Oakland v NDSU right now...ESPN2...check it out!

the irony is killing me! killing me i tells ya! killing me....

anyways, not sure i said the minneapolis metro area has an utter "lack of concern for outstate minnesota" as you so eloquently put it. but, i think there is some truth that most in the metro area want our news to be focused on the minneapolis metro as much as possible SINCE THAT IS WHERE WE LIVE!!! there are newspapers and tv stations in other parts of the state who can cover outstate minnesota issues and sports just fine. sometimes there seems to be this strange expectation on the part of some that the minneapolis media should pay just as much attention and focus just as much of their time on outstate minnesota as it does the metro area. why is that? is it an inferiority thing? just kidding!

Bronko, what you don't seem to comprehend is that 8 players on the NDSU roster have very strong MN and twin cities ties. This is the definition of local news. For example, do you think if a MN resident climbs to the top of Mt. Everest that is not local news? It doesn't matter that Mt. Everest is located halfway around the world, it still has a local twist because the person was from MN. Do you understand our point?

again it is NDSU. i root for the gophers so i don't think it is news that NDSU won a weak mid-major conference tournament. big deal that there are a majority of MN kids on their roster. this will probably be the case every year for both NDSU's football and basketball programs. north and south dakota do not have enough people or talent to fill their roster with a majority of dakotans so they strongly go after the balance of minnesota kids that are still available. so because of that fact do us gopher fans all have to become some kind of de facto NDSU/SDSU fans whenever they have some mild successes? hell no!

my point is that it isn't like minnesotans don't play on other team's around the country that are going to the NCAA's. so cole aldrich from bloomington plays for kansas and they are going as well. do i need to see a local angle story and be super happy about that just because he is from minnesota? no!

There's no inferiority complex, but you're being ignorant. Little Falls, as you cite no one caring about, is in the Minneapolis DMA. Guess what TV stations they get? The Minneapolis ones, duh. So yes it is a reasonable expectation that the Minneapolis tv stations provide some level of weather and news coverage of that area. Hell, they have a legal obligation to as part of thier FCC license. Where are these 'other tv stations' in this part of the state that should cover Little Falls or Brainerd or Bemidji? There aren't any, save for a PBS affilaite. All of these cities are in the Minneapolis TV market. Yes, the majority of population is in the metro, and a majority of the coverage focuses there. That is fine. But ignoring 75% of the geographic area of your DMA is not wise either.

howeda, you'll have to forgive my ignorance as I've never lived there, but aren't there local tv stations in St. Cloud, Rochester, Duluth, etc?

St. Cloud, no. Rochester is part of a seperate tv market. Rochester/Austin/Mason City, IA. So yes I believe Rochester has at least one. Obviously, Duluth is it's own market and has it's own stations.

But I think people in the metro mistakenly think that places like Brainerd, Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and St. Cloud, etc are part of the Duluth or Fargo markets. They are NOT. All of these places are part of the Minneapolis market. Take a look at a tv market map sometime. Duluth has only a few counties in it's market. Fargo has only a few Minnesota counties. Rochester/Austin has a few. And Sioux Falls, SD has a few. Mankato has literally it's own county and maybe one other. But the vast, vast majority of the counties in Minnesota are in the Minneapolis/St. Paul market. It's probably one of the largest geographic markets in the nation. WCCO and KSTP used to have satellite affiliates in Alexandria that did local news. I don't believe either one does any longer, and you can't get those on satellite in any case. So the outstate coverage of all of the affiliates has gotten very poor. I understand that the majority of the population is in the metro, but the rest of the market is hardly a barren wateland with no people as some on here seem to think.

damn buddy. you sure like to put words in other people's mouths don't you?! tell me where i or anyone else called outstate minnesota a "barren wasteland" as you put it in comparison to the minneapolis metro. bet you can't. and i certainly don't feel that way about outstate minnesota.

Here is a website with a good map. I think some of the counties in the northwest corner go back and forth between Minneapolis and Fargo in different ratings periods. Also, the 'stations' you see listed for Brainerd, Bemidji, etc. are almost all just signal repeaters of the Minneapolis stations with the exceptions of the PBS stations.

you proved my point. thank you! it is not on the main home page of the star tribune. it is buried within the sports section of the website towards the bottom of the page. it is a quick blurb. it is an AP story (not written by a strib reporter) and the main focus of the headline/story is more the minnesota kid who hit the winning shot (ben woodside) than north dakota.

again most people who are actually FROM the minneapolis metro area originally (not north dakotans or NDSU alums living in minneapolis now) don't care about anything NDSU related. just deal with it. as ron burgundy says: "it's science!" :)

art my boy - in case you haven't noticed the minneapolis media doesn't really care about north dakota news or NDSU for that matter, so why would they try to spin this news at all?! if it even shows up on the sports portion of the minneapolis news it will likely be a quick blurb and a mention of the minnesota natives on the team since no one down here in mpls would care about any other aspect of the NDSU team understandably. end of story.

Souhan had another nice article today about NDSU....

Even the Daily Gopher is giving NDSU love...
