***OFFICIAL CENTRAL MICHIGAN AT MINNESOTA IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

I applaud Ben for not giving up too much for scouting in preparation for the B1G season. We wouldn't want opponents to zero in on our strategy, and for that, they should be clearly confused, like the rest of us are.

Maybe people saw it differently, but the Gophers fouling that early didn't seem intentional. Patterson one was soft as hell and Asuma's was just a freshmen trying to do too much.

Just like football our style of play is going to put us in many closer than should be games.
How many "closer than they should be" games do you think are left in this season? Looking at the schedule I anticipate no more than three.
Bethune-Cookman, Farleigh Dickenson, and Morgan State. Other than that, I will be thrilled if we keep it in single digits, win or lose.

You could be right but Asuma isn't exactly normally aggressive in anything he does. I think it was "foul him before he has a chance to shoot a three"...but not practiced or practiced poorly. If you are going to get a foul intentionally you'd like to go for a steal somehow where you gain possession for a layup versus tackling the guy.

well we have already had a few....you just named 3 more and "closer than should be" also means we may keep it within single digits to top opponents with even maybe few W's, which is the good side of the equation.
;)

Got the W! Only 6 fast break points again. Just like football our style of play is going to put us in many closer than should be games. Some will be upsets and some will be yucky losses. Just going to have to deal with it. Patterson starting to show some life of scoring. Will need him as the season gets tougher. Funny how offseason all brag about people shooting 35-40% three point shooting for getting them to transfer here, but then all negative when they miss a couple shots and not 100%. If even 42% shooter, that means going to miss the 3 58% of the time. Patterson ended up 4-9 3 pt which is 44.4%.

I realize Ben vs tougher opponents and ranked opponents might be the correct strategy and hope shooting is good enough to produce some upsets. The style of play however is not one that is too exciting and probably doesn't fill the seats as much. Just my opinion, but for others let the long season play out. Need to have some stops and steals turn into easy buckets.

Just need to outscore our opponents probably 17 or 18 more times to have a chance to dance! Rah!
Have you been watching the games? This is a horrid team. At this point, there are very few teams who could "upset" us. This is nothing resembling our football team. We play slow because we are slow and Ben has zero offense. The Ben Johnson offense is having a guard dribble around someone. That worked with Hawkins. That is not going to work with the rental tanks he brought in this year.

So far both football and basketball have SLOW offenses overall will no consistent ability to strike a homerun in football or get fastbreak points in basketball. So far football lead to some ugly losses, almost upset, and few decent good W's. So far in basketball lead to some grinding W's that probably should haven't been such a grind , a bad loss, and my guess is we will get some decent W's, more disappointing losses, maybe a big upset or two and see if it will be enough, my guess is likely not as this style usually leads to more disappointing losses, but we will see where the cookie crumbles as the season goes on and hope somehow we find some dancing shoes. Rah!

It's cool you have optimism. The football team just lost at the wire to the #4 team in the country.
The basketball team just squeaked by the #183 team in KenPom and both teams looked bewildered.
I'm not sure the comparison is appropriate.
And, I'm not sure what you see to suggest we will be within 10 points of any Big Ten team?
17 Big Ten teams are ahead of us in the Ken Pom ratings. 11 of them are in the top 40.
Hard to see anyone but Garcia go beast mode and Garcia will have the other teams best defender and 4 other guys shading his way.

As I look at the other 8 Gophers that played tonight alongside Garcia- there is not one of them that the opponent will fear enough to take the double off of Garcia. Asuma has the ability but not the confidence yet to either drive or hit the open J. The rest, just aren't very good. Maybe Mitchell and Cochrane will help. This is a very slow basketball team with no offensive flow or seemingly any offensive scheme at all.

Just the style of play as I mention. From your reaction, it is frustrating as I am frustrated a lot too. Me personally like fast play with ability to hit home runs in football and get some fast point break pts in basketball. Think most fans prefer that. Just havn't seen it in football or basketball yet with the 2 coaches. But the style of play in football kept Penn State close and my opinion is there will be some basketball games against some top teams, yes in the Big 10, that our slower play will irritate them, they will be colder shooting and we will have a few hot hand shooting games that may produce a good W or 2. Time will tell.

In the four years...these guys play the worst together. The first three didn't fit "horrid". So far, that describes this group. And you can't get better playing bad teams.
Bethune and Fairleigh are so far down the ladder if we did lose it would be a clear upset win for them. And another reason not to schedule them in the first place

I'd like you to be right but I don't see it.
If we played fast we'd lose by more. The more possessions favors more talent.
So, we are doing that to our advantage.

The football team has average Big Ten talent- perhaps better. The basketball team has the worst talent in the Big Ten, even with one all Big Ten player on the squad. This offense at 63 points per game is the exact same offense that Hawkins, Christie, Payne, Garcia and company were using last year and scoring 90 points per game in the non- conference season (look it up). The offense Ben employs is- dribble the ball around and see who can make plays. Last year he had far better players and still was sub .500 in the Big Ten. You don't need time to tell this year.

I agree it probably correct strategy vs more talented teams. Probably why this installed, but as you can see it also make for frustrating fans because we can't pull away from teams we likely should and usually just leads to below average seasons mostly so far.
