The $800,000 schedule decision
By Norwood Teague

http://www.startribune.com/opinion/commentaries/176040731.html

The past 10 days have been challenging ones at the University of Minnesota. But they've also been educational and thought-provoking.

As the athletics director of the state's most visible public university, I will make decisions that not everyone agrees with. I will always be guided, however, by what is in the best interests not just of athletics, but of the entire university community.

As I made the decision to cancel Gopher football games with the University of North Carolina for future seasons, I had the same concerns that have been widely aired since the decision was made. These concerns ranged from why we would step away from playing a seemingly manageable opponent to how we can justify paying an $800,000 cancellation charge, especially in these challenging economic times. That was, undoubtedly, the most difficult part of this decision.

Let me assure you, we will recoup this expense through football program revenues and future private fundraising only. It will not be paid at the expense of any other sports program at the university, and we will not use tuition or state funding to cover it.

So why did I make this decision? When I applied for this job, interviewed for it and was honored to receive it, I consistently heard: "Gopher football must become relevant again. We have a new campus stadium. We need to elevate the program and win the right way."

We all agree that we need to raise the status and competitiveness of our football team. Being successful in football helps support all of our nonrevenue sports. It's great for community pride and alumni relations. It's an important part of our students' college experience. It's important to building Minnesota's national brand.

My challenge -- our challenge -- is to develop the best strategies to make Gopher football successful. The question is, what are they? To help me answer this important question, I sought the advice of head football coach Jerry Kill.

Coach Kill has a track record of building successful programs, and he has a strategic plan to rebuild Gopher football. It is a plan that I support and believe in. It is a plan born of the realities of big-time college football. Six victories per season allow a team to be considered for a bowl game. Postseason bowl games allow teams an extra game and month of practice. Bowl games help us recruit, and recruiting builds top-notch programs. Top-notch programs win games, fill seats, attract excellent student-athletes and generate revenue. But it is the investments made early in the rebuilding process that lay the foundation for long-term success.

I've been on the job for about five months now. I've raised funds for athletic scholarships. I've hired a nationally respected architectural firm to help us develop an affordable long-term improvement plan for our facilities. I'm leading our staff to advance a new strategic plan for our entire 220-employee, 750-student-athlete, $80 million department. I've hired coaches for women's tennis and soccer. And I've shared my vision for Gopher athletics to hundreds of business and community leaders in the Twin Cities and across the state.

I am deeply committed to moving Gopher athletics forward. I will promote a culture of compliance, integrity and student-athlete success. I will continue our great tradition of gender equity. I will strive to maintain athletic opportunities. I am working every day to raise private philanthropy. I will support all of our coaches to build their programs the right way, one step at a time.

As your athletics director, I will be faced with making many tough and controversial calls. I know that not everyone will agree with every decision I make. But I do hope the people of Minnesota will trust that we will always act in a way that puts the university first. I will work hard to communicate decisions clearly and thoughtfully and explain how they fit into my vision for the future. Ultimately, I hope we will always be united by our love for Gopher athletics and this great institution.

Norwood Teague is the director of athletics for the University of Minnesota.

The final sentence: "I hope we will always be united by our love for Gopher athletics and this great institution."

Now I will go with that.

And we're going to generate a net profit on going to the Poulan Weed-Eater Bowl? With our 6 "quality" wins (4 NC and 2 B10) and our strength of schedule (stop laughing), we will get the lowest of the low bowl games that the B1G 10 has contracted. And we're going to attract quality players with a bowl game that only the player's relatives MIGHT attend? And you don't think that opposing coaches will use the F'UP on Nelson's redshirt against us in the recruiting wars? Good Luck.

Reusse's tweet about the op-ed: "Bunch of meaningless bull dung."

Go Gophers!!

Let me save you the time of having to read this column.

The only sentence that matters is:

Let me assure you, we will recoup this expense through football program revenues and future private fundraising only.

The most important word in the above sentence is "and".

Nice article to say a whole lot of nothing.

That was my thought exactly. He addresses the issue without actually addressing the issue. Talks about recouping the funds privately but those are still $800K in contributions that could have gone somewhere else within the department that desperately needs them.

The good news for Kill in all this is apparently the AD is fully on board with the football program sucking in the Big Ten for the next few years as like the coach he believes the only sure way to 6 wins is by scheduling four creampuffs. It is what it is and it is over and done with but this is not a good start to the NT administration. Good news is he has nowhere to go but up.

This whole situation was a very poor start for our new AD who should have been smart enough to know what a horrible PR move it was going to be and tough enough to tell Kill he was going to have to play the game no matter how much he whined about. What was Kill going to do about it - quit? Teague was hired to be the boss and not take orders from one of his coaches who is only in his second season.

Oh ya, and not give a damn about the players, like some of you obviously don't.

We all know that a team can only go from being irrelevant to prominent in one step. Any sub-par bowl game along the way is just a sign of failure. Or not.

It's better than not going to a bowl game at all. It's a process. Until you understand that, you'll never be satisfied.

It's just your opinion that it was a "F'UP". Don't really understand how coaches would use that against us anyways.

This issue has never been about the players. I would be willing to bet if you surveyed the locker room the vast majority would much rather test themselves against North Carolina than go blowout some team that shouldn't even be on the field with them.

This whole situation is about the AD and the Head Coach. It was never about the players.

This is all it has to do with. This is Kill lowering expectations. If he exceeds tbose expectations he can say told you it would work.

Ugh. Does he really think that helped. Just drop it. Mistake. Water under the bridge.

