Official Gophers/Illinois Post Game Thread

@gophersnow: Tubby on Mbakwe and Austin Hollins sitting most of first half with foul trouble: "Looking back, I probably should have played them both."

What makes me mad is this happened a few games ago when Trevor picked up his 2nd early, we got down by 20 as he sat the entire half. Tubby dealt with this recently and still made the same decision, which he now says is the wrong decision.

Go Gophers!!

Again, I'm not saying it wasn't the wrong decision. Just that some of the same people complaining now would be complaining if either one picked up a 3rd foul in the first half.

No matter the decision, the last minute or so of the game was way worse than that. We were in position to win and didn't get it done....again.

Feel bad for Austin - he did some nice things, just barely stepped on that line.

The biggest thing I'd point to, again, would be roster utilization. Just odd. Really strange.

One thing I did like was the 5 players we had on the court at the end. Mbakwe, Hollins, Hollins, Williams and Ingram. Coleman was where he needed to be, on the bench. Coleman has been pathetic the last month or so.

Think Tubby can just petition the B1G to see if we can just "check" the ball at the top of the key next year instead of taking it out of bounds?

Good 2nd half and some good things but turnovers were really he killer. The posession were Illinois hit the tying 3 after we got 3 stops and a huge blocked shot by Rodney but we couldn't get control of the ball was the most upsetting to me. A lot of little things that could have changed this game besides the turnover issue, Mbakwe called for basket interference, Rodney called for a charge on what I felt was a block, the block call on Ingram which turns into a 3 point play for the Illini, and maybe a push that could have been called on Austin going out of bounds but probably the wrong place to go with the ball on the inbound anyway. if any of those go are way we either get the win or head to overtime. If we play the way we did for most of the 2nd half we can make some noise in the tournament, but if we play the way we did in the 1st half we could get run out of the building. I think Tubby learned a lesson today and he will be more willing to trust the guys not to pick up a 3rd fould especially when the opponent is on a big run. Hopefully the team will learn from today how important and big the little things can be. I think we will be a 9 or 10 seed and would like for us to see Colorado State as the opponent.

Anyone know why Wally wasn't on the bench?

Didn't notice that. Not a good sign IMO.

Didn't make the trip. He was sick.

Not that it's any consolation, but if you would have told me the Gophers would have lost by two to the Illini at the Big Ten Tourney back in early January (when both teams were riding high), I wouldn't have been that surprised or disappointed. What would have surprised me was they were the 8 and 9 seeds and both almost on the bubble.

If there is a first round match up, I'd love to see it vs Colorado State or Long Beach State. And would not be confident against either one. Would be fun to see Iverson bang it around.

I agree and I'm not saying I agree with the decision, but for every example of a player playing with two fouls in the first half and not fouling out, there's probably several examples of players who did end up fouling out. Some people will just criticize Tubby for anything and everything.

Some people will criticize Tubby no matter what. I will be consistent about my criticism. Do things that make sense. If you make good decisions and it still doesn't work, I will not be critical.

Zero chance of an LBSU match-up. We will be a 9-11 seed. They will be a 11-13 seed most likely. Colordo state could be a 6/11 or 7/10 match-up.

Did the Gophers have a "foul to give" as Paul was coming up the court before the buzzer beater? I only count 5 fouls in the 2nd half...Hmmmm? More fodder for Tubby Bashing.

No, the charge on Rodney with about 4 minutes left put Illinois into the bonus.

Would love to see Colorado State and would be very confident against them.

Play by play shows there were six fouls in the half already.

In retrospect, should have doubled Paul and forced someone else to beat us...The rest of the Illini were 8 for 40 (20%)...Paul was 65% 10-16....

I would agree with that you knew they wanted him to take that shot and I'm sure he's taken shots like that before, Paul had 25 points which was pretty much half of Illinois total points.

The people who would've complained about that would've been wrong to do so. There is no reason to arbitrarily foul your own players out of a half. Particularly with the ineptitude shown by our bench, you've got to role the dice.
The key word here is arbitrarily. Every time. Even when the previous results have been a disaster. Sitting key players w/2 fouls every time when we have no one to replace them with is a problem. I am totally sick of it, and this particular approach to management of the team.

I believe MN has more talent. But damn Paul has more talent than our guards.

exactly!

I think it is to the point where fans don't even realize the rotation anymore. If it was normal we'd be shocked. Granted, there is no normal at this point.

exactly, there is no "normal" to the rotation... how can a team gel and develop chemistry under circumstances like that?
