NIT Game #3: #1 Gophers vs. #3 Southern Miss & Chip Armelin [ESPN, Tues @ 8:00PM]

I just want to rewind to get this sentence correct:

"It's Austin Hollins who caught fire midway through the 1st quarter and ends up, so far anyway with 26 points. Great 3 point shooting. And what a way to go out, to cap off your career here, a 4 year senior."

Now that is journalism.

Wow Dre. I appreciate you smiling having fun, but you should be pissed after that.

He was clearly frustrated, that was one of those "wow....you gotta be kidding me" type of smiles. Dude's confidence is low, it's not just the ankle. He needs a swag game to get his confidence back up. Too bad there's only two games left in the year though, so we probably won't see him back until next year.

Way to go out at home Austin. What a student athlete.

Southern miss would finish middle of the pack in the Big Ten. Good team.

Great win!!! It was fun watching Austin play his final home game!!! NYC here comes the Golden Gophers!!!!

What does Andre Hollins need to do in the off season to come back and be the senior leader next year?

Get his head screwed on straight. Something is wrong. Not sure if he's not buying in or what.

Forget the ankle excuses.

Agree with everything, especially about the ankle excuses.

Great last game in The Barn for Austin and Mav. Slow start by the Gophers didn't end up hurting again but it would sure be nice to get off to a better start in NYC. Mo and Joey played well inside and took advantage of the mismatch. Southern Miss shot it better than I expected and had a decent team but I don't think they should have been or deserved to be in the NCAA tourney. Andre struggled again tonight but his shot looks real close and I think it might be starting to get more mental for him and if he can see his shot go in early in the game he could get hot. I thought the So.Miss press was handled pretty easily most of the time with the exception being when the Gophers got lackadaisical with the ball.

So I was hoping to avoid the seeing the result and catching the game on Watch ESPN on delay. But already saw the score. Anyone know how long after the game it takes for it to be able to be watched online?

Very good performance tonight from the Gophers. In particular Austin Hollins and Mo Walker were standouts. It was great to hear the crowd give such a great ovation to Austin Hollins in his last game in the Barn. I said it previously after the Iowa game, but I am so happy that Austin was able to have some very good games near the end of his career as he deserved to be remembered fondly. I am sure very few fans (and almost zero casual fans) saw Southern Miss go in to Missouri and put it on the Tigers. The Gophers handled Southern Miss about as easily as Southern Miss handled Missouri. This was a good win for the program and will give us some exposure (admittedly not a ton) playing in MSG next week.

I had to watch the second half of the High Point game on delay on ESPN3/Watch ESPN and it wasn't up until about 2 hours after the game ended. Hopefully it will be up sooner tonight for you.

Could it be that he has too much Rachel on his mind?

So many good things tonight:

  • Started off slow again, BUT clawed back two games in a row. That's a great sign that this team can handle adversity.
  • King continues to develop
  • Austin sent out like a champ for his last home game.
  • Coach P. continues to rack up career wins as a Gopher. 23 wins in his first year aint too bad.
  • Not-so-big Mo continues to develop

Knucklehead post.

Maybe we need Pitino to slam down a chair more often

I don't know if I agree with that.

Selected stats (source) before, but not inclusive of the Wisconsin game vs. stats after the Wisconsin game, up to the St. Mary's game:

All stats/game
Minutes: 32, 30
Pts: 16, 11
2 pt FG att: 5.7, 3.5
3 pt FG att: 5.4, 5.5
FT att: 6, 3.7
O reb: 1.2, 0.2
D reb: 2.8, 2.8
Asst: 2.9, 1.5
Steals: 1.1, 0.5
Blocks: 0.2, 0

Less driving to the lane, means fewer FT attempts. Turnovers were also down, and I'm thinking it was because he was less aggressive with the ball. Fewer fouls 2.7, 2.5, again, I'll attribute that to feeling confident enough to be aggressive. 2 pt% shooting - 45%, 31%. All of those stats after the ankle injury scream not 100% with the ankle.

Don't take this as me thinking that it was all rainbows, and unicorns with glitter shooting out of their asses. I am fully expecting him to take over and be a leader in numerous ways as a senior. I just hope he can add enough the final two games of this year.

Austin is now 6 steals short of tying Newbern's career steals record. He's also 7 assists short of 300 which would make him just one of five Gophers ever with over 1,000 points and 300 assists.

All phases of Andre's game are suffering right now. He's losing guys on defense, turning the ball over, the whole nine yards. Somebody needs to press the reset button on his back.

Pretty much. After the season, if I were Pitino, I'd tell him to take a few weeks off and not even think about basketball. He needs a break in the worst way.

Insightful post. You can see that he's lost all sorts of quickness. Pretty standard that a severe ankle injury can take up to eight weeks or more to heal. Been just a little over two months since the Wisconsin game and, by all accounts, that was a severe sprain. Come back too quickly and it just doesn't have time to heal. That doesn't excuse some of the dumb mistakes he's made, but he's got to be pretty frustrated.

Almost all of his 3 point shots are short. He is not elevating the same. It's the same as if you have dead legs. I think the ankle is still bothering him. I hope he comes back and plays great next year, we will need him.

You forgot...Pitino throws his first chair