I agree that this article is going to hurt more than it will help. I really hope we throttle Purdue, we need the press to start talking football again.

I love how some people on this board talk about this program like it's been good over the last 40 years (minus a few years stuck in there here and there). Why schedule "non conference cream puffs" like South Dakota, South Dakota State, and North Dakota, teams that they always "blowout" and "shouldn't even be on the field with them".

If Norwood Teague is going to raise even a million dollars more than any prior AD (anyone want to bet me on that one?), then he can do whatever the hell he wants with that money. As for coach Kill, why have the balls to do it your way when we have all these super intelligent fans that know how to do it better? I mean it's not like Kill or Teague have ever had any success in their lives? I mean look at all the head coaching success Tim Brewster had when he came here? Look at the great success Joel Maturi had!

Well heck, we should win now!!! Brewster left this program in great shape!!! He left us talented, awesome, offensive linemen! Great depth! Amazing skill players! And moreover, look at all the experienced players we have. Why in the world would we want an extra month of practice??? Come on guys, that would be a waste. In fact, that might only be worth a couple hundred dollars. Hey Norwood, Jerry, don't you guys know this is Minnesota Football? We finish anywhere from 4th to 12th in the Big Ten, more often below 5th. Don't you understand, you can't do anything radical! The way we've been doing things around here the last 45 years has been just fine! You guys coming in here with your balls, and confidence, and all that stuff. We Minnesotans, we'll show you! We'll put you in your place! No way you and Jerry Kill are going to add value to this program, and if you do, please confer with us as to what to do with the money.

Very disappointing. I guess the lesson we should take from this fiasco is that we cannot play any teams in non-conference which might have a reasonable possibility of beating us, and what kind of message does that send to the fans, not to mention the players? Rather than challenging them to excel, to me it sends a message something akin to..."I don't believe in you, and question whether you can beat that team, so therefore, we're going to run away from them so as to not even have to face the possibility of defeat."

To me that exhibits cowardice, and defeatism, because surely we can only attain those 4 non-con wins by playing the likes of Creampuff State University. Any team that might even exhibit a pulse (and UNC is clearly not even that good), then stay well away.

Shameful, and I very rarely ever have anything negative to say. I was a Kill fan from the beginning, but my opinion of him has unfortunately dropped due to this escapade. This was just incredibly lame.

I'd agree with this. What I would find hard to believe is that anyone would knowingly contribute to the "Lost 800k Fund". Taking away from Peter to pay Paul?

Time to cancel my Chapel Hill tailgating spot. I am disappointed for ME, but I support Kill and Teague. This will take time and they have plans in place. Sounds to me like Kill expects to go to a bowl next season.

I would hope so. Year 3 and 4 creampuffs. But I don't know, for all of you that feel Kill can do no wrong....is it fair to expect this rebuilding team to win 2 conference games next year? To me I would think that would be a minimum requirement but I don't know if that is expecting to much for us to even put up a fight in the conference.

I'll give Teague and Kill a mulligan on this one. I would like to play a name school every year in non-conference but this was just one nonconference home game and hopefully we can schedule a name school in the future.

Why would Teague write this and have the issue resurface? It was dying off which was the best thing that could happen and he has to write an editorial basically saying nothing of significance. Hopefully, we will see better judgement from him in the future.

I was wondering that as well. Probably means that behind the scenes this issue is still more prominent. He probably thought he would end all speculation once and for all with the op-ed piece which of course did exactly the opposite and just re-opened the issue again and made him look foolish again. He needs the football team to win a few games to push this totally to the back burner.

What he should have done was just told Jerry, "I know you are trying to re-build things and don't feel we are going to be in a position to get to a bowl game without 4 weak non-conf opponents, but as a department we can't afford to throw away that kind of money in the hopes of getting one extra W on the schedule. In the future if you don't want to play BCS caliber opponents I will support your scheduling decisions but this series is on the schedule and the opponent is manageable so get your team prepared to play and go win the damn game."

The misconception that many have is most people aren't upset about the scheduling thing they are upset because we paid a lot of money to get out of a game that was already scheduled. UNC is t a bad team but they aren't good either. We could have kept kills master plan and kept the UNC series and it wouldn't hurt the program. It's over now nothing we can do, I just hope Teague and kill stop talking about it

I for one trust Teague and Kill a lot more than the media and the fans that have been bashing this to death.

Imagine if we still had that $800,000 AND future private fundraising....
No matter how you slice it, we just blew $800,000 that could have been spent to improve our facilities, etc.

FWIW - I wrote to Teague and Kaler about my displeasure about this situation. I only got a response from the president's office. No personal response from Teague (not that I was totally expecting one).

Below is what President Kaler wrote to me:

Thanks for sharing your concern about Gopher athletics.

While neither AD Teague nor I was pleased about the cost, I do support the tough decisions he needs to make to support our football and other intercollegiate athletics programs. Coach Kill is certain that playing North Carolina on this schedule is not in the best interests of the team as it is rebuilding, and I trust his judgment.

Intercollegiate Athletics will fund the payments to North Carolina over the next two years by redirecting resources associated with our football program including the scheduling of future opponents, ticket sales, and operational expenses. This expense will have no affect on the 24 other Gopher sports programs.

I am confident in both Norwood Teague and Jerry Kill. They are the right people for their respective roles at this time. We are all committed to acting in the best interests of our student athletes and our Gopher football program, and I appreciate your continued support of the University.

Sincerely,
Eric W. Kaler
President
