Official 2025 Roster Movement Thread - Who's In and Who's Out?

with the 105 rule, there will definitely be a trickle-down effect. players who get "cut" at a P4 program will try to hook on with a G5 program. players who get cut at G5 will try to hook on with an FCS program. and so on and so forth down to D2 and D3.

unfortunately, there will be players who will be left standing when the music stops and no more chairs are available.

bangura was always a weird one to me. former 1000 yard guy and had scored 20+TDs but never really got any traction here to try play. Hopefully he finds something a little more lucrative going forward but assume he's going back down to the G5 level.
That’s two highly-rated MAC RB transfers in a row that haven’t panned out.

Would take this as it means it’s near a lock DT is back
It'll be interesting as NIL develops if guys have to sign a legally binding return for the following year, makes sense RBs are transferring under assumption he's returning but could be a real dick move to then transfer out late in window

Likely not legal to have playing contracts that aren't year to year. Nubin leaving has nothing to do the Taylor. They aren't in the same conversation. Nubin is not going to see the field unless as the #3 or #4 and Fleck likely had the conversation with him. Fleck is looking for someone to replace Major and looking to keep Ijeboi, Wright and the new true freshen happy.

Nubin touched the ball 14 times.

There is zero correlation between Nubin and any Taylor decision.

None.

Nubin wasn't going to get playing time whether Taylor stays or goes.

I disagree and that’s the joy of the board. Fleck plays who he trusts and he definitely has trusted Nubin. He’s not going to roll into next year with only freshman/rising Sophs on the roster and would’ve asked Nubin to stay if so. To me it’s that he feels good about what’s coming back and that that includes Taylor and thus was good with him moving on. Again that’s just me though

Not to mention that Nubin was the best RB in pass protection.

No sure how easy it is going to be to go elsewhere. Teams are cutting to 105 from as many as 145. Not going to be easy to find a landing spot for a lot of kids.

Taking flyer are going to be harder to come by with 105 as well. Probably easier to get a MN kid to transfer back than to transfer out.
Likes others have said, I was assuming in my comment that a lot of players that are moving on will be going down a level. That seems to be the most common destination for Gophers that transfer out. They took their shot at the highest level and couldn't get on the field. If they love to play, it makes sense they'd drop down a level or two to get some playing time. Someone mentioned a game of musical chairs as people keep transferring down. Eventually you can't go any lower and/or it's just not worth it and someone is just out of football. I would assume the large majority of players that can actually make the Gopher roster would absolutely have options at lower levels.

Jah Joyner has confirmed that he will participate in the Senior Bowl. that more or less guarantees that he will not be returning.
I will add him to the outgoing list because yeah it would seem likely that if he is playing in the senior bowl he is planning to go pro.

Jay was quite the player and will go down as a guy that just couldn't get a holding call.
Yeah, can recall many times where Jah was clearly being held by the lineman but just didn't get the call.

Assuming he does in fact go pro, hopefully he can wow at his workouts and work his way up the draft board.

He will have to learn the techniques to get those calls at the next level.

Curious to see what the future holds for Joyner. He's the right size for playing outside in a 3-4 pro defense, but the question will be about whether he has the speed to play that position. Hard-working player who had an odd 2024. Didn't have as many sacks as he did in 2023, but had more tackles and passes defended than in previous seasons, Best of luck to him. He did good things for the Gophers.

Roster Status as i see It this morning...
SON said there were 112 guys listed on the roster
New Rule Roster Limit is 105... 7 too many
We signed 21 recruits according to 247
18 seniors/nfl are departing on our list
9 people said they are transferring...so 27 moving on...27 minus 112 is 85
add the 21 signees to 85 and we are at 106
To sign 10 portal guys we need 11 additional departures
AM I Close to accurate?

Biggest position of signees...we signed 6 DL
With departures we have only Anthony Smith, Jaxon Howard, Karter Menz listed as our DL on the roster.
7 DL are departing...if we add one in the portal that would get us to the 10 number we had this year.
So, with one in the portal thats only 4 with college experience. Anthony Smith, Jaxon Howard, Karter Menz + new guy
Seems like we are vulnerable here? Probably 2 DL in the portal?
4 of our top 8 recruits are DL...evidently we think they can play as freshmen

Are you differentiating positions? Edge, DE, DT, etc.? Because I'm see more guys listed as DL on the roster. Might have missed some leaving but I see these all with eligibility still

Smith
Howard
Menz
Finnessy
Hicks
Owusu
Becker
Eastern
Sunram
Saine
Macy
JLR
Kissayi
Randle

I just counted on the official roster and I came up with 107 currently listed (might have been 106 but not counting again).

Assuming all the guys that have already announced are gone that would put us currently at 109/110 when you factor in the 18 leaving and 21 coming in.

Would expect to see another wave of transfers out after the bowl game. Will be nice when @swelna gets his thread going with the actual roster numbers. But as always the numbers seem to work themselves out. The 105 is an interesting twist though and is going to lead to some tough decisions on fringe guys.

Email from the U says they signed 20 guys today, not 21. Haven’t had time to see who was the odd one out.
