4.5 rpg) played at Hillcrest (Ill.) and Brewster Academy (N.H.) in high school and began his college days at Illinois State. Now a senior and a big 6’8”, 243 pounds, Thornton is another good scoring option and a solid rebounder.

Others to mention:

Senior guard #45 Jordan Cyphers (8.0 ppg; 36.4% 3FG) started out at Utah before transferring two years ago. He’ll likely come off the bench looking to fire away from long range.
#3 Kharon Butcher (1.9 ppg) is another reserve who is willing to try from 3-point range. He only went 8/28 3FG for 28.6% as a freshman, but he can hit from outside.
Redshirt sophomore #4 M.J. Rhett (3.9 ppg, 4.5 rpg) has added size to his 6’8” frame and helps inside with rebounding,

What the hell? Is everyone at the game at Williams Arena? No one in the Chatroom yet, so if the pups are at Williams, kudos to ya all.

Nice way to end the half. Go from up 10 with 2:55 to play to up 18 by half.

Still up 20 but we've looked like poop recently. Jump shooting is not really our strength, I'd say.

I have a couple things on my mind.

I love the way Williams, and the Hollins bros are looking! They have great chemistry and stabilize the team.

That being said... Osenieks is flat out terrible. Missing wide open layups, air balling wide open jump shots, getting owned in the post, etc... Why he gets PT doesn't make sense to me.

The 2nd unit isn't stable at all! Welch btw looks terrible. You better hope they don't get equal Pt as the starters in the Bahamas or it will be blowout city.

I agree that you simply can't put Mo/Oto/Julian/Mav all on the court at the same time and made that point after the last game. I think the Gophers have looked very good defensively, but still worried about some of the open looks from 3 they give up on occasion...those are going to haunt them against a better team.

This Tenn State went to BYU and lead for most of the first half, so for the Gophers to put them away so convincingly is a good sign. On a related note, Toledo went to UNI the other night and took them to overtime.

Tubby better not do the hockey subs against Duke or in Big Ten play. That's all I have to say.

He doesnt understand that reserves aren't supposed to play as much as starters. 2 reserves is the most there should be out on the floor at once.

Agree with the takes so far - I'll just add that Joel Coleman needs to make a few jump shots or his game will go down the tubes in the Big Ten, and of course against Duke. Also, Moe has to make at least 50% of his FT's. If not, he will not be a force for this team, which he could be.

Wow, a lot of pissing and moaning in this thread for what looks like a dominant win (I missed the game so that's all I can go off of).

So much fail in this post.

It was not as bad as some of negative nancies are saying. all they look for are things to bitch about, instead of positives. But, what do we expect from the GH'ers who only rode the bench in their high school days.

Defense was excellent tonight, but only the scorebook counts. :banghead:

First time I'll agree with one of these posts of yours. Holy crap people, they just destroyed a team for the third game in a row. They beat the zone consistently and had a decent shooting night. Tubby is experimenting with lineups and substitutions because the other teams are overwhelmed. You want our starters getting hurt playing 35 minutes in these games?

Who started the game? I'm guessing ESPN had the starters wrong? According to the boxscore they are saying the starters were:

PG: Andre
SG: Welch
SF: Austin
PF: Ingram
C: Trevor

Same as the first two games.

MTG - let's see if both can improve - 2 Q marks in my mind for this team to be very good.

Did Williams have as good of game as the stats say?

Most of his points were on dunks, but he played great D and a solid game all around. Basically took an NBA prospect completely out of the game.

Exactly what high school bench players do not understand.

Missing 3 ft's in a row by Big Moe - how is that not a mistake(s) .. Joel Coleman not having confidence to make an open jumper? He was like 0 -4 in the first half. Can that continue in conference play? That's all I'm saying - they need to improve or they could be liabilities .. Yes the team played solid D. That's great - I'm not saying anything that other folks here have been saying for quite some time, regarding FT's and hitting open jumpers.

 Never heard of them.
