***OFFICIAL GOPHERS VS PURDUE IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

I want to see comments from the BT (not likely) regarding the bad call on the fumble recovery near the goal... He took two steps with the ball before the ball came out. Terrible call even after the review which made that bad call even more blatant. The rules need to be changed - it was obvious it was a catch and a fumble. Let's see if there's a comment from the BT.

That was the most blatantly terrible call I've seen all year. Still can't believe that whole sequence between the Cobb fumble that wasn't, purdue fumble on the goal line, and then stopping the play as our guy is 70 yards down field.

It looked like a fumble to me. What did you see?

It looked to me like his elbow was down and then the ball came out. Did i see it wrong?

Not sure, I didn't see that but I was kinda pissed at that point so I didn't look too closely. The announcers didn't mention anything but that isn't a surprise. They claimed the ball was already coming out before the hit on the goal line that produced the fumble that was incorrectly called an incomplete pass. I'm not sure what the hell he was looking at there.

So much for the Purdue beat writer saying Purdue had the special teams edge... 52 yard field goal late in the 4th to take a one point lead...Minnesota Special teams is in a different class than Purdue's Mr. Beat writer.

That's what I saw too. They only replayed it once and I saw his arm hit the ground, then the ball popped out. (his arm that touched the ground was the arm that was holding the ball). I said it when the play happened but I wasn't surprised they didn't review it because the refs seemed to have something against the Gophers in the first half.

The ESPN post game write up mentioned that it looked like he was down too, so I'll stick with terrible call.

I think we might have gotten a break on that punt that we clobbered their punter on. Ref said it was tipped but the ball proceed to travel like 40 yards in a perfect spiral, so I doubt it was actually tipped.

Still wasn't enough of a makeup for all the calls we were jobbed out of.

I think that the ref near the punter 'heard' a tip of the ball .. one thing that we (watching on TV) will never hear.

Yep, looked like his arm - the one holding the ball - hit the ground, which popped the ball loose. Only one replay was shown from that conclusive angle, however, the few rest they showed just showed a stopped up pile with Cobb close to the ground, then the ball sitting on the ground.

As for the call they made where they fumbled at the 1...it's clear why they called that on an "incompletion" upon replay. What else were they supposed to call that made any sense? It was clearly a solid catch, 3 steps, then a fumble. It was also clear that our guy (Thompson?) picked it up cleanly and was running down the field. But since the play was called dead somewhere around the 50 yard line, they couldn't give him the ball down the field. It also wouldn't make much sense to give the Gophers the ball at the 1, since they clearly moved it far downfield. So they took the easy route - call it an incompletion and try to save their own stupid faces. It'll work...since the Gophers won the game.

The non-penalty on the missed blocked punt was most likely their way of trying to make up that sequence of total Gopher-screw. A third wrong to make it "right".

I was very surprised to see the refs provide quality spots on the last Purdue drive.

Step off the ledge guys, we look horrible. Good news is I think we are beating ourselves. Go into half, fix some stuff, come out and play lockdown D, pound the rock, and claw back into thus thing

I was at the game yesterday, and I knew it would be fun to come back and read this thread from start to finish. Voice of reason award goes to minibeaver. A few others also made the similar points in subsequent posts. Wow, what a game to be at! And yes, we were amazed at some of the officiating. The Cobb fumble was showed on the big screen multiple times. The ground obviously caused the fumble.

One minor gripe regarding the coaching staff was at the end of the first half. With over 2 minutes left, Purdue had a 3rd and goal and we did not call a time out. Instead of having a little over a minute with the final possession of the half, we could have had nearly two minutes.

And finally, the game saving play was the Purdue penalty on our failed 3rd down during the drive that lead to the game-winning FG.
