I expect a mid-season extension with a BIG buyout if things are looking well. Post Nebraska or post Maryland if we're looking at a one loss season up to that point. If Northwestern is having a down year, maybe they hold out to hopefully have at most 1 lost going into the final 3 weeks.

Basically, if we reach the final 3 weeks with 1 (maybe 2) loss(es) max, I'd be surprised if we waited to give an extension. If we have 3 or more, I can see us waiting to see how the last 3 weeks go.

Tennessee knew that it it didn’t stop them from coming after PJ.

An extension with a bigger buyout would be great reduce the chance PJ takes another job and hopefully increase the assistant salary pool to reduce turnover of the staff.
 

Also his last raise came before we beat PSU and Auburn so I’ve always felt like he kind of deserved another raise after the season right after he got the first one.

The only arguments against a larger extension are:

optics - which is just an opinion, I’d argue the optics for the program and athletic department are better if they gave him a giant contract (which is also an opinion)

merit - if you don’t think he is the correct long term answer (I obviously do)

His current contact has six seasons left on it. This upcoming season will be telling as far as what Coyle will do. I don't see anything happening until well into the season or just after, like in previous years.

That doesn’t mean it is the correct thing to do. But I agree with you on what will likely happen.
 

Yeah, the Gophers finished 3-4.

But, we lost two games because of sub-par performance in the kicking game.

A botched extra-point at Maryland and a missed field goal at Whisky. (they still could have scored a TD and won.)

But, PJ has signed not 1, but 2 kickers for next season! 1 of them is the MAC (I think) kicker of the year! He made 82% of his FG attempts! Why aren't the Vikings signing him? Bailey's Irish Cream gets paid millions and can't make that % in extra points!

So cut PJ some slack and our friend who recognizes his genius the same.

We are going to have to give him a contract at some point in the next 18 months anyways. May as well do it now
 



Like it or not, "optics" matter.

The U of MN is facing a significant financial deficit because of lost revenue due to covid-19 and no fans at games.

The U of MN is eliminating some non-revenue sports.

If - given that situation - the U of MN then turns around and gives the Head Football coach an extension - and/or salary increase - I guarantee you that the U of MN will get pounded in the media.

My bottom line -

If Fleck really wants to be at MN, then an extra million $ more or less should not be a deal-breaker. By any rational standard, he is making a very good living. According to one site I found, the average salary for a U of MN employee is $59,000 give or take. Fleck makes more money in one year than a lot of people will earn in their entire lifetime.

Fleck also makes more than the head coach at Wisconsin.

None of these are good reasons to not give him an extension. People who complain about giving him an extension now were likely bitter about his salary to begin with, and will use COVID as a convenient talking point.

Insane. Get me coach who can beat Wisconsin at home with a shot at the BIG championship and I would be right behind it. Fleck has done a lot of good but lets keep grounded here, still cannot beat Wisconsin or Iowa even when its on the line. See that during the remainder of his contract then maybe put a raise and contract out there.

I half think your take is in jest. He needs a couple more 9+ win seasons in the next three to back up the Brinks truck and do another big extension. There's literally no reason to do anything as he has six seasons left, and the mess that was 2020. I'm guessing neither Coyle OR Fleck have any desire to do anything. If things are back to normal this season, I expect Coyle and Fleck to get together after the end of the season and do something modest $$ wise and add two years.

If Coyle was smart he would try to do it now

I think you are likely correct saying it doesn’t happen until towards the end of next season

Sorry if this is a dumb question: has the U ever given a football coach a mid-season extension? If it happens all the time, fine. I just thought that stuff always waits until after the season, so as not to be a distraction.

I'd like Fleck focusing on the opponents, not the terms of the extension. But you could easily fire back that most of that stuff early on is taken care of by his agent. I don't know to what extent is closer to the truth.
