What this writer fails to take into account is the very real loyalty that Penn Staters have for their school. It is easy to say that kids "should" transfer when looking in from the outside, but the emotion that goes into the WE ARE... chants is very real. I am friends with a couple former Penn State players and a couple other alums, and they are very proud of what they put in and what their degree means. The fact that four or five people made the decision to cover up the terrible acts of one person does not take away from my friends' pride, especially because their pride is more about the university as a whole than it is about the success of the football program.
I can only hope that Minnesota kids would share this same sense of pride in their degree, and it is disappointing that someone would say that kids "should" transfer. Then again, given the level of "journalism" found at the all-fan Bleacher Report, I am not surprised.
There will be transfers, but I would not be surprised if the numbers fall short of the "mass exodus" you are describing.
Excellent points to be kept in mind. It's going to be difficult for Penn State to recruit going forward and they'll lose some guys due to transfer, but kids take a lot of things into account when making a college decision and my guess is even for football players, it's more than simply football. Penn State is a good school and I don't know if a lot of the players would transfer to a school with less academic prestige just to say they played in a bowl game.
