Official 2027 Gophers Football Recruiting Thread: Links, Tweets, Videos, Rumors

Paul Giel, Winona (Heisman runner up and great baseball player; All American, both sports). Bruce Smith, Faribault (Heisman)?
Bruce Smith wins the Heisman trophy and in February of 1942 enlists in the Navy and is assigned to be a fighter pilot. Due to his national significance and symbolism that even the best of us enlists when called to duty, he was sent to play football in Duluth, or thereabouts. I wouldn't call him a five-star athlete. I would call him a gold star athlete, a one of a kind.

I might add that according to his biography, when he was in the midst of cancer, he visited many patients regularly to cheer them up. A caregiver was so impressed with his work prior to his death that he nominated him for sainthood, not knowing that it was the famous football player, according to Wikipedia, if we can take that as reliable.

Bruce Smith’s father (who was a Gopher football player 1914-1916?) was a lawyer in Faribault who practiced until late in life. Kindly opposing counsel introduced me to Lucius in the Rice County Courthouse. I was tongue-tied with emotion. All I could blather was something like “your family has greatly honored the University and the State of Minnesota .” God bless the Smith family.

Thank you for sharing that story. They sound truly legendary. God bless you, as well.

This Moorhead offense must be something man, offered their HB, WR and probably QB
They are moving to the biggest class and will likely be announced this week as being in same section with Wayzata, Maple Gove, Minnetonka, Edina, Eden Prairie, STMA and Hopkins.

QB’s dad is the coach and the sophomore class is special.

Very true but even then, I can't remember a time when ANY 6A team had Gopher offers to their RB, WR1 and QB

Just thinking of D1 offensive players, maybe Kapsner (QB) Foreman (RB) McFadden (RB), different classes but shared the same backfield at EP. Pretty sure they all had offers from the U? Someone else may have a better memory

Cretin - Joe Mauer (QB), Rashon Powers-Neal (RB - ND), Marcus Freeman (TE - ND).

Cretin - John Nance (QB - MN), Michael Floyd (WR - ND), Shady Salamon (RB - MN)

Breck - Liam O'Hagan (QB - Harvard), Dominique Byrd (TE - USC), Brandon Robinson (WR - BC)(CB in college) - they were 2A. Crazy talent on that team. Beat my cousin and BOLD in the state quarters.

No idea if the Gophers offered all of them.
