ESPN: Big Ten awards race tracker: Week 5

Nagurski-Woodson Defensive Player of the Year

1. Michael Mauti, LB, Penn State: The Nittany Lions defense is playing really well, and Mauti is its leader. He's second in the league in tackles and has to be pretty close to first in effort.

2. Kawann Short, DT, Purdue: Short drops a spot simply because he didn't play last week. He'll face a dangerous passing offense versus Marshall this week but will really make his bones in league play.

3. D.L. Wilhite, DE, Minnesota: Wilhite leads the league in sacks with 4.5, and with an extra tackle for loss, he's second in that category as well. He's a big key to a vastly improved Gophers pass rush.

Not exactly sure why but I sort of laughed out loud to myself when I read the Gophers have the longest active B1G winning streak. I had to look around to see if anyone heard me.

Okay, I don't care who the competition is, that's impressive.

Has Jonah Pirsig played yet? I see him listed as back up at RG, but has he actually played yet? Anyone?

I've been keeping a pretty close eye on the OL each game, and I haven't yet noticed him out there. I don't want to run anyone down, but it's a little disconcerting to me that neither of the McAvoy twins are on the 2-deeps, especially given the injury situation. They are the only non-true freshmen, non-injured offensive linemen not on the 2-deep.

Isn't it amazing...during the summer and fall camp most observers thought the O-Line was the deepest group on this team and were extremely concerned about the WR group. Now both units have sustained injuries and even with that the WR's are fine and the OL looks almost frighteningly thin.

And no, to my knowledge Pirsig has NOT played yet.

Pirsig has not played and will not play this year. He needs a good two years to grow into that body and gain some strength. I believe he would get his ass kicked if he played this year.

My wife (gopherfaith) just called an said her Delta flight to Cedar Rapids is "infested" with Hogeye fans. Nice that they were abale find jobs here.

He unfortunately will play if there are enough injuries...so just like Max, lets hope that the rest of the O-line stays healthy so he doesn't need to play.

O-line definitely looking dicey with Tommy Olson going down now, hopefully he is good to go after the bye week. Not totally ready to say the recieving core is fine just yet. We have not seen them up against a quality defense to date, and will be interesting to see if they can get separation against Big Ten DB's the same way they have against the likes of UNLV, WMU, and UNH.

Really? Have you told coach Kill this? He must not have got the word because he is on the two deep list. I hope you're right and he doesn't play but he may have to play if we have more injuries. Coach Kill has made it clear that if has to burn a red shirt he will.

Marcus: Gophers football at Iowa: 5 keys for the Gophers

GAME PREDICTION

The Gophers are looking to go 5-0 for the first time since 2004. The Hawkeyes are trying to avoid falling below .500 after previous losses to Iowa State and Central Michigan. The programs appear to be going in different directions, but Iowa is still favored by 7-1/2 points. That's bulletin-board material. Gophers 21-17.

BIG TEN PREDICTION

My preseason prediction was for the Gophers to finish 5-7. I had them winning three nonconference games. I also had them losing at Iowa in the Big Ten opener. But a 5-0 start now seems realistic with Iowa having a down year. Then there will be four decent opportunities (at home against Northwestern and Purdue and on the road against Wisconsin and Illinois) to win a couple more games, especially if Minnesota's defense remains solid. I'll flip the previous record prediction. Gophers will go 7-5.

I don't know how much stock I'd put in the depth charts teams put out. A.J. Barker still isn't even listed at WR.

the players are tweeting so many bad things about Iowa right after landing it is hilarious
