Northwestern: Pregame Thread

Dear self-appointed arbiter of "analysis value,"

Never did I claim to provide an in depth analysis. I was only responding to the following non-analytical post by MNVCGUY:

"If you buy into the current line on this board in regards to youth vs. experience we are in a lot of trouble on Saturday because their roster is full of Juniors and Seniors."

Which, to address the implication of being full of Jr/Srs in comparison to Minnesota, only required counting the # of Jrs/Srs on each depth chart.

Further, in the pot-kettle-black category, you made the following statement while providing no data or analysis: "The defense is older but is still very young compared to other teams." Where's the proof of that?

You might read my 5:08 pm response to you instead re-sending the same comments. It appears that I seemed to hit a nerve with you. Instead of choosing to get angry and taking it personally you might want to read what I said to you first.:)

ESPN Predictions:

NORTHWESTERN at MINNESOTA

Adam Rittenberg: Northwestern can't afford another poor start on offense, and I think the Wildcats come out of the gates a little stronger and take an early lead. Minnesota's Max Shortell makes some plays in the pass game, firing two touchdown passes, but Northwestern gets the ball in the hands of playmakers Venric Mark and Kain Colter a lot more often this week than last. Mark and Colter combine for three touchdowns and Northwestern survives a late scare to improve to 6-1. ... Northwestern 28, Minnesota 24

Brian Bennett: If the Gophers had a fully healthy MarQueis Gray, I'd be more likely to pick them here. As it stands, I don't think a gimpy Gray gives them enough firepower to get past Northwestern. Minnesota struggled against the run last time out against Iowa, and will do the same against Colter and Mark. A Jeff Budzien field goal provides the difference. ... Northwestern 31, Minnesota 28

MN Daily: Poor D haunted team during bye week
A series of bad defensive plays cost Minnesota in its last game.

Go Gophers!!

Amazing how the non Star Trib and non Pioneer Press entities write way better articles regarding the Gopher Football team. The 2 big newspapers suck in comparison (outside of Phil Miller and Marcus Fuller). I love hearing how Claeys responded to the bye week! That's the fire Minnesota needs! I like Claeys! We need a bad ass team and that's the mentality this coaching staff is bringing. Physical, nasty, wanting to kick your ass as bad as possible and not worrying one lick about it! Keep coming after you until the final second ticks off! I love that the coaching staff is pissed!

@GopherFBEquip: Going traditional for this week's game. Maroon on Gold.

Go Gophers!!

@KFAN1003: Jerry Kill: "I anticipate us being able to play [MarQueis] a little bit [on Saturday]..." #Gophers

Go Gophers!!

Can we stop Northwestern's running game without having our safety's cheat a bunch? Will we need to blitz to bring pressure?

Will the home crowd be loud?!

Can we stop Northwestern's running game without having our safety's cheat a bunch? Will we need to blitz to bring pressure?

Will the home crowd be loud?!

Can we stop their running game is the $1,000,000 question. Guess we will find out if 2 weeks was long enough to fix some of the holes in our run D. The one thing we know for sure is that Northwestern is going to try and run and try to run a lot. I would not expect us to blitz a ton at least early in the game.

Excited to see the traditional Maroon shirts Gold phants look this Saturday.

[
Go Gophers!![/QUOTE] This we should do more of, wear just the Maroon with the Gold. I like seeing the same road and home combinations.
To me the Gold uniform tops should only be brought out for special games not just because Marketing called a Gold out.
The Gold should be an honor jersey and saved for occassions where the coaches and captains believe the team has earned the right
to wear the Gold.
I'm excited to see the speed of our defense at least I think we finally have corner backs, safeties and linebackers that can run with there backs and receivers. We should not see Gaping holes or distance between Northwestern on Offense and our defense. They will still be fast and tought to stop with that No huddle but we should be a little used to that type of play calling now.
Now we just have to avoid getting sucked in by there fakes and play actions, stick to where the ball is actually going to, and people staying there gaps or position responsibilities. Max Shortell needs to have a better game and the receivers need to catch the football. Wonder who will spell Kirkwood this week besides Cobb,
as Gillumn(something has happened with him either not grasping offense or school) and Wright had that concussion and doesn't look like he has been cleared yet. I liked Minnesota tossing the football to Henry, we should do it a little more as the other teams do not seem to interested in defending the wheel route to the Full back.

I don't expect to win and I honestly hate the QB play...but we're on the right track.

Sorry guys................

"ESPN2 broadcasters for Saturday's Gophers-Northwestern game are Beth Mowins, Heather Mitts and Joey Galloway."

Friday Q&A: AJ Barker

http://espn.go.com/blog/bigten/post/_/id/61587/friday-qa-minnesota-wr-a-j-barker

So it's safe to say that you were a little under the radar coming into this season.

AB: I knew people had no idea who I was. I know this is a little thing, but I remember seeing a poll about Gophers receivers, and there were 12 receivers listed and I wasn't even listed as one of the 12. So I was like, "Huh. All right, well, we've got to prove them wrong."

Gopherhole reference?

IF it rains. Whoever wins the ground game wins the game.

If it's clear. I like the Gophers ability to stop this Northwestern offense.

I think rain is a disadvantage for the Gophers in this one. The last thing they need is to get into a run battle.

Bottom line, Shortell/Gray will need to be efficient. I hope they've been watching Christian Ponder these last couple weeks. That is exactly what we need.

Bahahaha....Better come to the game so you don't have to listen to these @ssclowns again!

I'll be in the car, listening, and will have more fun than listening to those clowns babble.

STrib: The Call: Gophers vs. Northwestern

PREDICTION

The game gets as sloppy as the weather, full of big swings. All four quarterbacks make big plays, but MarQueis Gray makes his return a memorable one with a couple of touchdown runs to help the Gophers win in their first true shootout of the season.

Gophers 35

Northwestern 31

Go Gophers!!

STrib: Validation? It’s a victory away for Gophers football

http://www.startribune.com/sports/gophers/173974231.html

Go Gophers!!

To me, that is a great article by Phil Miller...Intrigue, the unknown, the wonderment, the hopes, the expectations, whatever...Fun article to read.

Phil is doing a great job as Gopher reporter. He gives us hope, yet lots of questions. In other words, come and watch, cheer, and Love the Gophers.

Good link, Bleed, thanks.

And I agree:

Go Gophers!!!

Preview: After week off, 'U' attempting to rebound versus Northwestern

The call: Northwestern

Northwestern is the type of team the Gophers, at this stage in Kill's rebuilding attempt, should be able to beat, especially with the game being held in friendly confines. However, the Gophers have yet to prove they can do so. The program has obviously undergone a positive mentality shift in the last year, but it won't be fully accepted until it consistently translates to the field in crucial conference games. Though the Gophers' offense shouldn't struggle as much as it did at Iowa, Northwestern may put up points at a rate the "U" can't match.

Go Gophers!!

Bahahaha....Better come to the game so you don't have to listen to these @ssclowns again!

Could this be Teague's doing? Push ESPN to use their F announcers to increase attendance!

Thank god I'm going to be at the game and do not have to watch Beth Mowins and Joey Galloway doing the ESPN 2 broadcast. If I have to hear Galloway talk one more time
about the coach Kill huddle before leaving the field at halftime I'm going to heave. Galloway could not be any less informed about the Gophers, and he will most assuredly
be biased and dissing the Gophers in his usual snarky I know better than you comments about what our coach should and should not be doing.
