i’d prefer to be be at a university with a heterodoxy of ideas, even if some of them are stupid, than be a part of a rigid orthodoxy where everyone’s thoughts are policed by line toers who are too afraid of being different or being made fun of that they are incapable of pursuing new ideas.
a flat earth is a stupid idea, but there are many other orthodox ideas that you hold right now that people 100 and 1000 years from now will laugh at you for holding. and history has shown that there are many ideas that are laughed at by the majority that turn out to be correct.
besides, a top university is exactly where someone like this should be. 1. he is going to get his ideas challenges. 2. people who don’t care what others believe often do interesting things and make the world a better place.
