Not-So-Happy Transfers

This article hits it on the head...

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1269998-penn-state-players-should-transfer

As the mass exodus begins, I thought it would be nice to have a thread that keeps a running tally on who is leaving and where they're going.

What this writer fails to take into account is the very real loyalty that Penn Staters have for their school. It is easy to say that kids "should" transfer when looking in from the outside, but the emotion that goes into the WE ARE... chants is very real. I am friends with a couple former Penn State players and a couple other alums, and they are very proud of what they put in and what their degree means. The fact that four or five people made the decision to cover up the terrible acts of one person does not take away from my friends' pride, especially because their pride is more about the university as a whole than it is about the success of the football program.

I can only hope that Minnesota kids would share this same sense of pride in their degree, and it is disappointing that someone would say that kids "should" transfer. Then again, given the level of "journalism" found at the all-fan Bleacher Report, I am not surprised.

There will be transfers, but I would not be surprised if the numbers fall short of the "mass exodus" you are describing.

2013 PSU decommit Ross Douglas only waits one day before committing to Michigan

The loyalty to PSU is likely no greater than at any other school. To declare such is folly at best, denial at worst. I find it hard to believe that the general population of any school is that much different. Players are people, not automatons. We'll see, but I think the numbers of transfers will be interesting. It will take only a few to convince the rest.

We will see. I am only repeating what I have heard and seen. You could be right, though I am guessing by the tone of your post that you have not known any Penn Staters.

Question: In the next four years can players of any PSU sports program leave the school and play the following year at a different school?

I was just going to ask that question. It's a pretty small window between now and the start of practice this year for many players to find a team.

From what I understand they can play this year for PSU and at the end of the season they can transfer to any school they choose with out being penalized.

What this writer fails to take into account is the very real loyalty that Penn Staters have for their school.

Loyalty is one thing. But also remember none of these kids have played a down for the new coaching staff. With no prospects for postseason play and a drastically cut depth chart, individual players hoping to go pro are going to have a tough time. Liken it to being in school at the U and having your department come under severe sanctions, lose its accreditation and get tons of bad publicity. Would you jeopardize your future career prospects, or would you strongly consider transferring?

They can transfer in any year the bowl ban is in place. The can keep the schollie and quit the team to be a student. There will be transfers this week, declaring for the draft if on the bubble, and transfers this spring. USC lost 7 transfers, PSU will lose more.

A lot of reasons for a young guy to be in LA, not so many reasons to be in Happy Valley.

Sad how USC could cash in on this mess - Sure hope Silas Redd does not choose to go there.

The only position of need for SC this year is RB. He could transfer, soak up the Sun, LA fame, run the table and be a NC propelling him to the nfl or be in Valium Valley. Tuff choice.

Yes, I do know Penn Staters. No, I just always take rampant provincialism into account on comments like this. Everyone wants to feel special, especially awesome. As my military friends all say "All branches of the service suck except _______ (theirs)".

People are people. The general public distribution of personalities is the same pretty much anywhere you go, even a fine academic institution like PSU (or Minnesota or Nebraska...). Introverts, extroverts, smart and not so smart. Left, right, center. 20% are crazy.

I think if this thing happened to another school, you would have roughly the same numbers jumping ship. With a year for this to shake out for these players, all bets are off.

I agree 100%. Even Brewster was able to hold on to most of his recruits (unless there were legal or academic reasons). My guess is these athletes enjoy the fellowship and are comfortable in their situation.

Right now, Penn State is more unified than ever - after all, what unifies more than a common enemy (in this case the NCAA)?

O'Brien has stuck his finger in dike and, so far, has stopped the leak which has been limited to the following:

- Ross Douglas (decommit to Michigan)
- Ryan Nowicki (TBD)

Can he save Holland?

Stupid question - what if after this season with the kids on this years roster they already have over/around 65 scholarship athletes that stay? If they are over would they have cut? If they are at or near they might not be able to offer many/any scholarships. Just a thought.

I counted 24 seniors on Penn State's roster. I don't know if they are all on scholarship though. Two players are transfering, so Penn State wouldn't have to cut any players to get down to 65. It might not leave much room at all for 2013 recruits. I would guess that some players will transfer after the season, there usually are a couple even in normal seasons.

I'm not that surprised that most of the Seniors and Juniors have decided to stay.

Assume Redd does leave the school that opens up playing time for Bill Belton. His mindset might be I like Penn State, but I can play for two years and turn pro after the 2014 season.

I really thought there would be more transfers. It looks like the NCAA sanctions are not having the intended effect.

I thought they said that they could have 75 for one year on their way down to 65?

Penn St. S Tim Buckley transfers to NC St. per @jpgiglio

No big hits yet...

- Ross Douglas (decommit to Michigan)
- Ryan Nowicki (TBD)
- Rob Bolden (LSU) - third string but previous starter
- Tim Buckley (NC State) - preferred walk-on

Note: Redd leaning toward USC. If this happens, it will interesting to see if other dominos start fall (e.g., Anthony Fera (Texas), linebackers Khairi Fortt (California, Florida State) and Mike Hull (Pittsburgh) and tight end Kevin Haplea (Florida State))?
