NIT Game #3: #1 Gophers vs. #3 Southern Miss & Chip Armelin [ESPN, Tues @ 8:00PM]

I'd guess 9th, maybe 8th.

So. Miss would be right there with Penn St. in the B1G. They are undersized and they'd be so beaten up by the end of the season that they would literally fall apart. They were quick and they kept working, but the Gophers should have won last nights game by 20. Give Pitino and crew more than 24 hours to prepare for So. Miss and you end up with a blowout for the Gophers. I'd stick So Miss at 11 or 12 in the B1G.

Almost all of his 3 point shots are short. He is not elevating the same. It's the same as if you have dead legs. I think the ankle is still bothering him. I hope he comes back and plays great next year, we will need him.

It was obvious early in the second half when the Gophers were pushing the ball up the floor that Dre was dragging a leg as he was trying to keep up on the wing. That doesn't excuse the mental mistakes and bad decisions , but to say the ankle is not physically having a negative effect on his game is not realistic.

Priority #1 for the Gopher offseason is to get Andre Hollins "right".

I'm sure it had a lot to do with his ankle, but injury or no injury the bottom line is he seemed like a better player as a sophomore than he was as a junior. The Gophers need Andre to be a bona fide stud (1st or 2nd-team All-Big 10'er?) if they intend to do anything special in 2014-15. On paper it doesn't appear like we've got much immediate help coming in, so Andre needs to take major strides his senior season. I think he will.

Priority #2? Assuming he continues to work hard in the offseason, Mo's gotta' be your starting center. He's become too big of an asset to bring off the bench. EE can still be a solid big man off the bench, never have to worry about what kind of effort you'll get from him.

Dre Hollins will be fine next year, I'd be shocked if he doesn't have a great senior season as long as he's healthy. An ankle injury that bad can ruin a season and it takes plenty of rest to recover from it. Kudos to Dre for coming back so quick despite his ankle looking like a balloon. He knew his team needed him on the court. Even though his shot is awful right now, we'd be screwed without him because he's our only other decent ball handler when Mathieu is out because of foul trouble or he needs to rest. 7 assists and 2 turnovers for Dre last night despite him not moving well.

Hoping La Tech wins tonight

Would rather see the Gophers play someone we haven't seen than play FSU again.

Would also like the opportunity to play SMU in the title game.

La. Tech has lost to both SMC and Southern Miss. We look pretty good matched up against them or Fl St.

If we get Louisiana Tech, we'd have played Brett Favre's school and then Terry Bradshaw's school in succession.

I don't know if I agree with that.

Selected stats (source) before, but not inclusive of the Wisconsin game vs. stats after the Wisconsin game, up to the St. Mary's game:

All stats/game
Minutes: 32, 30
Pts: 16, 11
2 pt FG att: 5.7, 3.5
3 pt FG att: 5.4, 5.5
FT att: 6, 3.7
O reb: 1.2, 0.2
D reb: 2.8, 2.8
Asst: 2.9, 1.5
Steals: 1.1, 0.5
Blocks: 0.2, 0

Less driving to the lane, means fewer FT attempts. Turnovers were also down, and I'm thinking it was because he was less aggressive with the ball. Fewer fouls 2.7, 2.5, again, I'll attribute that to feeling confident enough to be aggressive. 2 pt% shooting - 45%, 31%. All of those stats after the ankle injury scream not 100% with the ankle.

Don't take this as me thinking that it was all rainbows, and unicorns with glitter shooting out of their asses. I am fully expecting him to take over and be a leader in numerous ways as a senior. I just hope he can add enough the final two games of this year.

Only time will tell, but I agree with this.

Saw a few minutes of Florida State the other night. They were on fire and looked a lot better than they were in the fall when we saw them. I never want to play a team that has payback on its mind.

Yeah I'd rather play La. Tech. I wouldn't like our chances of beating FSU again, this time on a neutral court.

We'll get one week to prepare for the next opponent. I have faith that R. William Pitino can draw up a nice scheme against Florida's armpit school.

Florida has only one armpit school? Must be upgrading.:p

I feel the same way. The reason is that Florida State has great size in the post. Our team has been able to exploit our size advantage against smaller teams so far but we wouldn't have any size advantage on FSU.

OK, so does anyone know the details on the potential NIT game times 4/1 and 4/3? I've tried to look for them online with no luck.

I'll be in Albany on a work trip; might be able to make the trip to NYC for the 4/3 game if the Gophers make it. But need to figure out logistics...

Anyone have the details?

I understand that SMU doesn't have great size, and that may hurt them in BIG play. I was impressed with their quickness and defensive effort. They could easily pull a few upsets and rack up a few wins against the bottom three.
