***OFFICIAL GOPHERS VS ST JOHN'S IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

Eliason scored 5 points for St. John's on the technical.
Scored another one on the fouled 3 pointer.

Is there a 3rd place game? Gotta hope Gonzaga loses and we get a chance to beat them.

We won't beat Gonzaga. I'll take a win over Georgia, who will probably above .500 in the brutal SEC.

Brilliant move by Pitino in benching Mason for the last few minutes.

I honestly have no idea why I support this embarrassment of a team.

With this loss, they'll have to go 11-7 in the Big Ten or better I would think.

We can still have a 11-2 non-conference season. A 21-10 B1G team is getting in. 9-9 is probably on the wrong side of the bubble though.

I don't think we're as bad as we were in the last half of this game, if only because nobody, anywhere is that bad. This was sloppy and uninspired - going far beyond just looking tired. This was the worst I've seen the team look in a long time, and this was a game they NEEDED for March. What the hell was Mason doing on the bench?

Smh. Wonder why they didn't hire you instead?

Did I ever say that I could coach better than Pitino? NO! It's pathetic that you think our coaching staff is above criticism. This is why gopher bball will always be mediocre because of fans like you.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I've seen D2 centers with more game than Elliot. He just doesn't belong here. Mo is a D1 player but not a very complete one. It's hard to win with bigs this poor. They did alright last year through great effort from the other positions, but with the guards sucking right now, the whole thing is a hot mess.

Bad Game. Where is the leadership from Hollins! Wow.... this guy is disappointing me. The TO's where unacceptable, St. John's capitalized big time on those!

Not at all. I just think it's a little ridiculous to give up on the season, fire the coach, and boycott the school after a bad 10 minutes of basketball.

St Johns is not a great team but they are probably more athletic than any team in the Big Ten. A team like that gives us trouble because they snuff us out under the bucket and they foil our ability to run and press. We did fine while we were hitting jumpers- once that stopped they are just way more athletic than we are. We are going to have to have way better guard play (outside of Mason who was great) and I'm confident it will happen. Carlos is not a senior leader but he's not much of a downgrade from Austin. Before it's all over this should be a better team than last year. They are learning the hard way though.

The turning point of this ballgame, by the way, was Elliot blowing his cool. Six point possession for SJ and we never got it going again. Add to that Andre may never have played a worse game in his life.

Yeah. That's exactly the problem.

We are that bad... the only guy that could do anything right today was Mason. And for some reason Pitino had him on the bench most of the 2nd half.

Just a real ugly game overall and really nobody played well for the Gophers except for Mason in the 1st half. Way too many bad unforced turnovers and a lot of them were at times when it seemed like we could have really put St. John's away. This is a game we should have won and probably should have won pretty handily by 10-15. I hope we don't put ourselves in a position where this one comes back to really hurt at the end of the year. Probably not gonna be a real happy Thanksgiving for the team tomorrow but gotta bounce back and not only get a win Friday but hopefully play a much better game. I thought the officiating tonight was pretty awful all around but the foul and technical call on EE that really gave St. John's some life were absolutely horrible.

I agree with this an with bad gopher's assessment of our center situation.

I have been thinking that Pitino should just play Mathieu regardless of multiple fouls in the first half, because when he sits him early, he never gets his game going again anyway. If that is how he's going to play coming back in the second half, might as well keep him in and risk him fouling out.

+1. There is enough of a sample size with Mathieu to prove this. And Mason is a far better back-up than Mav or Dre having to play PG.

Put this bad performance behind us and hit full stride on Friday. C'mon guys you are way better than what you showed us tonight!

Actually Joey King who is usually not a favorite of mine, really played well. He got himself in position in the second half and couldn't hit any of several good looks but otherwise he really played well.

My problem is they had no go to play, no slow it down, run a set play and get a good shot, they played out of control for most of the scoring drought. Even do an isolation, do something different to try and break the streak, it didn't happen.

+1. Joey is what he is. That's mostly good with 2 or 3 missed bunnies and at least one turnover on an outlet pass. But he was not the reason we lost.

You're right King was pretty solid especially in the 1st half the 2 pretty wide open looks he got inside and missed to start the 2nd half were really the only 2 plays I was real upset with him about.

I would not be surprised if Konate develops enough that he is taking a fair amount of Elliason's time by the end of the year. There are teams that EE can match up with okay be he is totally outmatched in a game like this one with athletes all over the floor. Walker- I'm actually confident that in Big Ten games where the ball gets valued and the possessions get slower- he will be a solid center for us, better than average.

One thought on Pitino-he is stubbornly sticking to the press and we aren't getting much out of it other than fouls. i wonder if there are certain athletic teams where he just has to give in an not press with this particular squad.

could be true but I would say the Gophers will be one of the least athletic teams in the B1G.

Ugh. If you don't think Mason should've played down the stretch, than you clearly don't know basketball. The problems for this team go beyond simply 1 bad half. Hollins is slow, not a leader, makes bad decisions, and Deandre also has some big issues to work out. Now that Mason keeps on proving himself, isn't it time to start him and make our two other guards prove they deserve to start and play in crunch time?
