Well that doesn't make sense. 10% wasn't accurate. Truth is, I don't think a top 2 or 3 is dumb. Certainly a "look at me" effort, but not really dumb. Above that gets goofy and by the time you hit double digits it certainly is really dumb. Not a linear relationship tho. I'll post a graph later.

The Gophers received an oral commitment Friday night from Mariano Sori-Marin, a 6-foot-2, 223-pound outside linebacker, he announced on Twitter.

“I’m extremely honored to announce that I will be continuing my education and playing Big 10 football at the University of Minnesota!” Sori-Marin tweeted. “Thank you, Coach (P.J.) Fleck and the rest of the coaching staff. Row the Boat! Ski U Mah!”

Sori-Marin, of New Lenox, Ill., is the 13th pledge in the Gophers 2018 recruiting class. He had other offers from Ivy League schools such as Harvard, Yale, Penn, Cornell as well as Western Illinois.

The Gophers added their 13th verbal commitment for the class of 2018 on Friday night, when Mariano Sori-Marin, a linebacker from New Lenox (Ill.) Providence Catholic, announced he was picking Minnesota.

The 6-3, 227-pound Sori-Marin had reported offers from Harvard, Yale, Cornell, Brown and Penn, among others. He is rated as a three-star recruit by 247Sports.

Lee will be an interesting case. He dominated at his current level of competition - just ran away from people based on superior speed. Marshall had most games won at halftime, so Lee didn't see as many snaps in the second half of games until they got into the section playoffs. He's pretty electric. Like you said, there was a competition gap during the regular season, but that's mostly because Marshall is isolated from similar-sized schools. So they actually played 5 regular season games against Class AAA schools (Marshall is Class AAAA). Also having Blaise Andries blocking in front of him was probably beneficial.

He's pretty small, probably too small to be an every-down back in college. Certainly at this level. I don't know much about his recruiting, other than he's recently visited South Dakota State and North Dakota. I could see him be a good fit at a Group of 5 school.

His teammate Trey Lance seems to be getting more college attention, holding scholarship offers from three Missouri Valley schools (NDSU, SDSU, UNI), three Ivy League schools (Brown, Cornell, Columbia), and Northern Illinois.

New Lenox (Ill.) Providence Catholic junior outside linebacker recruit Mariano Sori-Marin (6-foot-2, 225 pounds) added a recent offer from Minnesota and gave the Gophers his verbal commitment late last Friday night.

"It's been pretty overwhelming," Sori-Marin said. "Minnesota just offers the best fit for me so I committed. Minnesota offers strong academics plus they also play in the Big Ten. After I visited I knew that Minnesota is a great place to be so I talked it over with my family and I committed."

Sori-Marin filled us in on how he went from Gophers prospect to verbal pledge in just a few week's time.

"Both Coach (Brian) Callahan my recruiting coach at Minnesota and the defensive coordinator (Robb Smith) came to watch one of my workouts in person a few weeks ago. The Minnesota coaches called me and invited me to come up and make a campus visit. I went to Minnesota last Monday with my parents for a visit. We sat down and had a chance to take a full tour of the campus and the facilities. I also had a chance to sit down and talk with some of the people involved on the academic side along with talking to several of the coaches at Minnesota. Minnesota did offer me before we left campus. We went home and talked it over and gave it a few days to sink in and in the end Minnesota is a great fit and I'm very excited to commit to the University of Minnesota."

Sori-Marin also pointed towards head coach PJ Fleck and the excitement around the football program as another big factor in his decision.

"Coach (PJ) Fleck is just a high energy guy who is also very down to earth. Everyone on the team and around the football program are all in and everyone is committed to the team. It's just a really exciting time at Minnesota and I definitely want to be a part of that excitement."

Did Sori-Marin ever think that he would end up playing in the Big Ten?

"I thought it would eventually happen. I worked really hard and I know that God has a plan. The coaches at Minnesota recruited me when they were at Western Michigan so we always had stayed in touch even after they left for Minnesota. It's just an amazing feeling right now to be committed to Minnesota."

It is the "quiet" period in regards to contacts. Check the Minnesota Rivals site , they've still been giving out offers There is a 3 star defensive tackle coming in for a visit May 9tb
 

I recommend people listen to the Gopher Gridiron Radio podcast Ep#77. It has some interesting insight in the differences in the recruiting styles from the Kill/Claeys staff to the PJ staff.

Urban Meyer has a two year commitment clause for all of his coaches, Fleck might have the same.
 

A few unofficial visits from 2018 croots on the horizon this week:

3-star DT Noah Shannon - P5 offers include Arkansas, Duke, Indiana, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas State, Michigan State, Missouri, Rutgers, Syracuse, Virginia, Washington State

3-star TE Ben VanSumeren - currently committed to Western Michigan. Holds offers from Columbia, Harvard and Yale so he'd probably qualify academically. Just guessing.

3-star OT Trevor Downing - P5 offers include Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas State, Missouri.
 


Downing would be a great "get" as I think he is listed as the number 1 in the class of 2018 in Iowa. (Any way that's what my neighbor told and my neighbor is never wrong - kind of like my wife).

He's highly rated in the state, but I think John Waggoner is the consensus #1 from Iowa (holds offers from Florida, LSU, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Penn State, UCLA)
