***OFFICIAL MINNESOTA AT NORTHWESTERN IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

SS, don't want to start a new thread, but wondered what your impression of Medved and team is thus far?
Love him. I was banging the drum for him after they let go of Richard.

As others have said, it's fun to watch a team (whatever its talent level) where the ball doesn't stick. It moves, players cut, and Gophers rarely have a possession where it ends with a guard pounding the ball into the ground or just dribbling around before jacking up a bad shot at the end of the shot clock. I've had enough of that after the last 5-6 seasons.

Can't wait to see what he does when he gets more talent and if he can get the key guys to stick around for a few seasons.

I’m in shock. After all these years of watching our awful offenses and seeing other teams back-door cut and make the extra passes and scheme great plays I thought this would never happen here. IMO this is the best coaching I have seen of a Gophers team in a very very long time. Of course, there are two main parts of being a great coach. The other part is getting great talent on the floor. If Niko can somehow do that in this crazy NIL world, we will really have something!

Yeah. There was one possession where we had a guy wide open under the basket for a layup. There wasn't a defender within 8-10 feet of him. Don't think I have ever seen that before.

Games like this give me hope for this era. The way they play, cut, pass, defend, etc.

This team lacks talent, size and depth. But they are enjoyable to watch.
Especially the way they move the ball. We have a lot of really nice motion in our half-court, which was rarely seen during the Ben days. The improvement so far this season has really been impressive. On the downside, our lack of depth is a huge issue.

Thing that stood out to me the most: the last 60 seconds that seemed an eternity, this is where past gophers teams would have failed, pitino jr. and johnson alike

Teams of old, invariably:
  • bungle one of those crucial in-bounds passes
  • clank two FT in a row (maybe even fail to hit the rim on one)
  • make boneheaded turnover under trap pressure
  • violate 5-sec rule inbounds
  • violate 10-sec rule failing to get half court
  • OR…..Misc. take your personal favorite pick of the endless, moronic bizarre methods we’ve employed to piss games away in final seconds over the years
Last 60 today: we executed the end game correctly. We hit our FTs. Durkin and Tyson both showing maturity and poise to call timeouts when necessary. We properly defended each drive as time whittled down (mostly), with players knowing their assignments, acting in sync and keeping awareness of clock, fouls, score etc. Good job Medved.

*goddamn…..so grove actually has that dog in him after all….make no mistake it’s a binary equation.
And we attacked the press!

I think we need to upgrade the post game meal from a random gas station in Wisconsin...

Watched late last night after we got home. Fun game to watch. Enjoyable style of BB. The 3 Cade hit near the end was ridiculous.
As others have said, going to have some rough nights with big, athletic teams, but love watching this style of basketball.
I think Craig Ehlo was guarding Cade on that shot!

Gotta admit that was a well coached team on the floor yesterday. Very well coached.

Tough duty when you're soundly out-talented by effing Northwestern, but team play overcame that talent deficit, and it's not like Collins is a poor coach.

I'm 10 percent of the way to changing my opinion of the Medved hire.

I doubt we'll see that level of play from Reynolds again, but he was the player of the game IMO.

Agree with your take on Reynolds. He did have a great game. That is the type of play he needs to bring to every game. His problem is consistency. Hope his play against Northwestern carries over to Iowa on Tuesday.

Still a long ways to go for this program just to get back to mediocrity but last night's game was the first one (1) in about ten (10) years where I thought to myself, "we've actually got something good happening here".

Throw a guy like a Jerry Holman in the middle of this group and we'd have even more wide open looks from 3 than we already do. Our offensive scheme is highly efficient when supported by adequate execution from the players.

I wasn't overly thrilled with the Medved hire, either, but the dude can coach basketball...I'm sure of that. Now we just need to raise his grocery allowance.

Who did you want? Just curious.

Unrealistic candidates.
Fair enough. I don't follow coaches closely enough to know up and coming names or realistic options.

I thought Niko checked the right boxes. History of improvement, getting teams to the NCAAs with consistency, player development at a lower program, local and young (meaning they'll be here for awhile if successful)

I'm thoroughly enjoying being proven wrong. It's not the first time, certainly not the last.

It is infinitely more fun as a player to play in that kind of offense. Because if you put in the work and execute, you'll get touches to score or assist. It keeps everyone engaged at all times and it makes the defense respond to every player on the floor for 25-30 seconds a crack. Backdoor cuts can be a morale killer.

I think Coyle has already said he's allocating some more $$...

I'd push back a little on this point. We are not super physically gifted, but to be fair we are missing the starting PG, starting C and presumed 7th man, if we add that three to the talent pool we would be obviously better in that department.

I guess my comment more leads to the point that I do think Niko is good at identifying players and that fit his system, just will need some health luck in the future with a limited budget compared to others.

I checked the net rankings and they have the gophers 2-3 for quad 2 games. Shouldn’t the Northwestern win be quad 1 since it was an away game and they were ranked #74 prior to the game. Quad 1 away games include 1-75. Am I missing something?

Its a fluid ranking. So yes while they were 74th at the time, the loss pushed them to 83rd. Its based off the current rankings not what they were at the time of the game.
