Official 2025 Roster Movement Thread - Who's In and Who's Out?

I recall him being fairly highly regarded, so I looked up his offer list: Miami, Michigan, Penn State, ISU, plus a bunch of others.
Always a bummer when the higher rated guys in classes don't pan out. But shows what a crap shoot recruiting is. Even the guys with strong rankings and good offer lists can end up getting buried on the depth chart and not being able to get on the field.

If schools are good at anything, it's deleting guys from the roster as soon as they hit the portal.
I printed the roster out yesterday. So maybe they already knew he was leaving before that. Guess I can add him to the list. :)

If I'm not mistaken, the COVID kids will be done after this year, right?

one thing that is a fact of life in HS and college sports. Seniors graduate. admittedly, it's more complicated now with unlimited transfers in college, but the basic principle is still the same - every season is its own entity. players leave - new players arrive - and it's up to the coaches to figure out what they have and how to make the best use of the available personnel.

so the Gophers will lose a number of key contributors. but they will add new players, and at least some of those players will become key contributors. last year at this time, Elijah Spencer was that guy who couldn't catch the ball - and he turned into a really solid player. somebody on the current roster will emerge next year. that's the way it works.

things could be worse. would you rather be a Purdue fan at this point? Or Northwestern? Under Fleck, the Gophers have largely been competitive. they may not be at the top of the conference, but they're not at the bottom, either.

I think there's one more year for a significant number of COVID kids. Class of 2020 were true freshman in the fall of 2020, redshirted 2021, and use their four years of eligibility in 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025 seasons and then there will be a handful of players who will get hardship redshirts, so, they might stick around for a year or two after the '25 season.

This year really isn't that different than any other year. In college sports you will always lose a bunch of starters and experience to graduation.

For all the negative things about the portal and the current college landscape the one nice thing about it is that if your coaches are good at identifying talent they can quickly fill holes. And overall, Fleck and his staff have done really well in the portal for the most part.
I'm really glad these young men can easily go play someplace else when they find out they aren't going to see playing time. Would this make it even easier for Minnesota to take flyers on local kids that might be a diamond in the rough or need some development? They know if it doesn't work out they'll likely just go elsewhere and open up a spot anyway. Maybe that is why PJ has been recruiting more MN kids? If they pan out, it's easier to keep them around, and if they don't, they'll likely move on and open up a spot. Not just recruits, but PWOs too.

The king is Brian Cardinal. Pretty sure he was simultaneously on the Wolves and Boilermakers roster.
For me, it was Jess Settles. It felt like that guy played against Willie Burton and Vincent Greer.

It's probably due to my own perspective. He played against guys I looked up to as a "kid" (Voshon Lenard) and they guys I played AAU/traveling against (Joel Pryz).

No sure how easy it is going to be to go elsewhere. Teams are cutting to 105 from as many as 145. Not going to be easy to find a landing spot for a lot of kids.

Taking flyer are going to be harder to come by with 105 as well. Probably easier to get a MN kid to transfer back than to transfer out.

Thanks for starting this thread... I always enjoy following it and reference it often. Any chance we can get this pinned to the top?

I think a lot of walkons are going to have to hang up the cleats unfortunately

They will have the option to drop down to lower levels and play still. But for those that want to be on the team while attending the U it will be much tougher to get a spot.
