Deferred compensation for 2021 that doesn’t give him much of a raise but a large buyout and huge money 2023-2026 once pandemic budgets have passed.

Why is it needed now?

Seems unrealistic to do it now IMO with the U's budget woes and 1 in 7 Americans, likely Minnesotans as well ,suffering from food insecurity - the optics are horrible and this would get roasted in the media.
It could still be done in the fall once everything is more settled and the overall economy (which the stock market isn't and unemployment has also dropped).

We just came off a 3-4 record, lost to Iowa, Wisky and Michigan, had #10 rated recruiting class in the BIG and #39 or something like that nationally. Plus our version of D and ST was not good and our offense lagged from 2019.

Give him a raise "just because"?

Several coaches have signed extensions in the last few months, the "optics" argument is trash.

Optics are always relative to the fan base/community. They are not all the same.

Not increasing PJs buyout will definitely fix food insecurity.

What you just gave me is a false choice fallacy


they should structure the money in a way that has no raise in 21-22 and maybe 22-23 and then huge dollars in 23-24 and beyond. For the optics

Yup. Yet the buyout already shrunk low enough for national media to consider him a viable target for Tennessee.
We should be giving him an Iowa State type deal

And he took a voluntary pay cut due to pandemic
 


He got his long deal already. He is signed through 2026. I wouldn't touch it for a couple year. Maybe increase his assistant pool if I change anything. Then consider extending him through 2030-2032 after 2022 season if he's still the guy.

We'll see what the buyout is for Campbell. Fleck's is $3M

Not the same.

PJ is under contract until 2026 so that is not an issue when it comes to recruiting plus his contract was extended Nov 2019.

Contracts need to based on merit and not out of fear of losing a coach. If the coach is doing well, then an extension is a no brainer. If not, then wait and see what the future brings.

What's the deal? I haven't seen the numbers of his deal. Fleck was already making $900,000 more per year.
 


*IF* you believe that we would win the Big Ten in 2021, then sure the premise makes some amount of sense to "lock in" PJ now when he isn't worth nearly as much as he will be after this coming season.

But, of course, we don't know that.

That is definitely a fair point, but two of these schools include Iowa State and Northwestern, not typically your schools that are all in on football and nothing else.

Having just a 4.5 million dollar buyout is a big deal

If you think you’ve got a coach you lock him in.
I’ll take this as you still aren’t sold on fleck as the long term answer. That’s fine.

You don't get big picture bro, I get it. You play checkers whilst I'm talking about the moves you make when you play chess. The average MN resident isn't going to understand or care about the structure of the contract - the focus will be on amount of the extenstion.

I am here to tell you that nobody actually cares in a negative way that the gophers give a good coach a new contract.

In fact, I think giving PJ a huge contract would actually be more of a win on optics than a loss. Even in the current environment. Yes the 19 men’s gymnastics fans will be upset. But that’s 19 people.

We'll agree to disagree on this one as we both have the right to be wrong.

I would agree with you if he hadn't just received a pay bump and extension; as I don't see it being a necessity or a shrewd business move.

Additionally, if Coyle and the U want to move on from Pitino, it seems prudent to deal with those financials first before worrying about Phillip.
